Fantom Comics PR: A Message From The Comics Journeyman

I'm writing to invite each of you to connect with me via one of the social media options that I use to communicate with the world at large about the comic books that I love.

Dear Fan Of Fantom,

Who IS "The Comics Journeyman"?

For starters, I am the host of SubcultureForTheCultured.com, a companion site to Fantom Comics. "SFTC" is dedicated to bringing you original thoughts on our favorite comic books and graphic novels that tend to be slightly "off the beaten path". And by "off the beaten path", I mean (mostly) non-superhero properties.

As a Fantom Comics Subscriber, you are already connected to Fantom via the comiXology platform (and if not, you can easily sign up - just follow the link to the instructions for our COMIC BOOK RESERVATION SERVICE, powered by comiXology). Over the coming days, I will be reaching out to all of Fantom's subscribers with a "comiXology friend request". This will allow you to view my picks from each month's Previews catalog right on the comiXology website, and for me to view your picks as well. It's really an open invitation to read what I'm reading. Recognizing that not everyone has the same tastes, I've listed below the books that I subscribe to regularly, along with an indication of whether I read the comic or the trade paperback.

My goal is to use comiXology's features to their fullest to create an online community of comic book readers who share an enthusiasm for the stories and artwork in the pages of our favorite comics, and who can share recommendations for new comic book journeys to pursue.

Another way that you can connect with me is to follow me on Twitter www.twitter.com/cmxjourneyman

I will use Twitter to post updates and share interesting articles from time to time.

Think of me as the Pied Piper of (mostly) non-superhero comics, inviting you to follow me on my journey through the best that comic books have to offer.

I look forward to getting to know you and your tastes in comic books!

Keep reading comics, may the journey never end.

Magic Bullet 2 press release

Washington DC comics and drinking group publishes second issue of MAGIC BULLET comics newspaper to much fanfare.

Prepare yourself for the majesty that is MAGIC BULLET #2. The DC Conspiracy, a local group of comics creators and fans, have published the second issue of their groundbreaking and absolutely free comics newspaper and plan to bring it to you.

Featuring a cover by Mike O'Brien and including comics from local cartoonists such as Carolyn Belefski, Joe Carabeo, Andrew Cohen, Matt Dembicki, Evan Keeling, RM Rhodes, (and non-local ringers like Jeff McComsey and Jim Rugg), MAGIC BULLET #2 is designed to brighten your day while blowing your mind. Each comic contained within the pages of MAGIC BULLET #2 was created with love and with the greatest of care.

Rafer Roberts, editor of MAGIC BULLET (as well as a contributor) talked about this second issue. "Oh man," he says. "This paper is so completely awesome. It's the best thing ever and people are gonna want to get their hands on a copy. I mean, we have comics from Kevin Czapiewski, Jake Warrenfeltz, Jeff McClelland, Mal Jones, and Steve Becker. We even got Stephen Loya, and he doesn't even draw comics!"

MAGIC BULLET #2 has a wide distribution plan, as described by Roberts. "We've picked a day, probably March 28th, and a bunch of us are going to be handing these out at metro stations during the morning commute. Holy cow, can you image what it's going to be like starting your day reading comics from the likes of Marc Bryant, Scott White, Lonny Chant, or Michael Brace? Add in comics by Eric Gordon, Troy Jeffrey-Allen, JT Wilkins and me, and you've got the makings of the best commute of your life."

For those not fortunate enough to be handed a paper, all hope is not lost. MAGIC BULLET #2 will be available throughout the district at finer comic shops and clubs, as well as at local comic shows such as SPX. An ever evolving list of places interested readers can find the paper can be found at http://www.dcconspiracy.com

*********

About MAGIC BULLET:

In 2010 the DC DC Conspiracy would put out a newspaper filled with our comics. A newspaper? Filled with comics? In an era where comics are presented smaller and on handheld digital devices, presenting large format comics in a dying medium seemed like such an outdated model that we just had to go for it. With the aesthetic that each artist would take advantage of the larger format, MAGIC BULLET was born.

About DC Conspiracy:

Founded in January 2005, the DC Conspiracy has expanded to over 50 members who embody the best of creative comics talent in the DC area. The work we write, draw, edit, and distribute runs the gamut -- from witty and literary works to comics which incorporate action, the mystical, and just plain nonsense. Individually we create, but collectively we're working to expand comics readership and fraternity through anthologies, minis, and webcomics, among other things.

I think not. The Team Cul de Sac blog is now live and has some of the art that cartoonists have been submitting, including local stalwarts SL Gallant and David Hagen, Alaskan cartoonist Peter Dunlap-Shohls and the great Lynn Johnston.

March 8: Arlington's Mardi Gras parade

Richard Thompson's done the poster again.

I'll be there. He might. I'll sign his name if you'd like.

UPDATE - he wasn't there. I was. Nobody asked me to sign his name. However, I did find out that Bono Mitchell of Bonotom Studio, who always commissions these drawings from Richard, colored this one, in spite of being nervous about it. I think she did a great job - I didn't realize it wasn't his coloring.

American Political Cartoons, 1754-2010 book

Until I met them today, I didn't realize Stephen Hess & Sandy Northrup, the authors of American Political Cartoons, 1754-2010, were both in the DC area. Sandy tells me that they'll be making at least three appearances, "speaking at the National Archives, April 13th, 7PM; Library of Congress, April 27th, 12PM and; Newseum, May 15th, 2:30PM. It should be a lively discussion accompanied with a power point presentation." I plan to attend at least one and will buy the book, which is an update of the first edition (that I already have).

