Malaka Gharib, among others on, SDCC video

History Goes Graphic | Comic-Con@Home 2020

Jul 24, 2020

Authors behind graphic adaptations of cultural pasttimes, historical figures, social justice movements, and autobiographies discuss their process. How does one adapt "real life" into a comic format? How is it different from fiction? In what way must art stick to (or differ from) "authenticity"? Featuring Fred Van Lente (The Comic Book Story of Basketball), Tom Scioli (Jack Kirby), David F. Walker (The Life of Frederick Douglass), Mikki Kendall (Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists), and Malaka Gharib (I Was Their American Dream), moderated by Ten Speed Press associate editorial director Kaitlin Ketchum.

There's no shortage of fodder for political and social satire these days, yet some say political cartooning is a dying art! Sikoryak (Constitution Illustrated) as they discuss their approaches to making relevant, critical comics in the age of... whatever it is that's going on right now! Remembering the legacy of the congressman and co-author of the MARCH trilogy.

July 25: P&P Live!: Adrian Tomine

P&P Live!: Adrian Tomine – The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist - in conversation with Jason Zinoman

This event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series.

Adrian Tomine was born in 1974 in Sacramento, California. He began self-publishing his comic book series Optic Nerve when he was sixteen, and in 1994 he received an offer to publish from Drawn & Quarterly. His comics have been anthologized in publications such as McSweeney's, Best American Comics, and Best American Nonrequired Reading, and his graphic novel Shortcomings was a New York Times Notable Book of the year. Since 1999, Tomine has been a regular contributor to the New Yorker. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughters. Tomine will be joined in conversation with author Jason Zinoman.

The first 50 orders placed for The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist through Politics and Prose will receive signed bookplates as well as a signed print!

Instead of a set ticket price, we ask that you contribute what you can to support Politics and Prose Bookstore and our virtual event series. We know that everyone has been affected in these trying times, and we will continue to make our programming accessible to all. That said, a suggested contribution of $5, $10, whatever you can afford, will go a long way to keep our programming—and our bookstore—afloat as we are forced to adapt to new ways of business.

The other way you can support us is always by purchasing a book from our website.

We are so grateful to be surrounded by such a loyal and engaged community and we thank you for your support, now and always.

Click here to join the Live! Event.

"Freedom Isn't Free"

Getting up to date in our Thinning Out The Stupid Gene Department: Florida, gung-ho for reopening, beaches crowded as hell, has set a new one-day record for new COVID19 cases; even as one state after another begins mandating mask use, the governor of Georgia has stuck a blow for freedom by barring municipalities from mandating masks and, elsewhere in the Covidiot Universe, the co-founder of ReOpen Maryland — one of many groups standing up for our Constitutional right to manicures and ice cream — tested positive for COVID19 just a couple of weeks ago.

But as it's often said — Freedom Isn't Free.
