Winsor McCay's son returns home from World War I

The Library of Congress has introduced a new search feature for their newspaper collection's images - News Navigator.

Times Artist and His Soldier-Son

Winsor McCay, the famous cartoonist, whose drawings often appear on the editorial page of The Times, welcoming his son, Sergt. Robert Winsor McCay, jr., who returned from France recently with the Twenty-seventh New York Division. Sergeant McCay was awarded the British Military Medal for gallantry in action during the attack by the Twenty-seventh on the Hindenburg line last September.

That one's fairly blurry, so here's a later, better print.

BOOK REVIEW: 'Backing into Forward'

Washington Blade returns while Times fades

The Washington Blade, the gay paper, returned to the stands last week after a several months absence. The paper's name and assets were bought by its former staffers who had been publishing as the DC Agenda. None of the political cartoons or comic strips the Blade had previously published have returned as of the first issue.

Meanwhile, the Washington Times has confirmed that it is for sale. The Times dropped all of its comics months ago.

MTV's Real World cartoonist met Tom Toles

There's a story on the Express website and one at the WTOP site, about Andrew, the would-be editorial cartoonist on MTV's The Real World: DC meeting Tom Toles and drawing a cartoon for the Washington Times.

Alex Hunter of Washington Times wins award

Editor and Publisher is reporting that Alexander Hunter of the Washington Times has won the Scripps Howard Journalism Award which includes $10,000 and a trophy. Hunter does a full broadsheet multipanel editorial cartoon that I find fascinating. While I don't agree with his politics, I'd buy a book of the cartoons - I had the opportunity to see them recently and he's a facile cartoonist who can quote a lot of styles when making his arguement.

Unfortunately, I wonder if he's still in the paper since they dropped their weekend edition?

Washington Times scraps Sunday Comics too, says Daily Cartoonist

Alan Gardner found a notice on the Washington Times website saying they weren't producing a Sunday comics section anymore. For a long time, they actually produced a Saturday color comics section - it only moved to Sunday about five years ago, I think. It's actually easier to find information about that than it is about the current state of their paper.

Washington Times laying off 40% of staff - and 100% of comics?

I'm betting the comics aren't coming back, even though they're not mentioned in this article.

This has not been a good year for comic strips and editorial cartoons in the nation's capital. Perhaps I'll do a year-in-review post like everyone else does in December.

Zadzooks likes new Batman videogame

See "Zadzooks: Batman: Arkham Asylum review," Joseph Szadkowski, Washington Times September 5, 2009 in which he concludes "Batman: Arkham Asylum is the best licensed comic-book video game ever made. Read that and weep, my friends, as it will take a lot for me ever to write that again."

Times reviews League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vol. 3

"Heroes, villans and patriotism," Ron Capshaw, Washington Times Sunday, June 21, 2009 is a positive review of

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, VOL. 3: CENTURY NO. 1: 1910
By Alan Moore, Kevin O'Neill
Top Shelf Productions, $7.95, 80 pages

Washington Times ALSO has a full-page strip on Sunday

I previously mentioned the Art Spiegelman strip that ran this weekend, but the Washington Times ALSO had a full-page strip on Sunday - and apparently has done so for months. Alexander Hunter's Hunter's Big Picture appears to be a monthly full-page editorial cartoon strip that is later animated on the Times' website. The Sunday June 21st page "Who's Your Daddy?" appeared on Father's day and just fell into my hands today - it's a pretty good strip on various aspects of fatherhood. There's 31 of them online so far, and most of them appear to be more political than this one... sigh. Just when you think you've got your blog's subject covered fairly well...

Zadzooks, superheroes and Watchmen at Washington Times

On superheroes is "EDGE: Saving the world ain't what it used to be," Peter Suderman, Washington Times Friday, March 6, 2009.

Zadzooks is still on toys - "Zadzooks: More from toy fair; Legions of action figures on parade," Joseph Szadkowski, Washington Times Thursday, March 5, 2009.

But his blog has a piece by someone who doesn't know anything about Watchmen or comics - "Remembering Watchmen," By Heidi Haynes, Washington Times Zadzooks Blog March 04 2009.

And finally, here's the paper's review - "MOVIES: 'Watchmen' leap into action," Sonny Bunch, Washington Times Thursday, March 5, 2009.

Editorial cartoonist Garner let go at Times?

Alan Gardner is reporting that Bill Garner has been fired as the Washington Times' editorial cartoonist. Rob Tornoe has more details on the story. I haven't seen the Times in a few weeks so I don't know if his work has been appearing or not.
