Thien and Rina have the huge honor of interviewing distinguished comic artist and writer, Dylan Horrocks, whose celebrated comics masterpiece, "Hicksville" has just been re-released with a beautiful new edition published by Drawn and Quarterly. In this episode, Dylan talks about his personal journey in comics-making since the first printing of "Hicksville", as well as his revealing experiences writing for mainstream comics, the decision to serialize his comics on the internet, and the inspiring comics scene in New Zealand.

We also chat with our lovely New Comics reporter, cartoonist and buddy Josh Frankel about new work by Lewis Trondheim, Oliver East, Matt Dembicki, as well as McSweeney's Panorama. We are really happy about this episode, and hope you will be too -- have a listen!

BASH! Magazine #2..."featuring new stories from D.C. artists in your monthly comic alternative"

I noticed issue #2 of BASH! Magazine was on the stands today at the Vienna Metro station (though not in the kiosk at Gallery Place yet!). Says the cover, "This month in Bash Magazine read about the strange fates awaiting those who dare take fake vacations, walk obsure forest paths, order frozen lobster, travel to Cuba, or ride the bus!" Matt Dembicki's sent along a note about his new comic book:

Just wanted to drop a quick note that Spadefoot, an 84-page graphic novel about a space frog and his merry band of misfits prophesized to conquer an evil emperor, a salamander named Hellbender, is available to read online for FREE at Wowio.com. (Type "Spadefoot" in the search function.) It's a whacky, good old-fashioned space opera! (If you want to download it, it's $4; that's something new with Wowio since it was recently bought by another company.)

If the comic hits a target number of visits, AlternaComics has agreed to publish a print version, which, of course, is any creator's goal. So, please check it out and, if you think it's good, please recommend friends to read it, too.

Matt Dembicki featured on Fairfax Library podcast

Matt just wrote in to say, "[Sam Clay,] the director of the Fairfax County Library System did a recent podcast interview wih me." Cool! Matt's been teaching cartooning classes in the system off and on, I believe. Here he talks about Mr. Big, the graphic novel about a snapping turtle he did with his wife. Matt revealed he's influenced by Wally Wood, Steve Bissette, Alan Moore, and Frank Miller. The link will take you to a whole page of interviews.

Comics in the Fairfax County Public Library system

I'm probably going to miss some of the entries they put in here, but I was flipping through the Fairfax County Public Library catalog of free events and other news tonight and noticed that a good number of branches have comics-oriented events. Pretty disappointed to see so few creator signings locally to coincide with this event (http://www.freecomicbookday.com/creator_signing.asp).

MATT: When you self-publish, you find you have the freedom to do your comic the way you want to do it. You’re your own editor.

CARLTON : I maintain a consulting practice on nuclear security and safety issues by day and create comics by night.

Mr. Big wins Day Prize

Matt Dembicki writes in to say, "-Mr. Big was named the 2007 Day Prize winner (Dave Sim called me to tell me). Carol and I will be exhibiting at the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo in Columbus, Ohio, this weekend, where we'll receive the award. Should be an all-around fun weekend!"

Congratulations Matt and Carol! Mr. Big is an all-ages story of a turtle for those who haven't seen it yet.

Chris Klimek has an article on northern Virginia's Matt Dembicki and his comic book, Mr. Big. It's not online, but it's "Serious Talk with Local Comics' 'Mr. Big'" Washington Examiner (November 24-25, 2007). Steal a copy off your neighbor's lawn, or look for the red boxes.

Oct 25: David Michaelis on Charles Schulz at Olsson's

David Michaelis will be discussing his new and controversial biography of Charles Schulz at the Olsson's on 418 7th St, NW at 7 pm. Bill Watterson highly recommended this and John Updike reviewed it as well. Unfortunately I'll be traveling to Ohio State for their comics symposium and will have to miss this.

SPX and DC's Matt Dembicki in the Examiner today UPDATED

The Examiner has a brief article on SPX today (now on the right, shhh) - Matt Dembicki of the local DC Conspiracy artists group is quoted in it. Matt's at SPX selling his Mr. Big, the story of a large turtle, which Matt says is all-ages appropriate.

Also, apparently yesterday's Post Weekend had a brief article, and on Thursday, Scott Rosenberg had a good size piece about Matt Wagner and SPX in the Express, with a lovely piece of art by Paul Horshenheiemer. He's got extras and he's roaming at SPX interviewing cartoonists with Chris Porter also of the Express.

I'll be there circa 1:30 on Saturday with Richard Thompson of the Post and Cul de Sac in tow.

Oct 12: Free evening with Richard Thompson

Matt Dembicki reports on spotting an event at the Writer's Center (Bethesda):

An evening with Washington Post cartoonist Richard Thompson (whose strip "Cul-de-Sac" appears in the Washington Post Magazine, and "Richard's Poor Almanac" in the Style section). Thompson, who is going into national syndication this month, will talk about how he finds and develops ideas and will share samples of work in process.

Matt Dembicki's samurai artwork

Matt wrote in to say, "The Meat and Potato Theatre (meatandpotato.org), a small, alternative theater in D.C., commissioned me to do an illustration to promote its fall presentation of 'Rashomon.' (They wanted a Frank Miller-like image with a good amount fo red stuff). I've attached the final approved image, which will appear on postcards, newspaper ads and, I hear, on the Metro, too.

I've also attached the initial illustration that landed me the gig. I kinda like it--it has a sense of apprehension about it, with the bandit lingering behind the samurai, just about to slash him."
