In this cinematographic masterpiece, animator and director Satoshi Kon intricately intertwines the concept of truth and fiction that stretches the limits of animated film. Kon's credits include Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika, both shown at the JICC. Millennium Actress received the Grand Prize in the Japan Agency of Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival.

Genya Tachibana, a documentary filmmaker, travels to the isolated mountain lodge to interview the legendary actress Chiyoko Fujiwara. Now a 70 year old woman living in seclusion, Chiyoko was once a major movie star who dominated the Japanese screens. Her movies and her roles encompassed a millennium, from the Warring States Period of the 15th and 16th centuries to the science-fiction space age - but a single desire served as an inspiration for each role and in each era - to see her first love again. As she recounts the magnificent story of her life, Chiyoko transcends the lines between the past and the present, and reality and fantasy.

In Japanese with English subtitles. Rated PG. 87 mins. 2001. Directed by Satoshi Kon.
