March 1: Artist Wendy MacNaughton on Dorothea Lange: Seeing People

Artist Wendy MacNaughton on Dorothea Lange: Seeing People

Focus: Exhibitions

Join us for a talk with San Francisco-based artist Wendy MacNaughton about her artistic practice and her appreciation for the work of Dorothea Lange. The conversation is presented in conjunction with Dorothea Lange: Seeing People, an exhibition reframing Lange's work through the lens of portraiture and highlighting her unique ability to discover and reveal the character and resilience of those she photographed. Like Lange, MacNaughton's work is grounded in storytelling and practices of deep looking and listening, creating images of often-overlooked people, places, and things.

Wendy MacNaughton's work is based in the practices of drawing, social work, and storytelling. As a visual columnist for The New York Times and California Sunday Magazine, MacNaughton drew stories everywhere from high school cafeterias to Guantanamo Bay. She has authored and drawn two books, How To Say Goodbye and Meanwhile in San Francisco, and illustrated many others, including the #1 New York Times Bestseller Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat and New York Times Bestseller The Gutsy Girl by Caroline Paul. She is the creator and host of DrawTogether, a participatory drawing show for kids, and the Grown-Ups Table, providing lessons and community for drawing-minded adults.
