That darn Mike Du Jour

'Mike Du Jour' has seen better days

Steven Alan Honley, Washington

Washington Post (November 25 2023): A15.

online at https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/11/24/israel-gaza-parenting-camping-congress-whigs/

For four decades, I've enjoyed the variety of styles and subject matter represented in the comics section. I still mourn the decision to cut the comics from three pages to two. There are a few strips I skip over, and sadly, "Mike Du Jour" has joined their ranks.

That's not because Mike Lester is a conservative cartoonist. I actually enjoy Scott Stantis's "Prickly City," which started out as extremely right-wing but has mellowed over the years. It's because Lester's cleverness has curdled into cheap shots. He recently devoted a week of the strip to equating Black Lives Matter with the black bear that broke into a freezer to eat lasagna. And the Nov. 13 "Mike Du Jour" calls the American Ornithological Society "birdbrained" for its decision to change the appellations of birds that had been named for enslavers and racists.

I'm not asking The Post to pull the strip, but I urge editors to ask themselves whether Lester's brand of humor belongs in its lineup. My answer would be no.

That darn Baldo

Versos sinceros [Baldo letter]

James S. Noe, Gaithersburg

Washington Post (November 25 2023): A15.

I was delighted when I saw the Nov. 5 "Baldo" comic strip, which depicted a family singing "Guantanamera" in Spanish.

For an even more uplifting experience of that delightful song, listen to the Playing for Change performance of "Guantanamera." It features more than 75 Cuban musicians. Conveniently, for those who can't speak Spanish, including me, the captions are in English.

>>> QUEER BOOK CLUB & AUTHOR SIGNING: BOYS WEEKEND WITH MATTIE LUBCHANSKY!
>> SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2nd @ 3pm

In-person author event alert! In collaboration with DC Trans Book Club we're hosting award-winning cartoonist Mattie Lubchansky to discuss & sign their graphic novel BOYS WEEKEND, available at Fantom now!

Part satire, part horror, Boys Weekend explores what it's like to exist as a transfemme person in a man's world, the difficulty of maintaining friendships through transition, and the more cult-like effects of masculinity, "hustle" culture, and capitalism—all through the vibrant lens of a surreal, scary, and immensely imaginative romp.

Fantom is on the 2nd floor, up 23 stairs. Masks encouraged.

Get a copy of BOYS WEEKEND in-store or on our website here: https://stores.comichub.com/fantom_comics/products/boys-weekend-hardcover-graphic-novel-mature-

>>> AUTHOR EVENT & SIGNING: SCHOOL FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL GIRLS w/ JAMIE NOGUCHI & DANIELLE CORSETTO!
>> SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3rd @ 3pm!

The students of SCHOOL FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL GIRLS soar again! Join longtime Fantom friend Jamie Noguchi & Danielle Corsetto at FANTOM COMICS for a launch celebration and signing of volume 2 of the hit coming-of-age sci-fi adventure!

FROM VOLUME 1:

Tara Smith's parents are super strict with all their rules and routines, and Tara is a dutiful daughter. Rule #1: No friends her own age. Rule #2: keep her bracelet on, or else. But when she breaks her routine—and then loses her bracelet—she's in trouble.

Now outed as an extraterrestrial after wielding fire and losing her humanoid form, Tara is captured by the government. She's given two options: get shipped far away where she won't be a danger to anyone or stay on Earth and join a school for other extraterrestrial girls like her. Things at the school aren't easy—especially for the girl whose only friends were textbooks. But Tara's goal to learn how to control her powers is soon sidelined by the discovery that the people she's called Mom and Dad all these years aren't her parents.

Copies of the books will be available for purchase at the event!

Flugennock's Latest'n'Greatest: "Rules-Based Order"

From DC's anarchist cartoonist -

"Rules-Based Order"
http://sinkers.org/stage/?p=3739

To think that all the arduous years I spent assiduously avoiding
dropping a "fallen and can't get up" gag could be undone by this
single column at The Cradle last week. If Amerika's imperial
batshittery in Ukraine hasn't totally wrecked our rep with the rest of
the Earth, than our enabling Israeli butchery in Palestine pretty much
ripped our mask the rest of the way off.

We've fallen, and we can't get up.
