Flugennock's Latest'n'Greatest: "Thanks, Washington Post (finally)"

Mike Flugennock, DC's anarchist cartoonist, takes on a local issue:

Thanks, Washington Post (finally)

Inspired by this article I saw at CounterPunch back in March. After
all this time kind of looking the other way while he raked in the bank
on cushy side gigs and other shenanigans, the Washington Post finally
could stand no more and actually investigated Ward 2 councilmember
Jack Evans.

Pop Culture Happy Hour on Toy Story 4

'Toy Story 4' Mixes Nostalgia And Existential Dread

    Pop Culture Happy Hour

Woody (Tom Hanks) and Bo Peep (Annie Potts) reunite in Toy Story 4.

Pixar/Disney/Pixar

The Toy Story movies have been skittering around the closets of our hearts for almost 25 years. Anchored by Woody the sheriff, voiced by Tom Hanks, they're central to the story of Pixar. Now we're up to Toy Story 4. This time, Woody has to protect a homemade toy named Forky, voiced by Tony Hale. Forky may just be a spork with a face, but he's special to Bonnie, the little girl Woody lives with.

Box Brown
Box Brown is an Ignatz Award-winning cartoonist, illustrator, and comic publisher from Philadelphia. Eleanor Davis is a cartoonist and illustrator. Her books include How To Be Happy, You and a Bike and a Road, Why Art? and The Secret Science Alliance and the Copycat Crook. The Hard Tomorrow is Eleanor's first book published by Drawn & Quarterly. She lives in Athens, Georgia.

Eleanor Davis's The Hard Tomorrow blazes unrestrained, as moments of human connection are doused in fear and threats. Her astute projections probe at current anxieties in a cautionary tale that begs the question: What will happen after tomorrow?
Ed Piskor
Ed Piskor (b. 1982) lives and draws out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a former student of the Kubert School, has collaborated with Harvey Pekar, and put out the graphic novel Wizzywig. Jaime Hernandez
Jaime Hernandez was born and raised in Oxnard, California. Together with his brothers Gilbert and Mario, Jaime co-created the comics series Love and Rockets in 1981, which Gilbert and Jaime continue to this day. Jaime's work is a perfect synthesis of the anarchistic, DIY aesthetic of the punk scene and elegant cartooning reminiscent of Charles Schulz and Alex Toth. Love and Rockets has evolved into one of the great bodies of American literary fiction, spanning four decades and countless high-water marks in the medium's history. In 2017, Jaime and Gilbert were inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame. This year, he adds two new collections to the Love and Rockets catalog: Is This How You See Me? and Tonta.
Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons. SPX is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that brings together more than 650 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, and distributors each year. 12-1pm, Washington Convention Center, 207B

GNCRT President's Program - State of the Comics Union: Past, Present, and Future
1-2:30pm, Washington Convention Center, 146B

Comics have changed dramatically over the last twenty years. Not only has the format itself changed in terms of platforms and media, but new creators and readers have transformed library collections. Comics are now broadly accepted and celebrated. In the newly established Graphic Novels & Comics Roundtable's first President's program, we invite innovative, stellar creators to discuss from their perspective how the format has changed. We will discuss how libraries and librarians have influenced their work and where they see room for growth as we enter the next decade. All of our programs and events at ALA Annual take stock of the state of the comics union; discussions continue during the entire conference. Together, let's reflect on how far we've come, where we are today and envision what our future may bring.
Speakers: Jason Lutes, Raina Telgemeier, Jaime Hernandez

Discussing Social Issues through Speculative Comics

Attendees will learn about expressing strong emotion and experiences graphically, the difficulties of first-person narration and reportage, and receive suggestions for their collections.

The Book of Sarah is missing from the bible, so artist Sarah Lightman sets out to make her own: questioning religion, family, motherhood and what it takes to
be an artist, in this quietly subversive visual autobiography from NW3. Distilled
from hundreds of intensely beautiful diary drawings into a compelling narrative
of identity, The Book of Sarah is both a comfort and inspiration to anyone who
wants to know how to belong as an artist to a family, a culture, and a religion.

Praise for The Book of Sarah
'A wonderful, absorbing, enjoyable book. There is so much in it. It's like making a new intimate friend AND it will help people who have been through their own rites of passage or need to. I love it A LOT!' Philippa Perry
'An astounding work of insight and clarity… so eloquently expressed, especially the family's long-standing tradition of stifling ambition, autonomy and independence— thereby thwarting so much potential - that it almost broke me. It will resonate with so many, helping to show them that they're not alone.' Stephen Holland, Page 45
'Full of the most wonderful drawings. An important feminist book—as well as a real joy to read.' Bobby Baker
'Absolutely beautiful. It's so moving to see such intimately domestic moments
collected and sanctified.' Leah Vincent
'An extraordinary treasure… heartfelt and honest, searching and tender.' Maureen Burdock
'I loved this subtle memoir about Judaism, feminism, bad dates and good books, the families we are born into and the ones we make.' Ariela Freedman
'Stunning…The power of the book lies in the atmosphere created by a distilled
emotion in the words, alongside the very haunting images.' Ann Miller
'An achingly poignant, profoundly moving and, ultimately, hopeful book.' Ruth
Gilbert
'I love The Book of Sarah. A deeply layered work—a memoir that is rich with
revelations.' Samantha Baskind

Praise for Sarah Lightman
'Lightman is … a tour de force'. Hillary Chute, Images
'The real power in the work comes from Lightman's wit and imagination, which
has a lightness that belies the seriousness of the existential questions within.' Nadia Valman and Rachel Garfield, Jewish Quarterly.
'Sarah Lightman is like the poster-child for a new kind of feminist activist— scholar, artist, curator, and cheerleader for comics that reveal and shape new forms of Jewish consciousness'. Ariel Kahn, Jewish Quarterly
