French In Motion

The monthly documentary and conversation series created by French in Motion in partnership with NYU's John Brademas Center returns with a special screening of Democracy Under Siege, followed by a discussion moderated by NPR journalist Nick Spicer.

As 2025 unfolds, the American democratic ideal continues to face profound stress tests. In Democracy Under Siege, Oscar-nominated director Laura Nix takes a rigorous and timely look at the structural pressures, political dynamics, and institutional fragilities shaping the current moment. The film examines the assumptions underlying democratic stability and asks what happens when long-standing norms are challenged from within. Among those featured is Pulitzer-winning cartoonist Ann Telnaes, former editorial cartoonist for The Washington Post, whose recent resignation over the censorship of one of her submissions sparked national debate about press independence, ownership influence, and the boundaries of editorial freedom.

With precision and urgency, Nix's film invites audiences to confront difficult questions about public trust, accountability, and the resilience of democratic institutions.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Laura Nix and protagonist Ann Telnaes, former editorial cartoonist for The Washington Post.

Open to all | Free for students and French in Motion members
Please note: registration closes 24 hours before the event.

A bientôt,

Feb 28: Sophia Glock booksigning at Big Planet Comics DC

Sophia Glock Signing

Local area artist Sophia Glock (Passport, Lettuce Girl, SemiSolid, Over Ripe) will be appearing at our Washington DC store on Saturday, February 28 from 2 to 4pm to sign her brand new graphic novel, Before We Wake.
Sophia was kind enough to do a limited edition, signed and numbered bookplate for us too!

"Haunted by a recurring dream, Alicia borrows a book about lucid dreaming, and soon learns to take control of her sleeping life. She welcomes the arrival of her best friend's boyfriend in her dreamworld, and soon sparks start to fly. But then he admits, when they are both awake, that he remembers everything that happened while they were asleep. Suddenly, Alicia's dream life has become as complicated as her waking one.

In this electrifying graphic novel, Glock whisks readers on a head‑spinning romantic dream odyssey, exploring the ways in which we hold ourselves back—and what it will take to let our wildest dreams come true."

Copies of Before We Wake will be available at the signing for purchase in hardcover ($25.99) and softcover ($18.99) including one of the bookplates (while supplies last).
