My renewed interest lead to discovering your posts about the magazine, which are great. It's been really fascinating to learn what happened to the magazine after I stopped reading it.

I don't remember exactly why, but I let my subscription lapse, never thinking about it much for years. Maybe it was because there was less and less Moebius stuff (my favorite artist in the magazine). I learned about HM as an avid National Lampoon reader, and I think you're absolutely right about the connection between their French Comics special issue and the launch of HM. They also did a special issue devoted to the cartoons of Claire Brétecher, FWIW.

Mark Simonson
Proprietor of Mark's Very Large National Lampoon Site
http://www.marksverylarge.comMark Simonsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05502203954575171730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34955617.post-71077632013410729572024-02-07T15:05:49.637-05:002024-02-07T15:05:49.637-05:00This is a HUGE loss!! Through my first partner, Gene Carpenter, I met Stuart, and his knowledge and enthusiasm for the medium was coupled with kindness and generosity of spirit that was magnetic. We attended Washington Nationals baseball games and comic conventions together, and his regular visits to the shop allowed for some deep (or at least long-winded) conversations on many topics, not always comics. I'm certain that he touched everyone he encountered, and I will miss him. --Joel PollackCinco de Mayohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05064216304455055858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34955617.post-79338589325511885462023-11-05T09:17:58.388-05:002023-11-05T09:17:58.388-05:00Mike--Thanks so much for your kind works on this b...Mike--Thanks so much for your kind works on this blog post--I love the "America's comic book librarian" moniker, even if I'm not sure I deserve such an accolade! :)
I have loved working with the comic book collection and setting up the workings of the collection--the division cataloger and I worked to better describe the collection soon after I became the Newspaper Section head and gained the comic book collection as a new duty. I've been fortunate to have many interns work with the comic books over the years and a wonderful staff, a staff that wanted to make sure as many people as possible could access the collection in the library catalog. The Library also supported the collection from the early 2000s on thru preservation efforts--new folders with a window for the mainstream comics specially designed for the Library, special attention to house unusual items such as 3-D SPX items and unusual but necessary elements of some mini-comics (matches, candy, wood).
Thanks so much for reporting on my retirement!
And thanks for your support over the years.
GeorgiaGahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00467551916334482768noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34955617.post-51170072947517290562023-07-19T10:59:01.576-04:002023-07-19T10:59:01.576-04:00The postcard is now in the Prints and Photographs ...The postcard is now in the Prints and Photographs collection of the Library of Congress which is looking to have the artist identified.Mike Rhodehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12600554018086949685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34955617.post-51998390894295319822023-05-15T21:31:41.641-04:002023-05-15T21:31:41.641-04:00This is an abomination. He used to frequent the now defunct CHUD forums to discuss movies, tv and comics. He'd post under his own name and would often recommend which British TV I should be watching, as he was something of an Anglophile.

I lost touch with him a while back and so this is sad news to read. He was always very friendly to me and seemed like a great guy. RIP Steve. When I started to work on my first published comic, Buzzboy, Joel not only gave me great advice on how to work with retailers and distributors, but he linked me up with my first inker, BP alum Steve Hauk.
