Herb Trimpe, ace Marvel artist, has passed away

I grew up on Herb Trimpe's art, especially on the Hulk and Godzilla. I've met him a few times at cons and you can see my photos here.

Local cartoonist Shannon Gallant memorialized Herb on his blog.

Here's a longer obituary.

Baltimore Comic-Con's new day 1 - Friday

Don Rosa did a sketch for Team Cul de Sac fundraising.
I was able to take the day off and head up to Baltimore Comic-Con with editorial cartoonist Steve Artley riding shotgun.

The space is bigger than last years, and in the building closer to Camden Yards. It throws one off a bit as it's really downstairs, ticket sales are upstairs, and the arrangement isn't the same. You'll find big name cartoonists on both edges with dealers in the middle and artists alley flanking to the right, furthest from the entrance.

The show on Friday was slow, but pleasant as one could walk right up to cartoonists. I ran into organizer Marc Nathan who told me they pre-sold 13x as many tickets for Saturday as they did for today. So expect a crowd tomorrow.

As usual, I had a great time. This is a good show - still small enough to enjoy, but with plenty of dealers and guests. I'm worn out from day 1.

Shannon Gallant was already looking to a higher power by Friday evening.

Fantom Comics - a few pictures from the opening

The new store is a nice well-lighted place on P St, NW, at 21st St, next to Second Story Books and above Subway. They may be  a BIT overstocked on Saga and The Walking Dead this week. Cartoonists Carolyn Belefski, Joe Carabeo, Matt Dembicki, Shannon Gallant and TR Logan attended the opening, signing copies of the new Magic Bullet #9 free anthology from the DC Conspiracy. More pictures are here.

Awesome Con day 1 is a success

101_5541 District Comics panelist
District Comics panelists - Art Haupt, Rafer Roberts, Mike Cowgill, Andrew Cohen, Jacob Warrenfeltz, Mike Rhode, Carolyn Belefski and Troy-Jeffrey Allen.

The Con sold out of tickets by about 3 pm on Saturday. They had a good mix of people, and it was bustling. Lots of cartoonists tell me they did well. Nick Galifianakis sold out of his book. Dan Nokes made his table money back in an hour. John Gallagher and Steve Conley were always busy. Bill McKay's commission list went into tomorrow. Shannon Gallant seemed to stay busy with commissions too. Troy-Jeffrey Allen and Jay Payne launched Bamn #4. Carolyn Belefski was interviewed by Comic Riffs today too.

The District Comics panel had about 40 people in it, despite being opposite the costume judging contest. I think this has the potential to be similar to Baltimore CC in a few years.

BTW, New Jerseyan Jeff Shultz is selling his Archie pages for $20 each. I bought a nice volleyball page.

Here's some pictures.
