Flugennock's Latest'n'Greatest: "It Is What It Is"

From DC's anarchist cartoonist Mike Flugennock -

"It Is What It Is"
http://sinkers.org/stage/?p=3047

This past week, in an interview on Axios, Trump had this to say about the 150,000+ deaths from coronavirus this year: "It is what it is". You actually have to take your hat off to something like that, something so sublimely, elegantly, ferociously tone-deaf — something even worse, in fact, than Biden's immortal "you ain't Black", and that's saying something.

Virtual National Book Festival comics art guests

There appear to be only 3 cartoonists, if you include Mo Willems who's been more of a children's author.

Jerry Craft
Mo Willems
Gene Luen Yang

Let me know if you spot someone I missed. Fortunately, we don't have to go wait in lines downtown for this big lineup. (That's sarcasm, although all 3 of the guests they do have are well-worth reading and listening to).

The #1 New York Times bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater (The Raven Cycle series) and artist Morgan Beem unearth the primal power of memory and how it twists the bond between two brothers.

Twins Alec and Walker Holland have a reputation around town. One is quiet and the other is the life of any party, but they are inseparable. For their last summer before college, the two leave the city to live with their rural cousins, where they find that the swamp holds far darker depths than they could have imagined.

While Walker carves their names into the new social scene, Alec recedes into a summer school laboratory, because he brought something from home on their trip—it's an experiment that will soon consume him. This season, both brothers must confront truths, ancient and familial, and as their lives diverge, tensions increase and dormant memories claw to the surface.

Swamp Thing: Twin Branches is a story of shadows, both literal and imagined—and those that take form and haunt us.

Aug 23: Megan Margulies in Conversation With Jacque Nodell

My Captain America
Sunday, August 23 @ 2pm (PT)

Megan Margulies's My Captain America (Pegasus) is a finely wrought coming-of-age memoir about the author's relationship with her beloved grandfather, Joe Simon, cartoonist and cocreator of Captain America. Evoking New York City both in the 1980s and '90s and during the Golden Age of comics in the 1930s and '40s, My Captain America flashes back from Margulies's story to chart the life and career of Rochester native Joe Simon, from his early days retouching publicity photos and doing spot art for magazines, to his partnership with Jack Kirby at Timely Comics (the forerunner of Marvel Comics), which resulted in the creation of beloved characters like Captain America, the Boy Commandos, and Fighting American. My Captain America offers a tender and sharply observed account of Margulies's life with Daddy Joe — and an intimate portrait of the creative genius who gave us one of the most enduring superheroes of all time. Margulies will be joined in conversation by Jacque Nodell, author of How to Go Steady, curator of the blog Sequential Crush, and granddaughter of Martin Nodell, creator of the original Green Lantern.

Aug 20: Lisa Hanawalt in Conversation With Emily Heller

I Want You
Thursday, August 20 @ 5pm (PT)

Before the critically acclaimed animated shows (Tuca and Bertie and BoJack Horseman), the bestselling graphic novel, Coyote Doggirl, and the humor collections, Hot Dog Taste Test and My Dirty Dumb Eyes, cartoonist Lisa Hanawalt was a comic book industry sensation with her Ignatz Award-winning minicomic series, I Want You. Hanawalt's outlandish humor and ingenious formalism are evident in the comics collected in I Want You (Drawn & Quarterly). Her love of anthropomorphism and scatology are on full display, all lovingly and grotesquely drawn by Hanawalt in obsessive, unnerving detail. Whether she's discussing the daily commute or masturbation, she packs each comic in I Want You with punchy cultural observations and sharp-witted reflections on typically taboo subjects. A master humorist, Hanawalt strikes the perfect balance between drawing the gorgeous and the repugnant, the fantastical and the lifelike, the bizarre and the hilarious — creating a deeply human experience that everyone can relate to. Hanawalt will be joined in conversation by comedian and writer Emily Heller.
