Hidden Treasure of the National Library of Medicine is now FREE online.  "Why tell me?" you ask - because I have a piece on World War II US Navy medical animation at page 89 of the pdf file, and Malaria Mack cartoon calendars are featured right before that. Also Huber the Tuber cartoon books are spotlighted.  And it's free. My friends at the Library and Blast Books did a lovely job on this book, and I recommend it highly.

Joe Sutliff's new book is Bite Buster in Fight the Bite! published by the Fairfax County Health Department.  It's public health education about mosquitoes and ticks, with a Batman wink. I don't see more information about the book itself on their webpage but Joe did the artwork for the short video at the bottom.

Throughout the early 2000s, while working on Liberty Meadows, he also provided cover art for Marvel, Image, and Dark Horse Comics working on such titles as Ultimate Spider-Man, Invincible, and Hellboy: Weird Tales. He was nominated for 3 Harvey Awards in 2006 (Best Artist, Best Cartoonist, and Best Cover Artist). He likes drawing monkeys. British comic artist Barry Kitson broke into the industry while drawing Spider-Man for Marvel UK in 1985. Throughout his career, he has worked on such titles as Amazing Spider-Man, Legion of Superheroes, 2000 AD, Batman, and Incredible Hulks. He is currently handling art duties for Marvel's Captain America and Iron Man.  Mike Mignola developed his skills as an inker and penciler throughout the '80s and '90s, working on various titles for both Marvel and DC, including Incredible Hulk, Rocket Raccoon, and Batman. In 1994, after years of work-for-hire, he illustrated his first creator-owned story, Hellboy: The Seed of Destruction, for Dark Horse Comics. He's won Harvey Awards in 1995, 1996, 2000, 2008, and 2010 for various categories, and is currently working on the latest Hellboy mini-series, Hellboy in Hell. Since breaking into the industry in 2005, artist Chris Samnee has drawn comics for Marvel, DC/Vertigo, Dark Horse, IDW, and Oni Press, including Captain America & Bucky, Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps, Serenity: The Shephard's Tale, and Queen & Country. He is currently working on Daredevil from Marvel Comics and The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom for IDW.  Mark Waid is well known for his eight-year run as writer of the DC Comics' title The Flash, as well as his seminal work on Kingdom Come and Superman: Birthright. In addition, Waid served as Editor-in-Chief and Chief Creative Officer of BOOM! Studios from 2007 to 2010, where he created and wrote Irredeemable and Incorruptible. In 2012, he launched and co-created thrillbent.com, an experiment in new-media publishing, as well as winning multiple Harvey Awards for his work on Daredevil. Shattered Asian American Comics Anthology photos

Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology - A Secret Identities Book - had a booksigning at Busboys and Poets, Washington, DC, with editors Jeff Yang and Keith Chow, filmmaker Michael Kang and cartoonist Jamie Noguchi. The talk went for about an hour and a half and culminated in a 'design a supervillain' crowdsourcing event. The Stain is the audience-designed character drawn by Noguchi. The talk was enjoyable. I read a few stories in the book while waiting and enjoyed the ones by Kang and Noguchi; Bernard Chang's was disappointing because it concludes online somewhere. More pictures are online here.

 AnimeUSA runs this weekend of November 9th-11th at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, DC.  This is always a nice, fun con, with a lot of cosplay. It's particularly good for teens. Things appear to start at noon on Friday. They've put their programming schedule online too.
