UPCOMING July 4 - Big Planet Comics 26th Anniversary Sale

In 1986, Big Planet Comics was born, so come celebrate 26 years with us on the 4th of July when we do our annual sale! All stores!

Since the 4th falls in the middle of the week this year, we may do even shorter hours than our normal holiday schedule, but we will let you know!

___________________

Siegfried 1 HC

by Alex Alice

The epic story of Siegfried comes to amazing life under the direction of Alex Alice, who manages to add a Disney-like flavor with the cartoony style of the Nibelung dwarves, and gorgeously lush art as Siegfried is prepared by the gods for his destiny to fight a massive dragon! Plus the book includes a huge section on the research behind the story and the preparation to turn it into an animated film. Amazing!

Spider-Men #1 (of 5)

by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli

What's cooler than the Amazing Spider-Man? A team-up with the great new Ultimate Spider-Man! Peter Parker is pulled into the Ultimate Universe, for the first crossover ever between the mainstream Marvel Universe! Peter finds himself in a world where he was killed and Miles Morales is the new Spider-Man! A great start!

Bad Medicine #1

by Nunzio DeFillipis, Christina Weir and Christopher Mitten

An ongoing series of strange science fiction experiments, with the first case running over 2 issues. A body is found with an invisible head! The disgraced (and possibly crazy) scientist who first worked on creating invisibility is called in to work with the U.S. government, as the possibility of an invisible murderer grows!

Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #1 (of 4)

by Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner

The second Before Watchmen series is also written by Cooke but art by the awesome Conner! Silk Spectre tries to raise her daughter to follow in her footsteps even as she is affected by her mother's choices while trying to survive high school and have a normal life - even though she is training to be a superhero too!

The Massive #1

by Brian Wood and Kristian Donaldson

After the Earth's ecology shifts terribly, drowning coasts and ravaging international travel, one last eco-warrior ship travels the sea, searching for their companions lost on the giant freighter The Massive, while dodging pirates and slowly running out of fuel. A compelling adventure set in a vibrantly dangerous vision of near scifi future of ecological collapse with great art.

Planetoid #1

by Ken Garing

A space pirate crashlands on a strange alien world where technological monsters rampage through the wreckage of a fallen civilization. Silas must use all of his resources to survive and find out why his ship crashed, and perhaps find a way to escape. Great gritty art and adventure!

Spider-Man: The Graphic Novels HC

by Susan Putney, Gerry Conway, Charless Vess, Stan Lee, Bernie Wrightson, Alex Saviuk and Ross Andru

Some of the best Spider-Man graphic novels of the 1980s and 1990s are finally collected into an oversized hardcover! An amazing adventure in Scotland by Charles Vess, a trippy voyage to a magical realm, the history of Peter Parker and Mary Jane before they met and after, and fighting Nazis with Silver Sable! A great selection.

X-Men #30

by Brian Wood and David Lopez

The X-Men add another great book to their roster as Brian Wood takes over the writing duties and Storm leads her team on a mission without reporting a lot of secret details to Cyclops! Lopez's art makes this another winner.

Koma SC

by Pierre Wazem and Frédérik Peeters

This amazing new story is about 2 chimney sweeps, a little girl who keeps passing out, and her dad. When she finds a strange underworld beneath the city where monsters tend machines that dictate the health of each human, they get caught up in a government conspiracy and fast-paced adventure! Luckily she makes friends with the monster who tends her machine. Touching and compelling, a great, great read!

Angelman HC

by Nicolas Mahler

A new hero is on the scene! Mahler's send up/parody/homage to superhero comics follows the trials of Angelman, the sexually ambiguous superhero who is constantly remade by the publisher Korporate Comics in a futile attempt to make him more popular. Each page is a different gag strip that slowly builds up the story of his career and life.

Paris SC

by Erika Raven, Peter Moerenhout, and Maarten Vande Wiele

A young wanna-be model moves from the countryside into Paris and quickly gets caught up in the high stakes world of glamor and showbiz with her new friends who are an aspiring singer and a girl who just wants to be rich and famous at any cost! Insane drama and twists make this a exciting soap opera for all three characters.

Extermination #1

by Simon Spurrier and Jeffrey Edwards

A superhero and his archvillain are forced to work together after an alien invasion devastates the Earth! Nox and the supergenius Red Reaper try to fight off the aliens that are hunting them, mixed with flashbacks to their showdowns before the invasion occured.

Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1

by Darwyn Cooke

The first of the seven Before Watchmen series is an all-Darwyn Cooke affair, as he tells the story of Hollis Mason (the first Nite Owl) writing his autobiography, Under the Hood, about the world's first superhero team, the Minutemen! He tells the origin of each hero on the team, within a framework of finishing the first draft of his book. Amazing art as usual!

