Ponyo swag at Japanese Information and Culture Center

At the recent Lupin III screening at the Japanese Information and Culture Center, the JICC gave out Ponyo hangers and sticker books. Darn, what a missed opportunity! Jim C did give me his copy of the sticker book though which is now safely filed under Miyazaki as I await Ponyo's release.

Miyazaki's one of the world's best cartoonists working now. I will be at the movies to see Ponyo the week it opens.

"Swag" is American English for giveaways, although it originally meant something like pirate treasure.

Did you attend the special advanced screening at the JICC? They were giving away more great stuff!

No, I was out of town. I'm hoping to see the movie on Saturday night. How was it?

I thought it was really good. Saw it last night at the Chinatown theater. While it maintained the consistent themes of environmental destruction harmony and strong female leads from other Miyakaki movies, it didn't seam to have the same "edge" too it as recent fare like Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away. It used the bright surreal style you expect with movies aimed at younger audiences. This doesn't detract from it or dumb it down necessarily, but you can tell it is aimed at the single digit crowd... which is fitting considering that you have to sit through ten minutes of disney trailers at the start.

All in all, not my personal favorite miyazaki, but still a fun movie that's perfect for kids and entertaining for adults.

peace,
