Alexis Frederick-Frost's new book

Team Unihorn and Woolly #1: Attack of the Krill

By Alexis Frederick-Frost

On Sale: April 16, 2024

Meet the coolest new superhero team on Burlap Beach in the first in a series of graphic novels for young readers.

Raina the rhino, Nigel the narwhal, Shu the horseshoe crab, and Woolly the mammoth have more in common than the fact that they all have horns. (WARNING: Never try to tell Shu that hers is really more of a tail!) They were also all exposed to a Super Blood Full Moon Eclipse that gave them each strange powers. Now Shu can fly, Raina is lightning quick, Nigel has supersonic sonar, and Woolly, well, he's extra fluffy.

Unfortunately, our heroes aren't the only ones who were gifted by the eclipse. Now they'll need to stave off a giant krill monster who was also caught up in the event. If they can't stop him, it might just mean the end of Burlap Beach, Team Unihorn (and Woolly), and even--gasp!--summer's tastiest treat, ice cream!

The prison battle that led to a gang war

The prison battle that led to a gang war

By and
Washington Post April 17, 2024
https://wapo.st/3wosqgg (free to read) or

It was the deadliest prison riot in Ecuador's history. On a single day in September 2021, at least 120 people were killed in clashes between rival gangs at the Guayaquil penitentiary. The bloodletting was an early sign of the growing power of the country's gangs and a warning about the kind of extreme violence they could unleash. One inmate, Phoenix, saw the prison battle unfold. Phoenix asked to be identified only by his nickname because of safety concerns.

This comic is based on interviews with Phoenix and references illustrations drawn by him, along with extensive reporting on Ecuador's prison system and gang violence. Scenes and dialogue reflect his recollections as well as The Washington Post's reporting on the 2021 prison riot in the Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil.

The comic is part of a series of stories about the rising power of organized criminal groups in Latin America, the United States' biggest trading partner. The first piece reconstructs the day, earlier this year, when Ecuador's gangs pushed the country into chaos and led a young president to declare a state of "internal armed conflict."

Latin America is producing more than twice as much cocaine as it did a decade ago. Nearly every one of its mainland nations has become a major producer or mover of the drug, feeding booming markets in the United States, Europe and South America.

Organized-crime groups have moved well beyond narcotics. They've created sprawling illicit industries in extortion, migrant smuggling and gold mining. Their power has become so great that they form a new kind of insurgency, infiltrating government operations.

An "unknown" Clifford Berryman self-portrait

This surfaced recently in the National Geographic archives before being sent out for deep storage. Berryman apparently drew it for the editor Gilbert H. Grovesnor as an RSVP to a luncheon invitation because it's on a piece of his stationary.

Berryman is hurrying to see artist / explorer Alexander Iacolevff who had worked on a story about Vietnam for them in 1935. Presumably he was back in the States by the beginning of the year, because Berryman's dated his cartoon to March 15, 1935 for a lunch on the 18th. Here's one of the artworks Iacolevff did at the time. Here's a painting that National Geographic used to own before they auctioned off a good bit of their patrimony in 2012, including more by him, and paintings (plural for both) by NC Wyeth, and dinosaur artist Charles Knight, and a lot of famous photographs. Browse the whole list here. They made $3,776,587 before selling themselves to Fox a few years later.

Announcing the new John Locher Memorial Fellowship winner Alexandra Bowman

Announcing the new John Locher Memorial Fellowship

by JP Trostle

For 35 years, the AAEC's John Locher Memorial Award spotlighted college-age and early-career cartoonists across North America. Named after the late son of Dick and Mary Locher, the AAEC created the award to help discover young cartoonists and encourage interest in editorial cartooning among students — and it worked.

Over a dozen winners of the annual contest went on to staff jobs at daily newspapers, and three eventually won the Pulitzer Prize. As the landscape for political cartooning shifted, the award expanded in 2015 to recognize a variety of new approaches to the form, from animated political cartoons to graphic journalism, and comics essays on history and current events.

In recent years, the Locher team continued to look for ways to evolve to best support budding cartoonists, including options other than a contest format. After a gap year, and discussions among the Locher Advisory Committee and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists is happy to announce the first John Locher Memorial Fellowship.

This year's recipient is Alexandra Bowman.

Bowman is a political cartoonist, journalist, and satirist based in Washington, DC. She served as the editorial cartoonist for the political action committee The Lincoln Project during the 2020 election, and later drew for the John Kerry and John Kasich-founded environmental organization World War Zero. Her cartoons been published by BBC News, the National Wildlife Federation, and Penguin Random House UK. She also works as a costume designer and arts and culture writer.

More of Alex's work can be found here: https://www.alexandrabowmanart.com/

Kevin Necessary, the new Locher Fellowship manger, said, "The Fellowship shares much of the same framework as the Award — an all-expenses-paid trip to a cartoonist convention, a cash prize, and the support and mentoring from fellow cartoonists — but removes the contest element and changes the destination to the annual Cartoon Crossroads Columbus Festival."

The Locher Fellow will be a guest of the CXC Festival, held every fall in September or October, and will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC. They will also have the opportunity to meet with AAEC cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.

JP Trostle, the Minister of Information for the AAEC, noted, "Much of the language of the structure of the new Fellowship came from Paul Tarr, a current AAEC Director and the second winner of the Locher Award back in 1988, which gave the process a feeling of coming full circle."

Alexandra Bowman will be at the CXC Festival in Columbus, Ohio, September 26-29. Complete details about the new Fellowship can be found at https://locheraward.org/ For questions, contact Kevin Necessary at kev.necessary@gmail.com.
