Literacy prof Katie Monnin likes District Comics... a lot

"Edited by Matt Dembicki, District Comics is already one of my all-time favorite graphic novels. Whether or not you read it in 2012, or plan to read it in 2013, it will most likely end up on your "favorites" list as well."

March 2: Vitriol signing in Annapolis

http://www.conventionscene.com/2013/02/05/md-vitriol-signing/

Vitriol3ecArtist Billy Martin and writer Brent Allen sign at Third Eye Comics on Saturday, March 2, 2013 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm!

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

Join us as we host the exciting launch of a brand new series from IDW Publishing, with our VITRIOL THE HUNTER launch event!

This exciting new series is a must for fans of HELLBOY, BPRD, JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, and BALTIMORE: THE PLAGUE SHIPS.

Drawing on folklore and old monster myths prevalent in today's society, shaping them into a story that's one part classic horror film, and one part futuristic fantasy; imagine Hammer Studios's Horror of Dracula by way of Blade Runner.

A self-proclaimed vigilante, Vitriol leads a mission to cleanse his homeland of the malicious monsters that have overtaken it, led by a brutal vampire with some tyrannical inclinations.

Set in the city of Basilika in the year 2127, Vitriol the Hunter chronicles Vitriol's encounters with werewolves, hordes of hellions, and other walking myths.

Co-created, and featuring the artwork of GOOD CHARLOTTE's Billy Martin, and written by Brent Allen, VITRIOL THE HUNTER is set to be one of the breakout hits of the Spring, and we're honored to be the official launch spot for the book this March!

Our buddy Bernard examines Wertham's cold remains

Local comics historian Warren Bernard (friend of ComicsDC, SPX grand poobah) volunteers at the Library of Congress' prints and photos division, identifying editorial cartoons and topics for them, but he snuck over to the building next door to research and write an article on Fredric Wertham's anti-comics crusade for the Comics Journal #302. Warren's kindly convinced the journal to put his research material online.

Whodunit - Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
Saturday, February 9, 2013, 7:30pm - 10:00pm at 5710 Baltimore Ave. Hyattsville, MD 20781
Artists included in this show will either show an original from their own collection in their own style or imitate another artist's style... or maybe both! The viewers exploring the works in the show will embark on a treasure hunt as they try to determine if a piece was done by the original artist or someone else. If the piece is a copy — then who did the copy?
Update: David Hagen will be there as well.

Comic Riffs on live cartooning events

AN OPEN REQUEST: As convention season kicks off, bring on more live cartoon performance
 By Michael Cavna
Washington Post Comic Riffs blog February 1 2013

There's a link to watch the hour-long literary death match of which Cavna says, "The Cartoon Death Match pitted such political cartoonists as [Mike Peters,] Mark Fiore, Jen Sorensen and Keith Knight in spontaneous drills at the drawing board — with comics/publishing figures Dean Haspiel, The Beat's Heidi MacDonald and The Post's Gene Weingarten serving as judges. The scene played like a mix of great anecdote-sharing and quick wits between bouts between world-class Pictionary artists."  I was there, and enjoyed it a lot.
