Steve Artley's cartoons added to Alexandria Times

Countering the general trend towards firing political cartoonists, the Alexandria (VA) Times has hired Alexandria cartoonist Steve Artley to provide local cartoons twice a week. See "Toons for the Times," Alexandria Times April 19 2009. Excellent news - we haven't had anyone in neighboring Arlington since the Sun-Gazette let Mikula go.

Original Christmas ornaments by cartoonists

Barbara Dale had a few people over to her house after a tour at Geppi's Entertainment Museum. After pizza, she coaxed people into decorating ornaments. Here's the one-of-a-kind ornaments now on my tree with a Thomas Nast's Santa Claus, a Cliffored Berryman's teddy bear (from the Smithsonian) and a couple of Snoopy's (from Hallmark's Peanuts line).

Artley wins 2 Virginia Press Association Awards

Steve Artley has won a couple of awards -

Saturday, I attended the Virginia Press Association awards banquet in Norfolk. I and several hundred others received awards. Just like last year, I got 1st and 2nd place for editorial cartooning in non-daily publications (they call the category "illustrations"). Last year I came home with the  Best in Show plaque, but didn't get it this time (sniff).

Je Suis Charlie by Steve Artley

I offer my quickly rendered tribute to the satirists of Charlie Hebdo. Rather than a cleverly glib commentary, here I offer a serious statement. I proudly stand in plain view and loudly utter the phrase, "je suis Charlie (I am Charlie)!" This is what editorial cartoonists do; stand and show ourselves. On every one of our rendered opines we proudly inscribe our names for all to see. Yes, I drew this. Yes, I wrote this. I said this. Me, an individual with a voice. And, I published it, sent it to my syndicate, posted it on the Internet for all the world to see.

The cartoonists killed in the Paris attack today were not hiding unseen in the bushes. Unlike their murderers, the people killed were not nameless clandestine cowards who hide their identity under balaclavas and secret themselves away into hiding after perpetrating extreme violence on unarmed targets. They didn't use guns or bombs. No weapons were among their tools, nor were threats of violence issued. They openly drew pictures that lampooned, that provoked thought, that made a statement through satirical renderings. For that they were gunned down.I appeal to those who cherish freedom to stand united against these cowards, against those who aid them and against those who applaud them. Silence allows them to flourish, so speak out. Let your voices be heard, your pencils unsheathed, your keyboards tapped. ‪#‎JeSuisCharlie‬ ‪#‎CharlieHebdo‬

Cartoonists at Artomatic photographs

Cartoonists at Artomatic photos in my Flickr account. Exhibitors include David Hagen, Ben Claassen, Michael Auger (not pictured), Annie Lunsford, Karon Flage (photos by the former Small Press Expo/SPX head), illustrator Bono Mitchell and collagist Grace Yost. Bon vivant editorial cartoonist Steve Artley is in the pictures too. Hagen, ARtley, Auger, Lunsford and Mitchell all contributed to the Team Cul de Sac anthology which goes on sale tomorrow.

Editorial cartooning on ComicsDC: An Editorial

by Mike Rhode

It occurs to me that some readers might be wondering about the fact that we now have three editorial cartoonists appearing regularly here - Mike Flugennock, Bill Brown and Steve Artley.

As you would expect, all three are local cartoonists.

Steve Artley (a long-time member of the blog) is working through his archive of drawings with a long-term eye to donating them to a library, so I suggested that he share them with us as he scans them for his file.

William "Bill" Brown's work appeared in the Takoma Voice newspaper for years, and with the loss of that venue, he's publishing his work here at the moment. He's best known for his President Bill (later Citizen Bill) strips which have run for years.

Mike Flugennock identifies himself as an anarchist and has been producing political work for years, some of which one sees around town, as protest posters. He's been sharing his work with us for years now too, and I always enjoy it when I get a new one from him.

None of these people get paid by us, or reflect "our" viewpoint, and the site as a whole takes no advertising or generates any money anyway. There is no editorial work done on any cartoonist's submissions, so what you see is what they've decided to post. We, including our writers, are all here for our love of the medium.

Artley's Aphelion Arc's Exiles of Nod story is expanded version

Steve Artley previously published this story in Magic Bullet, but he tells me that his new webcomic, The Aphelion Arc has an extended version:

"The Exiles of Nod story can be viewed in its entirety, laid out in slide format for online viewing. Some new panels were added and the story has been enhanced from its original condensed version. Other stories are currently in production. I'm anticipating at least one full story per month to be completed, with previews appearing on the website. The print version will be a compilation of three stories, plus the "nerds' appendix." This special section provides a bit of insight and back story on the stories in each issue. Currently, I'm investigating funding options for printing and distributing the magazine. Michael Auger was the webmaster who brought vast plethora of my web artwork to life. "
