Run: Book One is a companion graphic memoir to the award-winning trilogy March, conceived by civil rights icon John Lewis and longtime collaborator Andrew Aydin and illustrated by Nate Powell and L. Fury.

Run continues where March left off to tell an often-overlooked chapter of civil rights history. Prior to his passing, John Lewis stated, "In sharing my story, it is my hope that a new generation will be inspired by Run to actively participate in the democratic process and help build a more perfect union here in America." Run picks up after the 1965 march in Selma. Lewis and colleagues are facing arrest and the Ku Klux Klan is planning one of their largest rallies yet. Soon after the passage of the Voting Rights Act, the six-day Watts Rebellion breaks out in Los Angeles. Lewis shares his experiences as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, its tensions with the NAACP and Urban League, controversial stances. Lewis shines a light on the unsung heroes who undertook the sometimes-deadly work of Black voter registration and other grassroots social justice efforts. The connection between these events and current racial tensions and protest movements provides a platform for discussion of the work that still needs to be completed.

The creators of Run will be joined in conversation with Anthony Dixon, Congressman John Lewis' nephew. Jonathan Gayles, Ph.D., will moderate the discussion. Andrew Aydin is a bestselling and award-winning writer. He was the Digital Director and Policy Advisor and longtime collaborator to the late Georgia congressman John Lewis as well as the creator and co-author of  March. He splits his time between Washington, D.C., and Hendersonville, NC. Nate Powell is a New York Times bestselling, award-winning graphic novelist; his work includes the March trilogy, Rick Riordan's The Lost Hero, and Save It for Later. Powell is the first and only cartoonist ever to win the National Book Award. Powell lives in Bloomington, Indiana. L. Fury is a lifelong resident of Houston, Texas with a BFA in animation from Sam Houston State University. She dove into comics full time in 2015 with the humor webcomic Bastard Comics before shifting her sights to long-form comics, illustrating the unreleased Double Barrel Shogun. Run  is Fury's first graphic book. Anthony Dixon has been a firefighter with the Los Angeles County Fire Department for over 30 years. He is Congressman John Lewis' nephew. Late this past spring, even while the Delta Variant was spreading in 
Europe and elsewhere, Gropin' Joe went on TV in the White House Rose 
Garden, pulled off his mask and declared the pandemic over, calling it 
"a great day for America" — following later this summer with what had 
to be the weakest, most pointless COVID vaccine policy ever. Regular 
testing and a mask  requirement? That's it? Not "get vaccinated or get 
fired"?

Needless to say, the Washington Post and crew were right on top of it, 
cranking out articles about how wonderful it is to be re-emerging, to 
go back to "normal", sometimes vaguely insuinuating that people still 
wearing masks in the grocery store were "the new weirdos" — as opposed 
to the knobs who thought they were being muzzled and forced to breathe 
their own CO2, who were last year's weirdos.

Yeah... that sure aged well, didn't it? Seems that Biden & Gang are 
employing the same strategy Trump did after the last election.

The 4 stores in the local Big Planet chain are largely staying out of FCBD this year. College Park will do FCBD, but everyone must wear a mask, and there will be a limit on how many people are in the store at once. College Park will also do a 10% off sale.U St and Vienna are open for regular sales; Bethesda remains curbside pickup only.

Fantom Comics is doing FCBD with Jaime Noguchi attending, masks and limited attendance are enforced.

Fantom Comics is pleased to celebrate the return of Free Comic Book Day with a full day of comics giveaways, raffles, sales, and festive activities at the store.

We are also happy to announce that we will have comics artist and creator, Jamie Noguchi, in the store to promote his work, such as the recent title for younger readers, "School For Extraterrestrial Girls". Jamie will do some sketching, talk about his current and upcoming projects, and generally share his experiences as a comics creator.

Enthusiasm for Free Comic Book Day is always high, and Fantom will be limiting in-store shopping to 20 customers at a time, so we ask that all visitors be patient and observe responsible COVID practices. Masks will be required at all times in the store.
