Mike Flugennock's Latest'n'Greatest: "Met Gala"

It's a story as old as time — or at least as old as the Democratic Party: discover a groundswell of pro-worker, progressive sentiment; find yourselves a fresh, charismatic candidate who does a great job of pretending to be progressive; rope in Left voters to help elect her — at which point she turns around and starts engaging in empty, performative protest and fluffy media talk while she runs cover for the DNC donor class, while the working class is left with less than zero once again.

So it was at the Met Gala in New York City this week. While police brutalized protesters outside the Gala NY Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Liberals' current reigning Yas Kween, was inside showing the bourgeoisie how bad-assed she was by sporting a message in support of tepid, half-assed reformist Liberal legislation that does absolutely jack to separate the 1% from even the most minute subatomic particle of the obscene wealth they've been hoarding at working-class expense.

The Post isn't impressed with Y: the Last Man

In the sci-fi drama series 'Y: The Last Man,' half of society drops dead, and it's ponderous picking up the pieces [in print as Apocalyptic world is left with lifeless characters]

RIP Former cartoonist David Simonson, of Arlington

David C. Simonson

May 9, 1927 ~ August 27, 2021 (age 94)
Everly Wheatley Funeral Home

David worked at the Mt. Kisco, N.Y. Patent Trader, a semi-weekly newspaper covering Northern Westchester and Putnam Counties, starting as reporter and working his way up to be publisher. It was there that his clever wit and artistic talent yielded a twice weekly cartoon of suburban life that became a much-anticipated feature of the paper. Many of his cartoons appeared in national publications, including The Reader's Digest.  David and his family moved to Glenview, Illinois in 1977, where he became publisher and president of Pioneer Press, a subsidiary of Time, Inc.  During his tenure at Pioneer Press, he expanded the business from 13 to 41 local newspapers in suburban Chicago. Again, his cartoon became a staple of the weekly papers. In 1987, he became Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the National Newspaper Association in Washington D.C., and he and Lois moved to Arlington, Virginia.

So, after getting the worst of Hurricane Ida, Louisiana is about to
get the worst of the still-ongoing oil spill from somewhere in the
thousands of miles of decomissioned and abandoned pipeline —
previously owned and operated by who the hell knows who — on the
bottom of the Gulf Of Mexico.

"The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement has allowed the
offshore oil and gas industry to leave 97 percent of pipelines (18,000
miles) on the seafloor when no longer in use" since the 1960s, said a
report issued by the Government Accountability Office earlier this year.

Due to a publishing delay beyond our control, this event has been rescheduled to Tuesday, October 26, at 7 EST.

Teenage Siena lives and breathes ballet. Her dedication earns her a spot at the School of American Ballet; her long-term plan is New York City Ballet or bust. In spite of her talent, Siena struggles with self-doubt and injury, leading her to question her dream. But what else could she do, when ballet is all she knows? This loving ode to ballet also questions its sometimes grueling practices. Siena Cherson Siegel's graphic memoir of her own experiences as a young ballet dancer will engage readers of all ages who love dance. Illustrations by Mark Siegel exquisitely capture the dancers' graceful movements.

Siena Cherson Siegel is an author and former dancer who trained at the School of American Ballet. To Dance and Tiny Dancer are stories from her life.

Mark Siegel is known both as an author, illustrator, and as the editorial director of First Second Books, a Macmillan imprint that publishes graphic novels for all ages.

Ages 12 to adult

Each purchase of Tiny Dancer will come with a signed bookplate, while supplies last.

With Great Responsibility: The Spider-Man Origin Story in Art and Comic Books

Date and Location

Part of 2021 National Book Festival

Request ADA accommodations five business days in advance at (202) 707-6362 or ADA@loc.gov.

Before Spider-Man leaped off the pages of comic books into the movies, Steve Ditko, a cartoonist, and Stan Lee, a scriptwriter, sat down at their desks and invented him. The Library of Congress possesses the original drawings for their collaboration, which appeared in the August 1962 issue of "Amazing Fantasy." Together we look at the moment the radioactive spider bit Peter Parker, turning him from a lonely teenager into a superhero. We discuss how Steve Ditko changed his art in reaction to Stan Lee's editorial notations in the margins of the drawing. Specialists present the art in an interactive format, highlighting the artistic creative process, including how Ditko drew the costume for the first time and how it differs from what Spider-Man wears today. We also discuss how Peter comes to learn "with great power there must also come — great responsibility!" Conceived as an interactive event aimed at children and young adults who may be aware only of the Marvel movies, Library staff will highlight and discuss that the story came from a book — a comic book — and the imaginative possibilities of a talented writer and artist working as a team.

Learn more about the Library of Congress experts participating in the National Book Festival, including Sara W. Duke from the Prints and Photographs Division and Megan Halsband from the Serial and Government Publications Division.