Comics return to the City Paper

The City Paper's redesigned itself and has this to say about comic strips -

  • Comics Page. Like many of our readers, we were sorry to see the paper's comics go a few years ago. Starting next week, they'll be back, on a single dedicated page that will feature Derf's excellent The City, Shawn Belschwender's Clown Time, David Malki's Wondermark, and Michael Kupperman's Up All Night. You'll still find Dirt Farm in its usual place.

  • - and we note that Ben Claassen is the cartoonist of Dirt Farm.

A little more on the Herblock Award, from two of the judges

Matt Wuerker, 2010's winner of the Herblock award, and Signe Wilkinson are the editorial cartoonists who were two of the three judges for the 2011 award. They've shared their thinking behind the selection of Tom Toles as the winner with us.

Judging the Herblock award this year was really, really hard.  There was too much good work in way too many inventive forms.  It's good news for our readers ... but hard for judges. Different judges would have ended up with a different decision.

In the spirit of transparency, we'd like to lift the veil a little on the thinking that went into our judging this year. Think of this as a little WikiLeak of what happened on the path to awarding the 2011 Herblock Prize.

Before the judging, it was agreed that this year the finalist would also be recognized.  We knew the job was to come up with two top cartoonists.

We had a great, broad sampling of political cartooning today: lots of traditional single-panel cartoons, plenty of stellar "altie" work, a number of great ventures into cartoon journalism and, of course, the animation submissions. We even had cartoons rendered with actual oil from the BP spill.

In the apples and oranges comparisons that are such a big part of the process, it was hard to measure the simple punchy genius of single panels by the likes of Pett and Britt against long-form docucomics that went beyond the headlines, like those submitted by Ohman, Wasserman and Varvel, or for that matter animated reporter's sketchbooks such as the engaging submission from Rex Babin.

Mike Thompson's finger on the pulse of Detroit crime and Bill Day's attention to child abuse were both powerful uses of our medium. For taking us where cartooning had not gone before, Ted Rall's enterprising trip to Afghanistan was particularly noteworthy.  Pat Bagley's wonderful loose humor and engagement with his readers made him a contender. The "Alties," led by Bors and Sorensen, all made it to the semifinal pile, as did Ramirez, whose graphic punch and strong, clearly expressed political opinions kept him in the running right up to the end.

We all agreed that, to the best of our abilities, we'd not judge according to our political bent but solely on the quality and consistency of the cartooning found in the portfolios we were looking at.

Though Matt Davies had what we all agreed was the single best cartoon of the year, "WikiLeaks" (by the way, a non-animated black-and-white single panel),  the quality and creativity of the Toles and Telnaes portfolios put them at the very top.  Choosing between the two was excruciating and took a while, but in the end we felt the overall consistency of Toles's complete portfolio made him the winner, with Telnaes No. 2 by a hair ... or a .3 Micron line.

Buy Dark Horse Presents #1 for Finder, but you've got a choice of 3 covers.

DC's Carla Speed McNeil is in the comic, but if you buy Dark Horse Presents #1 for Finder, you've got a choice of 3 covers.

From the Dark Horse blog: http://www.darkhorse.com/Blog/273/paul-pope-covers-dark-horse-presents-1-special-ult

Paul Pope covers Dark Horse Presents #1 with special ultra-rare variant cover!

As excitement about the relaunch of the legendary anthology comic Dark Horse Presents builds, Dark Horse president and publisher Mike Richardson—who's also personally editing DHP's anticipated return—is adding another thrilling creator to the premiere issue's roster. In addition to the main cover by Paul Chadwick and Frank Miller's variant cover, an ultra-rare variant by Paul Pope (cover artist for The Escapists, the original and historic run of Dark Horse Presents, Marvel's Strange Tales, DC's Wednesday Comics) will also adorn Dark Horse Presents #1.

Retailers who buy twenty copies of DHP #1 featuring the Chadwick cover, the Miller cover, or a combination of both will receive a copy of DHP #1 featuring the ultra-rare variant cover (available only while supplies last), signed by one of the book's iconic creators. For each additional twenty copies ordered, another ultra-rare variant edition will be received, and each will feature a new signature.

Fans and comic collectors, ask your local retailer about how to get a copy of this exclusive variant-cover issue!

The thrilling lead-in to DHP's relaunch continues today on the Dark Horse blog, when we'll reveal the two covers to issue #2. Be there!

    latebreaking Harvey Pekar: Conversations review

I was just sent a review of a book I edited a couple of years ago -

    Harvey Pekar: Conversations

    Jordana Hall
    Shofar (Winter 2011; 29:2), p. 190-192

    - in which Ms. Hall says in conclusion, "To those unfamiliar with American Splendor, Conversations is an excellent introduction to the comics and their creator. To fans of Pekar's work, the book provides insight into the author, his personal tastes, and his creative process. What is more, the conversations with his artist collaborators offer an inside look at the entire production process. Taken together the twenty-one interviews are informative and entertaining, with humorous outbursts from Joyce Brabner, who also gets her say in the later pieces. Harvey Pekar: Conversations is an important book for any scholar or enthusiast of comics."

    Ahhh. Thank you Ms. Hall.
