PR: SPX 2026 Table Lottery Is Now Open!!

SPX 2026 Table Lottery Is Now Open!!

Hello Everyone!

The SPX 2025 Table Lottery is now open!

Go to the this page on the web site and register for the lottery today.

Here are the key dates for the Lottery:

  • Monday, March 2 - The lottery will open at Midnight Eastern Time.
  • Sunday March 15 - Lottery closes at 11:59PM Eastern Time.

Here is some key information about the lottery:

  • We will be checking to make sure you publish comics (minicomix/comics, graphic novels, anthologies, etc., etc.), so if you're exclusively an illustrator, novelist, cosplayer or anime figure retailer you will not be eligible for tables.

  • We will not be picking the randomized lottery winners until after all applications have been received; this means there is no benefit to applying early or late (except maybe peace of mind).

  • You can only apply for the lottery once, and multiple entries will result in you being removed from the lottery pool (unless you email us and tell us you accidentally clicked twice or something, we do have a heart!).

  • We will determine what masking requirements there will be at the show this Summer.

If you have any questions email us at exhibitor-inquiries@smallpressexpo.com.

Best of luck to everyone!

March 31: Halsey Berryman at Peoples Book in Takoma Park

From their newsletter:

Finally, friend of the store Halsey Berryman will be at the shop on Tuesday, March 31 at 6:30 PM to talk about Pests & Other Friends. You might know Halsey from her very funny and talented cartooning career, and her debut book is just as delightful. Pests and so-called nuisance animals get a bad rap…but each and every one of them serves a purpose in their ecosystem. Learn how helpful, intelligent, and fascinating these creatures can be in this lushly illustrated exploration of North American wildlife.

Halsey Berryman for Pests & Other Friends

March 31 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Free

Pests and so-called nuisance animals get a bad rap…

…but each and every one of them serves a purpose in their ecosystem. Learn how helpful, intelligent, and fascinating these creatures can be in this lushly illustrated exploration of North American wildlife.

Armadillos dig holes in backyards, but did you know that  they also consume many troublesome species like fire ants, yellowjackets, and cockroaches? Or that prairie dog burrows provide other animals with much needed shelter? From the deserts of the Southwest to the city streets of the East Coast, Pests & Other Friends celebrates the unique ways in which these underappreciated animals benefit their individual environments.

Halsey Berryman's beautifully detailed, whimsical  artwork captures the distinctive traits of these regularly slandered critters, ensuring you'll never look at  pigeons, skunks, or alligators the same way again.

Halsey Berryman (she/her) is an illustrator and lettering artist from Washington, DC, who grew up between DC, Harvard, Massachusetts, and Taos, New Mexico. Halsey received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2014 from the Corcoran College of Art + Design, where she studied painting and drawing. Some of her clients include the Washington Post, AOC for Congress, Sleater-Kinney, Austin City Limits Music Festival, PBS, Bird Collective, and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. Halsey's work explores the interaction between the human and natural world, and what these often humorous exchanges and commonalities can teach us during the Anthropocene. Drawn to the most maligned creatures, Halsey's work is often centered around the underdogs of the animal world, underscoring social and political parallels with animal behavior and cultural signifiers through visual satire. As a dedicated realist, she is inspired by vintage nature illustrations, but as a fan of color, her north star is risograph printing. Halsey lives in Takoma Park, Maryland with her wife, two dogs, three cats, and a collection of plants.

About Mike Rhode

I'm a co-editor with Bill Watterson of the Art of Richard Thompson book. With that out of the way, I'm interested in all aspects of comic art. I'm coauthor of the annual Comics Research Bibliography which is posting daily here and on Facebook. I'm the Exhibits and Media Reviews editor, and assistant editor, for the International Journal of Comic Art, and I've written for Hogan's Alley and the Comics Journal. (One of my first articles for IJOCA is reprinted here on ComicsDC). A good recent article is in White House History on the cartoon-decorated Hay-Adams Hotel bar, Off the Record. I've been a judge for the RFK Journalism Awards editorial cartoon division from 2009-2022 and in 2015, 2016 & 2020, I was a Herblock Award judge. I've edited Harvey Pekar: Conversations, a book of interviews for the University Press of Mississippi which is available now. In 2012, I edited and published Biographical Sketches of Cartoonists & Illustrators in the Swann Collection of the Library of Congress by LOC’s curator Sara Duke. In 2014, I co-edited The Art of Richard Thompson and The Incomplete Art of "Why Things Are" by Richard Thompson in 2017. In 2022, I edited and published Compleating Cul de Sac, 2nd edition focused on Richard Thompson's comic strip. In 2008 for my ComicsDC blog, I was chosen Best (Comics) Art Blogger by the Washington City Paper and from 2010-16, I wrote on comics for the Washington City Paper. You can see most of my writings at my Academia.edu page. The Library of Congress and Michigan State University's Library's Comic Art Collection both have "Michael Rhode collections" of cartooning items I've donated, and MSU has individually cataloged hundreds of them. From 2015-2019, 2022-, I'm an associate member of the National Cartoonists Society. I've written two short comics pieces, illustrated by Kevin Rechin, for Matt Dembicki's non-fiction comics anthologies District Comics and Redistricted.

Reader maps, or Where in the world is ComicsDC?

Our First Principle

"I try to be interested in very nearly everything. I always think boredom is to some extent the fault of the bored." - Julian Kestrel, the hero in Kate Ross's novel Cut to the Quick.

Our Second Principle

"It takes less time to do a thing right than to explain why you did it wrong" - Longfellow, quoted on an Elliot's Amazing bottlecap.

What's it all mean in the end?

"Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp,
Or what's a heaven for?"

Robert Browning in Andrea del Sarto
