Unpublished Richard's Poor Almanack
Richard did a finger puppet of Dan Brown for last weekend that didn't run, but he put it on his blog. Also he notes that the new Cul de Sac book, collecting its second year, is out.

Where's Richard's Poor Alamanack?
A one-liner in today's Post says it will return. My guess is that Richard's swamped with his Cul de Sac strip and is trying to get ahead on that.

Richard's Poor Almanack previewed Free Comic Book Day for the 4th time

Thompson's Super-Size Me Finger Puppets
Here's some shots from Tuesday's Mardi Gras parade showing the life-size Richard Thompson Obama finger-puppet. I haven't checked my photos yet due to having a cold and feeling lazy.

Richard's Poor Almanack previews the inaugural parade
Yesterday's Richard's Poor Almanack previewed the inaugural parade. Now you can skip it and stay home and warm, or go to work and do something productive.

Thompson and Cavna - together like never again
Cavna at Comic Riffs has Our Man Thompson's deep reflections on Bush's departure - and hopefully that'll be the last time we see them reflect on Turdblossom's nom-de-guerre bestower.
And remember you can still buy Richard's drawing of FD Obamavelt on stuff too.

Richard Thompson's fanciful progenitor
Check out Richard's blog for a story of Virginia, Santa Claus and possibly how a thread of talent works through generations.

Have you seen us?
ComicsDC is on break for an extended weekend - we're off to Heroes Con. Well, Richard and I are. Randy T. may keep posting as we're off to Charlotte, NC. Stop by Richard's table if you want to find me. Or him actually.
By the way, I'll have a few copies of the Interplanetary Journal of Comic Art, and 3 copies of Film & TV Adaptations of Comics for sale (you can tell I didn't plan ahead when Richard asked me to come along) and a dummy of the Harvey Pekar: Conversations book. Richard will have his Richard's Poor Almanac book and original art for sale.

Our Man Thompson's blog
Richard's on a roll with a one and a two good beach cartoons and a great Stalin caricature that I immediately saved from the Post Magazine when it first appeared.
However, I'm guessing he should be working rather than blogging since we'll be off to Heroes Con next Thursday. For myself - I'm going to Synetic Theater's "Carmen."

Richard's Poor Almanack annual Free Comic Book Day cartoon
See it on his blog.
I was at Hole in the Wall books in Vienna, VA and they had it posted. I mentioned it and they started wondering how he could get the life of a comic book store owner so accurate in the last bit of the cartoon.

Speaking of Thompson...
...today's Richard's Poor Almanack is a slashing, biting attack on the comics page, or at least the people who put them together. Theoretically you'll be able to see it on the Post site eventually, but right now that link goes to last week's. This link might work in a few days.

Richard Thompson finger puppet
Today's puppet in the Post was McCain. I'm sure Richard will put it on his blog later this week. If you make it, hold it under some running water and see if it seems tortured.

Cartoonist Drew Litton likes Cul de Sac
Sports and editorial cartoonist Drew Litton of the Rocky Mountain News on his blog post "Dan O'Dowd Takes Aim," from Thursday, January 24, 2008, says,
I recently discovered the work of Richard Thompson, who just launched a new strip called Cul De Sac. You can see it in the News everyday. I love seeing the work of cartoonists I'm unfamiliar with. I did a search in Amazon and found this treasure trove [Richard's Poor Almanac] of cartoons from the feature that Thompson draws for the Washington Post. Absolutely fantastic work.

Quick bits from weekend's Post UPDATED
In Saturday's paper, our man Thompson's got a Romney finger puppet (but not at this link!), this week's Style Invitational contest (note the Bob Staake Opus) is in response to Berkeley Breathed using old ones in Opus, and there's a letter complaining about inaccuracies in Flashbacks.
Sunday's paper recommends Trondheim's Little Nothings in the Source section which is not online. In the comics, Lio shows what really happened to Calvin and Hobbes, and there's a major Satrapi and Persepolis article in Style. Finally, there's a wire service obit for the founder of the East Village Other Newspaper which provided jobs for many early underground cartoonists which is not online, so here's a link to the LA Times article.

Christmas decorating with Richard's Poor Almanack
Saturday's Post had another fun 'do-it-yourself' panel by Richard Thompson. So I cut out the Christmas Curmudgeons and decorated my computer at work.(click on picture for larger version and for extra credit, find Michael Kahn lurking in the background)
The panel didn't come with a manger or anything so I had to make my own tree. Richard discussed the genesis of the panel on his blog - read the comments.
I think he should sponsor a contest for the best decorating scheme.

Color Cul de Sac two-fer
The Post had two magazines this week, one a special for Thanksgiving, and they both had Richard Thompson's Cul de Sac in them. The Thanksgiving one, which can be seen on Richard's blog, probably wasn't syndicated so it's a Washington special. Except that it's on the web so everyone can enjoy it. Kind of takes the fun out, doesn't it?
This barely qualifies as Secret History of Comics except when Fantagraphics tries to put together the complete CdS in 2072...
...tune in tomorrow for a REAL SHoC (hmmm, not a half-bad acronym).

Today's Richard's Poor Almanack
Isn't online yet, but it's another finger puppet. Whoo-hoo! In the meantime, enjoy last week's Peanuts parody.

Another finger puppet!!!!
SPX meant I couldn't get this mentioned on Saturday, but Richard Thompson caricatured Hilary Clinton as a finger puppet this week. I've made it and she's glaring at my house guests now.
