Nick Bertozzi and Steve Sheinkin speaking about their graphic novel Bomb

Shots from tonight at the Cleveland Park Library in Washington, DC. Nick is the guy with the magic marker. Steve wrote the original history book ten years ago that's now been adapted by the two of them into a comic.

Steve Sheinkin & Nick Bertozzi — Bomb Graphic Novel: The Race to Build - And Steal - The World's Most Dangerous Weapon — In Partnership with DCPL at Cleveland Park Library

Monday, January 23, 2023 - 7:00pm

This event is in-person at Cleveland Park Neighborhood Library.

Politics and Prose is delighted to partner with DC Public Library to present Bomb Graphic Novel by Steve Sheinkin and Nick Bertozzi.

Steve Sheinkin’s popular history of the atomic bomb is now a graphic novel with illustrations by Nick Bertozzi. Sheinkin’s extensively researched narrative uses declassified FBI documents to cover Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project, Soviet espionage, Allied efforts to slow Nazi Germany’s development of nuclear weapons, and the birth of the Cold War. The result is a riveting story of how one of humanity’s most ingenious creations led to one of the most inhumane events in history. Detailed full-color illustrations enrich the story and create a compelling book that will interest readers young and old.

Steve Sheinkin is the acclaimed author of fast-paced, cinematic nonfiction histories, including Fallout, Undefeated, Born to Fly, The Port Chicago 50, and Bomb. His accolades include a Newbery Honor, three Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards, a Sibert Medal and Honor, and three National Book Award finalist honors. He lives in Saratoga Springs, New York, with his wife and two children.

Nick Bertozzi has written and drawn many comics over the years, including The Salon, Lewis & Clark, Persimmon Cup, Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey and Becoming Andy Warhol.  He has taught at the School of Visual Arts since 2003. He lives in Queens, NY with his wife and daughters.

Nick Bertozzi and Jason Little at Big Planet Comics

Nick Bertozzi and Jason Little's trip down from New York City to visit Big Planet Comics went well. Local cartoonists turned out including David Hagen, Jim Dougan, Matt Dembicki as well as comics bloggers Comicsgirl and Randy T. Signed copies of their new books should still be available in the store.

Feb 26: Nick Bertozzi and Jason Little at Big Planet Comics

Nick Bertozzi is signing his new book on Lewis and Clark at Big Planet Comics in Bethesda on February 26th from 4-6 pm, and he's accompanied by Jason Little, whose book Motel Art Improvement Service was one of my favorites of 2010.

OT: New webcomic edited by Dean Haspiel

My buddy Dean's joined his old friend Josh Neufeld at Smith magazine to edit a webcomic. The first appears to be by Nick Bertozzi and features, yes, you guessed it - nudity.*

See "NEXT-DOOR NEIGHBOR - True Life Webcomix Anthology, edited by Dean Haspiel, Launches on SMITH Magazine 04.08.08,"

*Bertozzi's depiction of a naked Picasso in Salon has rubbed a bluenose prosecutor the wrong way. He indicted a comic book store owner and this has run up bills for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

June 25: Alison Bechdel in Washington; we're not invited

Because it's an... American Library Association Event, for the GLBTRT Stonewall Book Awards Brunch, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm. Buy the book anyway when she's on her paperback tour - it was one of the best I read last year. This year I'm pushing Bertozzi's The Salon.

April 28 Nick Bertozzi at Big Planet Bethesda UPDATED

Nick Bertozzi signed his two new books Houdini and The Salon, as well as the older Boswash and The Masochist at Big Planet today. A few non-comics readers stopped in and bought The Salon, which I think is one of the best graphic novels of the year. Nick was very pleasant and it was a joy to talk with him. His 6-year old daughter was there, and was helpful in pointing out when your drawing was dry and you could take your book. ;^) Nick talked a little about his books - showing me the page of The Salon that's gotten Gordon Lee in trouble in Georgia (it shows Picasso's penis swinging as he jumps across his studio) and saying that he never wants to draw another bowler hat after Houdini's crowd scenes.

Nick's got an interesting question he asks when he meets you - I won't give it away except to note that answers were INXS / PIL; Clapton or Jason and the Scorchers; and The Who opening for Herman's Hermits. His next project, which should be excellent, is a graphic novel on Lennie Bruce with Harvey Pekar.

This was a good signing - Nick says he'll be at SPX in the fall - if you didn't make this, go to that. And Tom Spurgeon's got a new interview up.
