Project Update #17: BLOOP: Part One by Steve Conley

Project Update #17: Two more cartoonists announced!

Posted by Steve Conley Like
Three days to go and we're getting ever closer to our first stretch goal! I'm excited to announce the addition of two more contributions to the BLOOP jam print:
  • Zuzu by Nick Galifianakis: Nick is America's premiere relationship cartoonist and one of my oldest pals in cartooning. His latest book is If You Loved Me, You'd Think This Was Cute: Uncomfortably True Cartoons About You
  • Action Cat and Adventure Bug by Art Baltazar. Art is one of the nicest people I've ever met in comics and I love, love, love his work. Art, and his cohort Franco, recently opened their own comics shop called AW YEAH Comics.
Nick and Art join James A. Owen, Batton Lash, Andy Runton, Marty Baumann, Jamar Nicholas, Rich Faber, John Gallagher, Jimmy Gownley, Carolyn Belefski, Rick Veitch, Frank Cho, Dean Haspiel, Graham Nolan, Jerry Ordway and Scott Christian Sava!
These last three days will be exciting for sure! :D

Small Press Expo (SPX) this weekend

I hope everyone had a great time at Baltimore Comicon last weekend, it was good to see some of you there, and there were some amazing costumes again! The local convention scene continues this weekend, as the Small Press Expo (SPX) returns to North Bethesda on Saturday and Sunday! I cannot recommend SPX highly enough, it is my favorite convention. Focusing on independent publishers, small press, and self-publishers, SPX is a show unlike any other. Instead of a room full of dealers, you are almost always buying comics directly from the person who made it, and you will see a lot of amazing comics you've never heard of before! Plus this year has a lot of amazing guests, like the Hernandez Bros., Adrian Tomine, Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware, and more!

SPX is at up in North Bethesda, 2 blocks from the White Flint metro on the Red Line.

UPCOMING - September 22 - Raina Telgemeier signing Drama

Raina Telgemeier, creator of the New York Times bestseller Smile, will be appearing at both our Vienna and College Park stores on Saturday, September 22, for her brand new book Drama!

Callie loves theater. And while she would totally try out for her middle school's production of Moon Over Mississippi, she's a terrible singer. Instead she's the set designer for the stage crew, and this year she's determined to create a set worthy of Broadway on a middle-school budget. But how can she, when she doesn't know much about carpentry, ticket sales are down, and the crew members are having trouble working together? Not to mention the onstage AND offstage drama that occurs once the actors are chosen, and when two cute brothers enter the picture, things get even crazier! Following the success of Smile, Raina Telgemeier brings us another graphic novel featuring a diverse set of characters that humorously explores friendship, crushes, and all-around drama!

Bethesda, Maryland; September 12, 2012 – Small Press Expo is pleased to announce an historic lineup of guests appearing at this year's show.  Taking place this weekend, SPX 2012 boasts a murderer's row of talent, with an indie comix fan's dream guest list featuring—for the first time ever at a single event—Chris Ware, Françoise Mouly, Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez, Daniel Clowes, and Adrian Tomine.

This legendary group of creators has collectively won fifteen Ignatz Awards since the festival prize was instituted at 1997's inaugural SPX.  Among the nominees for the 2012 Ignatz Awards, Los Bros Hernandez are represented in three categories (Outstanding Artist, Outstanding Story, and Outstanding Series).  The 2012 Ignatz Awards will be presented Saturday at 9:30 P.M.

Limited edition posters by Chris Ware, as well as a tote bag of Daniel Clowes art designed by Alvin Buenaventura, will be available at the SPX Sales Table. There will be a special set of all of the posters, flyers, banners and program guide cover signed by the artists in an edition of 25, as well as a poster of the badges designed by Jaime Hernandez, also for sale.

In addition,  appearing at this years show are such honored guests as Michael DeForge, Lille Carre, Becky Dreistadt, Dean Haspiel, and Nick Abadzis.  Guests will be participating in a compelling lineup of programming taking place both Saturday and Sunday, featuring several "spotlight" sessions on individual creators, in addition to panel discussions and special presentations.

SPX is also pleased to announce that publishers NoBrow and Koyama Press will be making their first appearances at SPX 2012, joining longtime SPX participating publishers such as Top Shelf, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, and Oni Press in showcasing their latest and greatest books.

    About SPX

Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons. SPX is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit that brings together more than 300 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, and distributors each year. As in previous years, profits from the SPX will go to support the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program, which funds graphic novel purchases for public and academic libraries, as well as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), which protects the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals. For more information on the CBLDF, visit their website at http://www.cbldf.org.

SPX 2012 will be held Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16.  For more information on the Small Press Expo, please visit http://www.spxpo.com.

Malaysian cartoonist Zunar arrives in DC

    From Steve Artley:
Andrew "Drew" Rougier-Chapman of Cartoonists Rights Network International (CRNI) called me to report that Malaysian cartoonist Zunar arrived in Washington DC yesterday. He will attend the AAEC Convention to accept the CRNI Courage in Cartooning award.

Drew also wanted to alert fellow cartoonists to a protest planned today at the Malaysian embassy between 5:30 and 6:30 PM. The Embassy of Malaysia is located at 3516 International Court NW in Washington DC.

Drew stated, "We will be drawing (pun intended) attention to the lack of freedom of the press and freedom of speech in Malaysia. More specifically we hope to draw attention to the Malaysian government's banning of editorial cartoons by well-known cartoonist Zunar and other Malaysian editorial cartoonists."

If anyone is so inspired to join in the protest, Drew suggests that you take the Metro to the Van Ness-UDC stop and exit on the west side of Connecticut Avenue. At the top of the stairs make a U-turn and walk back toward Van Ness Street. Turn right on Van Ness Street and walk about 500 yards. Make a right turn onto International Court. "Follow the street until you hear and see Zunar and other supporters of free speech," said Drew, adding, "I hope you can join us."

I recorded the Team Cul de Sac session and it's online at the Internet Archive. You can download it or listen from the site.

"When Richard Thompson, the creator of the comic strip Cul de Sac, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, his friend Chris Sparks began a fundraising effort to honor his friend. With Richard's support, he asked others to donate artwork featuring the Cul de Sac characters for a Team Cul de Sac book with proceeds going to The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research. Now, join Chris Sparks and other members of Team Cul de Sac including Steve Conley, Matt Dembicki, SL Gallant, Roger Langridge, and others as they discuss the book, Richard Thompson's work, and their continuing efforts to raise funds in Richard's name." - from the program book. The panel also included Carolyn Belefski, Dawn Griffin, Donna Lewis, Joe Sutliff and was moderated by Mike Rhode.
