DWIGHTMESS is proud to announce its second exhibition of 2024, "Path to The Winter Feast," a sequence of narrative color paintings by Washington, D.C. area-based artist Lenora Yerkes.
"Path to The Winter Feast" is a room-sized experimental comic, featuring a series of fifty-three sequential paintings on panel. Pulling from both indie comics and painting traditions, the haunting narrative envisions a cycle of grief and legacy transmitted in a shimmering, surreal palette. A hand-held comic addendum with a different approach to the painting cycle's central story will also debut with the exhibit.
Lenora Yerkes,, a comics artist as well as a painter, draws on both low and high art traditions in creating unreal landscapes and the figures that live in them. Always narrative and often sequential, her paintings rely on metaphor and archetypes to tell disquieting, moody stories about family and the individual.
Yerkes is a graduate of the California College of Arts and Crafts, where she was a Yozo Hamaguchi Scholar. She has completed artist residencies at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (Washington DC), with Short Run Seattle, and was awarded a 2020 Artist Fellowship Grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Her comic "Rage Queen" was included in the "Drawing Power" anthology edited by Diane Noomin, named by the New York Times one of the best comics of 2019. She is a member of The Residents Collective, founded in 2022.