Moon Knight 1 SC

by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev

Moon Knight relaunches (again) in this new series. Marc Spector's schizophrenia manifests as 3 new teammates that only he can see - Captain America, Spider-Man, and Wolverine! With their conflicting advice in his head, can he take on a new supervillain in Los Angeles who is after the power of Ultron? A fantastic new adventure!

Ed the Happy Clown HC

by Chester Brown

One of Chester Brown's first breakout stories was serialized in his Yummy Fur anthology, the surreal tale of Ed the Happy Clown! Finally back in print after years, this bizarre adventure follows Ed through a mix of crime, religious and political condemnation.

The Activity 1 SC

by Nathan Edmondson and Mitch Gerads

A new secret special operations group is formed to clean up the messes the CIA makes and can't fix, to fill in the gaps that Delta Force can't handle, and taking out targets with cutting edge tech and the strictest secrecy. A mix of the Bourne Identity and special forces action by the writer of Dancer and Who Is Jake Ellis?

Truitt on Dark Avengers

"Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women" opens in Washington DC

From: Sarah Lightman

"Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women", the show I am co-curating, is continuing to tour.

"Graphic Details" will be opening at the Anne Loeb Bronfman Gallery, Washington JCC, 1529 16th Street NW, Washington DC 20036
from  7 June, until 2 September 2012.

Featuring original work by 18 of the most influential creators, Graphic Details showcases work of all- stars from the pioneering Wimmen's Comix and Twisted Sisters artists of the 1970s and 1980s to the superstars of the new generation. Many of the cartoons in Graphic Details have never been displayed in public until now. The artists, who hail from the U.S., Canada, Israel and the UK include: Vanessa Davis; Bernice Eisenstein; Sarah Glidden; Miriam Katin; Aline Kominsky-Crumb; Miss Lasko-Gross; Sarah Lazarovic; Miriam Libicki; Sarah Lightman; Diane Noomin; Corinne Pearlman; Trina Robbins; Racheli Rotner; Sharon Rudahl; Laurie Sandell; Ariel Schrag; Lauren Weinstein; and Ilana Zeffren.

This well-reviewed and often-startling exhibition provides the first in-depth look at a vibrant and prolific niche of graphic storytelling – Jewish women's autobiographical comics. While the influential role of Jews in cartooning has long been acknowledged, the role of Jewish women in shaping the medium is still largely unexplored. This exhibition of original drawings, full comic books and graphic novels presents the powerful work of artists whose intimate and complex work has influenced the world of comics over the last four decades.

Sophisticated yet raw, nakedly diaristic storytelling is what makes these comics so compelling. By turns funny, outrageous, poignant and embarrassingly intimate, the works reflect each artist's individual journeys refracted through a distinctively Jewish lens in a pop-culture art form. Some bare their bodies. Some expose their psyches. All are fearless about experiences, emotions, desires, romance and politics. For a taste of the works on display you can see a series of short films featuring the uproarious performances and commentaries by Sarah Glidden, Miriam Katin, Miss Lasko-Gross, Laurie Sandell, Ariel Schrag, and Lauren Weinstein created by Zachary Levine, Curator at Yeshiva University Museum, here:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC21866CEEBBB5B99

Graphic Details has been touring since 2010. Previous sites include The Cartoon Art Museum, San Francisco (2010), The Gladstone Hotel with The Koffler Centre for The Arts, Toronto (2011), and most recently Yeshiva University Museum, New York (2011-12) where we held a one day conference "Talking About Jewish Women and Comics."

Rex Zombie Killer value stamps

I picked up a second copy of Washington, DC-area comics writer Rob Anderson's Rex Zombie Killer #1 at a convention last weekend, and on the letters page were these two faux 1970s value stamps like Marvel did in their comic books.

KAL Cartooning at The Baltimore Sun

From: kevin Kallaugher

Recently The Baltimore Sun celebrated its 175th anniversary. The newspaper asked me to create a cartoon reflecting on that achievement. I choose to create something that celebrated the proud tradition of editorial cartooning at The Sun over the decades. Despite the odds, I am hoping the tradition carries on for another 100 years. You can see the cartoon here:

Remember Tom the Dancing Bug from the Wash Post?

If you fondly remember Reuben Bolling's strip Tom the Dancing Bug from the Wash Post's Weekend section (back when it was part of the reason to read that section) you can directly subscribe to suport the strip. Putting my money where my mouth is, I did so over the weekend.

One slim week left for Team Cul de Sac art auction

You can buy original art from great cartoonists and illustrators and raise funds for Team Cul de Sac's Parkinsons disease campaign at http://comics.ha.com/common/auction/catalog.php?SaleNo=510

As enthusiastically recommended by editorial cartoonist Steve Artley
