Local area artist Sophia Glock (Passport, Lettuce Girl, SemiSolid, Over Ripe) will be appearing at our Washington DC store on Saturday, February 28 from 2 to 4pm to sign her brand new graphic novel, Before We Wake.
Sophia was kind enough to do a limited edition, signed and numbered bookplate for us too!

Max was the first awardee of the compound's annual Swekt & Drang Cartoonist Residency in 2023  so it's a real homecoming event - We're *so* looking forward to seeing what Max has been up to, and getting our copy of his work signed ! This event is FREE and open to the public.

Hello Everyone! The SPX 2026 Lottery will soon be upon us! Stay tuned to your Inbox (or possibly your Spam folder) as we are a week away from the lottery. The email notice and social media posts will be sent out on March 2. Here are the key dates (please excuse us if we are a few days late here and there): Monday March 2: The lottery will open at Midnight Eastern Time. Sunday March 15 - Lottery closes at 11:59PM Eastern Time. Early April - Lottery participants contacted. Mid April - Table payment and hotel room block information sent to all table holders. May - Payments due for all tables. Early June - Table assignments sent out, begin to collect badge info and Debuts. Here are the details: We will be checking to make sure you publish single panel cartoon and comics (minicomix/comics, graphic novels, anthologies, etc., etc.), so if you're exclusively an illustrator, novelist, cosplayer or anime figure retailer (we get them) you will not be eligible for tables. We will not be choosing the randomized lottery winners until after all applications have been received; this means there is no benefit to applying early or late (except maybe peace of mind). You can only apply for the lottery once, and multiple entries will result in you being removed from the lottery pool (unless you email us and tell us you accidentally clicked twice or something, we do have a heart!). It was a bit of a hike, but  the area was beautiful and reminiscent of
the farms of my youth. Fenced pastures and pretty woods, but the gallery
itself was a treat even before I climbed to the top weefloor to see the
show. All in all worth the trip on a nice day.

When I first got to DC in 1983, there were lots of comics in newspapers. Including alternative ones such as the City Paper and the Blade.

The Washington City Paper is digitized and online for free. It used to run multiple alternative strips.
