About the Panelists

The artist Sue Coe has found a way to serve a broad audience through printmaking, disseminating her messages through affordably-priced prints accessible to people of all financial means. Numerous books and visual essays published over the years have served a similar purpose, includingCruel, a critical look at the animal industry, built upon her groundbreaking Dead Meat (1996), and The Animals' Vegan Manifesto, published in 2016, featuring 100 original woodcuts and linocuts. American Fascism Now, published in October 2020 by Rotland Press, presents 16 linocut prints with text by the art historian Stephen F. Eisenman.  Coe's work has been recognized by a number of major awards and her 2018 solo exhibition at MoMA PS1, "Sue Coe: Graphic Resistance," received rave reviews. Since 2016, the artist has focused on documenting the misdeeds of the Trump administration.

Next month, the artist Christopher Sperandio releases his latest graphic novel, GREENIE JOSEPHENIE (Argle Bargle, Ottawa, Canada) about a super heroine who wages war against global conglomerates. He has long addressed issues of labor and class inequality and is an obsessive on comic history and production, having made his first comic strip-inspired font more than 25 years ago and produced/co-produced more than 20 comic books. Sperandio is the founder of CATS, the Comic Art Teaching and Study Workshop at Rice University, where he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art.

Ryan Standfest is an artist, arts writer, and the editor-in-chief and publisher of Rotland Press, which presents satirical publications of a culturally relevant nature, including the recently released THE PLAGUE REVIEW, a digest of pandemic dispatches, humor and musing. His publications and prints are in numerous major collections, and his work has been exhibited widely, both in the United States and abroad. Standfest has penned criticism and essays for the Detroit arts and culture journal Infinite Mile, Detroit Art Review, and Essay'd. He contributed a chapter on André Breton and l'humour noir to the book Radical Dreams: Surrealism, Counterculture, Resistance, edited by Elliott H. King and Abigail Susik, forthcoming from Penn State University Press in 2021. Websites: ryanstandfest.com (studio) and rotlandpress.com (publishing).

Stanley Wany is a multidisciplinary artist whose main focus is creating graphic novels. His practice also includes experimentation in painting and ink. He holds a degree in arts and design from the Université du Québec en Outaouais where he also founded Trip magazine. In 2016, his first graphic novel, Agalma, was nominated for a Doug Wright Award (Toronto Comics and Arts Festival) for best alternative comic, and for a Prix Expozine (Expozine, independent editors' festival in Montreal). Past trips include the Helsinki Comics Festival (Finland), the Festival de bande dessinée d'Angoulême (France), the Festival de bande dessinée de Colomiers (France), and Amadora BD: International Comics Festival (Portugal). He was an artist in residence at the Arteles Creative Centre in May 2018 and in the latter part the same year, he was awarded a creation grant from the Canada Council for the Arts for the production of his next graphic novel.

PR: 2021 Ignatz Submissions Info for Small Press Expo

Hello Everyone!

Between juggling the information about COVID vaccination rates and re-openings from the State of Maryland, Montgomery County and the Marriott, we are still trying to figure out whether we will hold an in-person show this year. So we do not hold up the Ignatz process, we are going to move forward with again using PDF file submissions for the 2021 Ignatz Awards.

As it was last year, we will only be accepting PDFs to be submitted to the Ignatz jurors.

Here is the process for submitting your mini-comics, comics, graphic novels and anthologies for the SPX 2021 Ignatz Awards:

  • Submissions must have been published between June 1, 2020 and May 30, 2021, and the deadline for all submissions is June 1, 2021
  • Go to this shared public folder to drop PDFs of your comics. All you have to do is place your PDF in that folder, and we will get it to the Ignatz jurors
  • We are ONLY accepting single-file PDFs of the comics - we cannot accept folders of files, or comics in other formats
  • Each file must be named with the following naming convention:
  • For mini-comics, comics and graphic novels:
CreatorLastName.CreatorFirstName.Comic_Title.IssueNumber.Publisher.PubMonthPubYear.pdf

  • For example: Hanselmann.Simon.Bad_Gateway.Fantagraphics.July2020.pdf
NOTES: If there is no Issue Number, then do not put one in the file name
If it is self published, put Self as the Publisher
  • For anthologies:
EditorLastName.EditorFirstName.Comic_Title..Publisher.PubMonthPubYear.pdf
  • For example: Terry.Laura.AnnaStrong.Comics_for_Choice.Self.June2020.PDF
NOTE: If there are multiple editors, use only the first one listed on the title page.
  • Please do not assume we will figure out the creator's name, publisher, etc., as we simply won't have the time/person power
Ok, that's it. Please let us know any questions you have, and thanks so much for making great art!!

The tradition continues, kids. This year, it's coming to you live from Washington, DC. I am a short walk from the the White House. The only thing between me and it are a few blocks, thousands of cops, military, Secret Service agents, attack dogs, and a huge chain link fence.

Tonight, I'll be sitting in my hotel room and posting quick sketches of breaking news as results pour in. Occasionally, I'll venture outside and report what's going on in the streets.

Here are the details for tonight's show:

Time: I don't know. It'll start when it starts.

Location: Washington, DC (somewhere near the White House).

Number of posts and cartoons: I don't know.

Where you can see it: Here at Claytoonz.com. Updates will also be made on Facebook, Twitter, and Instragram. Follow me on each platform. Links are on the right-hand side of this page.

