Decorating my office with original art

For a short time, I've got an office at work. I've started framing some of the original comic art that I've gotten, and putting it up.  Buying this type of art is a good way to support cartoonists you like, of course.



The great Rob Ullman, who illustrated the sex column for the Washington City Paper for years, did the above. As a spot illustration, this doesn't have a title, but I call it "Coffee I.V." He's got a new minicomic for sale.

Donald Duck in Navy medicine

I was filing some material at work today, and ran across this image of Donald Duck.

There's two other uses of the same image in the book that can be seen on the Flickr site. The caption for this one is:

Polite Dissent - a blog on comics and medicine

I can't believe I haven't run across this before - Polite Dissent - a blog on comics and medicine, but no, I hadn't until Bert Hansen pointed it out today. And "Scott"'s been doing this since 2004 with 1738 posts on comics! I need to dip in more obviously, especially if I'm going to keep talking about Comics and Cancer (next at American Association for the History of Medicine, Rochester, MN, late April - be there).

My friend Bert's excellent book, Picturing Medical Progress from Pasteur to Polio (Rutgers University Press), is winning an award at the Popular Culture Association meeting - see Baruch Historian Bert Hansen Honored for Book on Medicine and Popular Culture.

This has been all over the place, but the Post picked it up so here you go - the country that gave us Thomas the Tank Engine and whatever those airplanes with faces on PBS were called is carrying anthropomorphism into new realms - "British DVD Takes Aim At Autism: Cartoons Focus on Facial Expressions," Rachel Saslow, Washington Post Tuesday, March 31, 2009; HE04.

I liked the editorial cartoons, but the photographs of medical school dissections probably get more viewers.
