Come to these SPX-related events around the Washington, DC area: Thursday September 10 Politics & Prose - 7:00PM - Derf signing The Dissidents. Martin Luther King Jr. Library - 7:00PM - Fantom Comics Presents: Taiwan Comics Showcase Cartoonist Talk. People's Book - 6:30PM - Kim Deitch and Noah Van Sciver signing their latest graphic novels. Friday September 11 Library of Congress - Noon - Kim Deitch gives the 12th Annual SPX Lecture at the Library of Congress. Lost Origins Gallery - James Spooner and Nate Powell give the opening presentation and talk for the gallery show Illustrated Influence: 50 Years of Punk Rock and Comics Books. Fantom Comics - 7PM-11PM - The yearly Pre-SPX Party will feature Tinguu interviewed by Ryan Holmberg, Grayson Bear and other SPX exhibitors. Sunday September 13 Wonderland Books - Gemma Correll signing her latest graphic novel, Anxietyland. Tuesday September 15 Spain Arts & Culture - Create Comics With Don Julio and Fran Mariscal. The festival takes place September 12-13, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, across the street from the North Bethesda Metro stop on the Red Line). SPX will have over 500 creators, 280 exhibitor tables, 22 programming panels and 18 hands-on workshops to introduce attendees to the amazing world of independent and small press comics. Vigilantes! Communists!.. and Cartoonists! Derf comes to Politics & Prose at Union Market to talk about his latest book, The Dissidents, from Abrams.  Time: 7:00 PM Place: Politics & Prose - Union Market 1324 4th Street NE Washington, DC 20002 Kim Deitch and Noah Van Sciver at People's Book Kim Deitch (How I Make Comics) and Noah Van Sciver (The Mess) talk about their latest releases from Fantagraphics, who is celebrating their 50th Anniversary. Time: 6:30 PM Place: People's Book 7014 Westmoreland Avenue Suite A Takoma Park, MD Fantom Comics Presents: Taiwan Comics Showcase Cartoonists Talk See Taiwanese artists Monday Recover, a ee mi, Rio, Crystal Kung, and Ding Pao-yen talk about their work, courtesy of Fantom Comics and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office. Time: 7:00 PM Place: MLK Memorial Library 901 G St. NW Washington, DC Friday September 11 SPX Lecture at the Library of Congress: Kim Deitch Legendary Underground Cartoonist and renowned graphic novelist Kim Deitch gives the SPX Lecture at the Library of Congress about his long career in comics. Time: Noon Place: Madison Building, Library of Congress West Dining Room - LM621 101 Independence Ave., Washington DC SPX Special Guest James Spooner and Nate Powell - Opening Presentation and Talk for Illustrated Influence: 50 Years of Punk Rock and Comics Books James Spooner and Nate Powell talk about their backgrounds in both comics and the Punk Movement. Time: 7PM - 11PM Place: Lost Origins 3110 Mt Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20010 Fri 7-9pm  Fantom Comics Pre-SPX Party Fantom's annual pre-SPX party featuring The Cannibals book launch with cartoonist Tinguu interviewed by Ryan Holmberg. Grayson Bear will be doing flash tattoos, and there will be a live sketching event featuring SPX artists to be announced Time: 7PM - 11PM Place: Fantom Comics 2010 P St NW Washington, DC 20036 Sunday September 13 Gemma Correll and Her Latest, Anxietyland, at Wonderland Books Award-winning cartoonist, author, and illustrator Gemma Correll, will discuss her graphic memoir, Anxietyland, from Gallery Books, an honest and surprisingly funny look at her lifelong experience with anxiety and depression. Time: 6:30 PM Place: 7920B Norfolk Ave. Bethesda, Maryland 20814 Tuesday September 15 Create Your Own Comics At Spain Arts & Culture Spain Arts & Culture will have a hands on comic session with SPX Special Guests Don Julio and Fran Mariscal. Come and make some comics with these two great Spanish cartoonists! A free ticket is required, get them here. Time: 6:30 PM Place: Spain Arts & Culture 2801 16th St NW Washington, DC 20009 Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons. SPX is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that brings together more than 500 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, and distributors each year. Graphic novels, mini comics, and alternative comics will all be on display and for sale by their authors and illustrators.