How you can see it: Subscribe to claytoonz. There's a link on the right. Supposedly, you'll receive an email for each new post. You can stay on this page and refresh all night or you can watch one of my social media pages and hit refresh all night.

Time it will be over: I don't know.

Time Clay will lose his mind: Sometime between midnight and 6:00 a.m.

Should I bother Clay by sending him emails and direct messages while he's working? No. You should not do that but some people will do it anyway.

Can I comment on each post? Yes and please. All comments are welcomed and encouraged. I love hearing from you when I don't have to reply.

Can I curse? Yes. All curse words are welcomed and encouraged.

Will there be sandwiches? Yes but not for you.

When will Clay sleep? Never.

Tip Jar: if you want to support the live blog, please send a donation through PayPal to clayjonz@gmail.com. You can also snail it to P.O. Box 9103, Fredericksburg, VA 22403.

Jim shares his journey from making his mom laugh, his influences, as well as his origins in Indiana attempting stand-up comedy around the time his Ball State dorm-mate, was giving it a try… and went on to become one of the most legendary Late Night Hosts in America.

Jim explores his theory on how humor can heal and get us through tough times, as well as how he believes it won a Presidential election.

This session then takes a further deep dive into the power of humor, the mechanics of gags used in cartoons and comic strips, character-construction, personalities and relationships, the importance of the reader in the writing process, which days of the week to run your strongest and weakest gags, his team's writing process, the importance of what you don't see, the art of pantomime, using real-world names and events in a comic strip, transitioning comic strips into film and television and most importantly, what he thinks is funny. Quarantining Coronavirus through Comics at MSU's Comic Art Collection

by Mike Rhode

Like many of us, Michigan State University librarian Randy Scott was sent to work from home when covid-19 began shutting down schools and libraries across the country. To be able to work from home, he had to get creative, since he couldn't take parts of the Comic Art Collection home with him. Scott began clipping comic strips from the Lansing, MI papers that dealt with coronavirus and setting up new subject headings in the collection's Reading Room Index (RRI).

When I checked in with him, and heard that he was doing this, I began sending the daily Washington Post comics pages (I'd been sending the Sundays for years, continuing what crack comics historian Ian Gordon had begun years ago). He's picked coronavirus as his main subject heading, noting "The first mention of the coronavirus (covid 19) pandemic appeared in this collection in the February 13, 2020 episode of Prickly City. Newspaper strips are added here when 5 examples of a title with pandemic-related content are located, clipped and filed in the Library's collection." As of today, he's collected about 600 strips, 400 of which are in the RRI, and 200 waiting to be added.

Strips he's collected include:

New and newly significant related topics include:  A typical entry for a Washington, DC-based cartoonist looks like this:

Social Distancing.
"Boo Cat Lives and Breathes Social Distancing" (Reply All
   Lite, Apr. 26, 2020) / by Donna A. Lewis. -- Call no.:
   oversize PN6726.S79 Apr. 26, 2020

Special collections work over the long run and most of this collection probably won't be of interest to users for a few years, and then again after a few decades, most likely for the fiftieth anniversary of the pandemic. But just a cautionary note for those who think they can find everything on the web... this Chris Ware strip from the New York Times from April 26, 2020, has disappeared from the Times' website (and Randy would like a tearsheet if you have it).

SPX's 2020 Ignatz Submission Deadline EXTENSION

Hello friends!

Just sending out a quick reminder that the Ignatz submissions deadline has been extended to June 19, 2020. Some folks have asked, so to clarify, the books must have been published between June 1, 2019 and May 31, 2020 to be eligible. If you had planned on a book coming out during the period, but it was delayed, it would be eligible next year. Sorry, but otherwise everything will just get murkier and Davis knows we don't need more murkiness now.

To review the submission process is:

Fill out this form for each submission you are making, no matter what format or category

PLEASE NOTE - Filling out the form is the only submission point for online comics!!!!!

We are ONLY accepting PDFs this year for printed comics

To submit the PDFs for your mini-comics, comics, graphic novels and anthologies for the SPX 2020 Ignatz Awards:

  • Go to this shared public folder to drop PDFs of your comics. All you have to do is place your PDF in that folder, and we will get it to the Ignatz jurors

  • For submissions of ONLINE comics, please

  • We are ONLY accepting single-file PDFs of the comics - we cannot accept folders of files, or comics in other formats

  • Each file must be named with the following naming convention:

CreatorLastName.CreatorFirstName.Comic_Title.IssueNumber.Publisher.PubMonthPubYear.pdf

For example: Hanselmann.Simon.Bad_Gateway.Fantagraphics.July2019.pdf

If it is self published, put Self as the Publisher

  • For anthologies:

EditorLastName.EditorFirstName.Comic_Title..Publisher.PubMonthPubYear.pdf

For example: Newlavant.Hazel.Comics_for_Choice.Self.June2017.PDF

NOTE: If there are multiple editors, use only the first one listed on the title page.

  • Please do not assume we will figure out the creator's name, publisher, etc., as we simply won't have the time/person power

  • Submissions must have been published between June 1, 2019 and May 30, 2020, and the deadline for all submissions is June 19, 2020

  • We'd kindly ask you to hold one print copy of each title for inclusion in the Library of Congress small press collection - ideally you'll be able to simply drop a copy off at SPX, or we'll arrange to have it mailed to us hopefully sometime later this year depending on the circumstances.

Ok, that's it. Please let us know any questions you have, and thanks so much for making great art!!
