Flugennock's Latest'n'Greatest: "But... What About Abortion?"

From DC's anarchist cartoonist...

But... What About Abortion?
http://sinkers.org/stage/?p=3788

Normally, my Daily Random 15 Seconds Of MSNBC is your standard-issue
eyeroll-inducing partisan babbling, but Steve Kornacki's election
report last week totally warmed my heart. Best goddamn news I'd heard
in months. F'crissake, Genocide Joe is FIFTY POINTS UNDERWATER with
voters 18-34, reportedly the group he needs the most to get his filthy
ass re-elected. FIFTY POINTS.

So, after the better part of 4 years of immiserating the working
class, serving up shit-ass public health emergency response, ginning
up a New Red Scare, trying to instigate a world war non-stop, proudly
enabling a genocide overseas and trying to crush dissent at home, the
Democratic Party still wants us to turn out to play their little
Democracy Game with them. The bastards still think they can scare us
with that tired-ass abortion rights schtick, and that "Trump is worse"
horseshit, and their trademark "Democracy is at stake" drooling, but
guess what...? There's a whole new generation of folks out there who
aren't buying that shit, and sure as hell aren't going to pretend that
the Democrats haven't been actively funding and enabling a genocide
since last October.

FIFTY GODDAMN POINTS.
BWAH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Shop Open House Artist Talk: Sierra Barnes, Creating Comics with Procreate

Join artist Sierra Barnes as she discusses the art creation process for her first published Graphic Novel, "Hans Vogel is Dead Vol.1".

For this event, Sierra will discuss how she uses the digital art tool Procreate to plot out and create her comic books. She will also share how these tools translate into her digital fabrication projects at The Shop, the Arlington library's makerspace.  Sierra will end the event with an open Q&A for participants to pick her brain.  See more of Sierras artwork at: https://www.sierrabravoart.com/

Sierra Barnes is a comic creator and history buff who currently lives in Washington, DC, making webcomics and print comics based on history and folklore. She is particularly interested in the relationship between history, mythology, and memory, which are reflected in her storytelling. When she's not making comics, you can usually find her fabricating her digital drawings at The Shop, or haunting boba shops and museums like a very nerdy ghost.

Bob Eckstein visits the National Portrait Gallery in his new book

This is excerpted from his 2/1/24 newsletter.

My new book is here: Footnotes from the Most Fascinating Museums: Stories and Memorable Moments from People Who Love Museums by Chronicle Books. The hardcover book comes out on National Museum Day,  May 18th, but can be pre-ordered NOWIt can be pre-ordered NOW.

Inside the book you will find 155 original pieces of artwork, illustrating 75 museums. There are stories for each museum in the book, some highlighting the museum (it's history or a story about the place), some showcasing a particular piece of work in the museums collection. The stories come from curators, museum workers, or museum visitors as well as museum lovers and friends…and some unexpected sources like Michelle Obama, Bill Murray, Ozzy Osborne and my mom.

A special thanks to acclaimed writer Elizabeth McCracken for the Foreword — I love it.

The National Museum of American Illustration in Newport, Rhode Island from Footnotes from the Most Fascinating Museum

The museums include the biggest (The MET and The Smithsonian) as well as the offbeat (Museum of Bad Art, the Spam Museum), spanning North America — the US, Canada, and Mexico. These museums span collections that specialize in art, natural history, academia and science, and more. Featured museums include:

Bainbridge Island Museum, Bainbridge Island, Washington
  • American Museum of Natural History, New York

  • Chapultepec Castle, Mexico City, Mexico

  • The Field Museum, Chicago

  • Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston

  • La Brea Tar Pits, Los Angeles

  • Museum of Motherhood, St. Petersburg, Florida

  • The National Portrait Gallery, Washington DC

  • The Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge, MA

  • The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City

  • And 56 more

I tried to think of what I could do as a sequel to my Footnotes from the World's Greatest Bookstores book when I had heard about how much museums were struggling due to the pandemic. I decided a book on museums would not only be fun but by showing off these museums, people would want to get out to see these places.

In order to write the book, I visited many museums in a very short period (some I visited on-line). I didn't realize there were hundreds, and on every topic imaginable (and I consider myself to be a museum-goer who lives in New York City). So I talked with people everywhere I went as I continuously drew, inspired by the artwork and conversations I had just experienced in the museums.I draw, inspired by the artwork I had just seen in the museums. I kind of wish this project never ended. That's my wish. If this book is well-received and I would love nothing better then to have the opportunity to do a sequel, one that includes those museums that didn't make it into this book, but also, I would like to expand the project to include museums from around the world.

Nuns on the log flume at Noah's Ark Encounter, Williamstown, Kentucky

But first things first. I just hope that when one reads the book it conveys some of the same exhilaration I felt when I encountered the museums (and convinces you to then visit or at least plan a visit some of them. Maybe the book can become a museum bucket list.).

Nowadays, any book's success is driven by word-of-mouth and reviews. So, if you enjoy the book, I would greatly appreciate any love you can give my way. Here are some enthusiastic reviews so far…

"A beautifully written and painted love letter to the museums of North America."
— Max Hollein, director & CEO, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY

"Bob Eckstein is a national treasure."  — David Plotz, CEO of City Cast, former CEO of Atlas Obscura

"Bob knows how to make a book come alive. And the range of his artistic taste is very impressive. Where else would you find the Museum of Fine Arts Boston alongside the Spam Museum?"  — Sir Michael Palin, actor, comedian, author, and member of Monty Python

"A serene collection of some of North America's most famous museums. Suitable for all ages and great for finding new places to visit." — Library Journal

I'm the Exhibits and Media Reviews editor, and assistant editor, for the International Journal of Comic Art, and I've written for Hogan's Alley and the Comics Journal. (One of my first articles for IJOCA is reprinted here on ComicsDC). A good recent article is in White House History on the cartoon-decorated Hay-Adams Hotel bar, Off the Record. I've been a judge for the RFK Journalism Awards editorial cartoon division from 2009-2022 and in 2015, 2016 & 2020, I was a Herblock Award judge. I've edited Harvey Pekar: Conversations, a book of interviews for the University Press of Mississippi which is available now. In 2012, I edited and published Biographical Sketches of Cartoonists & Illustrators in the Swann Collection of the Library of Congress by LOC’s curator Sara Duke. In 2014, I co-edited The Art of Richard Thompson and The Incomplete Art of "Why Things Are" by Richard Thompson in 2017. In 2022, I edited and published Compleating Cul de Sac, 2nd edition focused on Richard Thompson's comic strip. In 2008 for my ComicsDC blog, I was chosen Best (Comics) Art Blogger by the Washington City Paper and from 2010-16, I wrote on comics for the Washington City Paper. You can see most of my writings at my Academia.edu page. The Library of Congress and Michigan State University's Library's Comic Art Collection both have "Michael Rhode collections" of cartooning items I've donated, and MSU has individually cataloged hundreds of them. From 2015-2019, 2022-, I'm an associate member of the National Cartoonists Society. I've written two short comics pieces, illustrated by Kevin Rechin, for Matt Dembicki's non-fiction comics anthologies District Comics and Redistricted.

Reader maps, or Where in the world is ComicsDC?

Our First Principle

"I try to be interested in very nearly everything. I always think boredom is to some extent the fault of the bored." - Julian Kestrel, the hero in Kate Ross's novel Cut to the Quick.

Our Second Principle

"It takes less time to do a thing right than to explain why you did it wrong" - Longfellow, quoted on an Elliot's Amazing bottlecap.

What's it all mean in the end?

"Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp,
Or what's a heaven for?"

Robert Browning in Andrea del Sarto
