A Dental Tech's Scribbles: The Collection of Bill Baltezar

A Dental Tech's Scribbles: The Collection of Bill Baltezar
Andre Sobocinski
The Grog - Vol 6 Number 2 - Spring 2011
Recently, the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Library and Archives accessioned a collection of artwork by a Navy dental technician named William "Bill" Baltezar (1924-2009). Before enlisting in the Navy, Baltezar was a trained artist; and through service on active duty (1943-1946) and in the reserves (1946-1953), he never stopped exercising his talent or need to present the daily life of an enlisted sailor through sketch and scribble. This collection consists of letters to his mother while at boot camp and later Hospital Corps School in San Diego, CA (1944), 26 pages of sketches drawn aboard Patrol Cruiser Escort-851 (1945-46), and illustrated envelopes that once enclosed love letters to his future wife, Dorothea. Dorothea Baltezar recalled of her husband, "he illustrated every envelope of every letter he ever sent—I kept all that he sent me over a two-year courtship." After leaving the Navy, Baltezar worked as an artist in Salinas, CA, where, in addition
to earning a reputation for his art work, Baltezar was a popular character in the community known for his fanciful stories, and performances in local community theater productions. In 2010, the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, CA, posthumously honored Baltezar with an exhibit of his watercolors entitled "When Ya Gonna Give Me a Damn Show?"

Hospital Corps Do’s and Don’t’s: The Posters of Coleman Anderson

Hospital Corps Do's and Don't's: The Posters of Coleman Anderson
Andre Sobocinski
The Grog, 6:1, Winter 2011

During World War II, artists stationed at the Naval Medical School at Bethesda, MD, produced thousands of posters, and illustrations used to train and educate Navy sailors and Marines. It may seem odd, but several of these artists served in the rating of pharmacist's mate. The following series of posters was drawn in 1945 by such a corpsmen. Before and after his brief tenure as a corpsman-illustrator in World War II, PhM2c Coleman Anderson made a name for himself as a cartoonist with the "Chester Gould Gang" in Chicago, IL. He drew more than his fair share of Prunefaces, Flattops, Gravel Gerties, and helped develop many fangled quandaries for detective Dick Tracy to fight out of long before developing the "Hospital Corps Do's and Don't's" series for the WAVES Hospital Corps School in Bethesda in 1945.

"The Gibson Girl's America: Drawings by Charles Dana Gibson"
Opens at Library of Congress on March 30

WHAT:
"The Gibson Girl's America," a Library of Congress exhibition of 24 works, primarily drawings, that highlight the rise of the Gibson Girl from the 1890s through the first two decades of the 20th century.  It also illuminates how women's increasing presence in the public sphere contributed to the social fabric of turn-of-the-20th-century America.

The items on display trace the arc of the artist's career.  Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) came of age when women's roles were expanding and social mobility was increasing.

WHEN:
Saturday, March 30, through Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013.  Free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

WHERE:
The Graphic Arts Galleries on the ground level of the Library's Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C.

Opens at Library of Congress on March 30

WHAT:
A 10-cartoon exhibition featuring the work of Herbert Block (Herblock), the award-winning editorial cartoonist for The Washington Post, during 1963.

Topics addressed include the "March on Washington" and the Civil Rights Movement, and the presidency of John F. Kennedy, who faced repeated opposition to legislative initiatives—the nuclear test ban treaty with the Soviet Union, tax cuts to reduce economic stagnation, efforts to increase resources for schoolchildren and protection of the wilderness.

WHEN:
Saturday, March 30, through Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.  Free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

WHERE:
