Mark Fiore's GU appearance
Given that this event was sponsored by the Journalism department, I'm a little surprised this article isn't credited - Pulitzer Prize-Winning Cartoonist Satires Politics (October 28, 2010). Fiore was a good speaker, and showed about 5 of his cartoons.

Mark Fiore interviewed by Comics Riffs
Michael Cavna got an interview with Mark Fiore up before his talk at Georgetown University tonight. I attended the talk and enjoyed it. I'll try to post some highlights tomorrow before Fiore attends the Cartoons & Cocktails auction, where as you'd expect, if you attend you can bid on editorial cartoons. Mark's also got some DVD collections of his animation for sale, if you ask him.

That darn Toles! (continued)
Witches are your neighbors and acquaintances
Washington Post Saturday, September 25, 2010; A11
What is a witch? The Tea Party's Senate candidate in Delaware, Christine O'Donnell, said that she dabbled in witchcraft. Post columnist Richard Cohen ["Republicans, bewitched," op-ed, Sept. 21] and cartoonist Tom Toles [Sept. 21] commented on it. I wonder if either knows what a witch is? Is it the Hollywood version from "Snow White" or "The Wizard of Oz?" If not, then what?
A witch could be standing in line behind you at the checkout counter or sitting next to you on the Metro. And he or she probably does not cackle or have a wart on her nose or carry a broom. There are several thousand of them in America. They are hard to tell from Episcopalians or anyone else.
If The Post is going to write about them, perhaps you should invite one or two to talk to your staff to provide some background and answer questions.

By DAVE ITZKOFF
Harvey Pekar, the obsessive chronicler of everyday lives, was collaborating at the end of his life on a Web project whose fate in print remains uncertain.
Paul Conrad, Cartoonist, Dies at 86
By ROBERT D. McFADDEN
Mr. Conrad’s editorial cartoons in The Los Angeles Times and other papers slashed presidents, skewered pomposity and exposed what he saw as injustice for six decades.
And Rutu Modan illustrated the review of Skippy Dies in the Book Review.

Daryl Cagle vs the Intelligence Community's copyright scofflaws
I mentioned a Washington Post story about a General who used a Daryl Cagle cartoon in his briefing. Cagle takes offense at editorializes, "The Director of National Intelligence Steals and Alters My Cartoon? What the Hell?" which seems to be a bit over the top, as do the comments. Remember that post on copyright a couple of days ago?

Washington Blade returns while Times fades
The Washington Blade, the gay paper, returned to the stands last week after a several months absence. The paper's name and assets were bought by its former staffers who had been publishing as the DC Agenda. None of the political cartoons or comic strips the Blade had previously published have returned as of the first issue.
Meanwhile, the Washington Times has confirmed that it is for sale. The Times dropped all of its comics months ago.

U of MD's Diamondback's editorial cartoon controversy
University of Maryland's Dimaondback's April 13 Editorial cartoon By Jenna Brager
The above cartoon is causing a controversy apparently - at least enough of one that the Diamondback's editor felt compelled to apologize - but with a twist:
What I do apologize for, however, is for failing the cartoonist. If you’ve been around the backlash from the cartoon, odds are you already know that the drawing of the armband made many readers interpret the cartoon as a connection between Israelis and Nazis — the imagery of the Israeli flag armband is often found in highly anti-Semitic propaganda.
She hadn’t meant to make such a connection, and so a tiny part of a drawing sparked a plethora of letters, feedback and more than a hundred comments online. I knew the cartoon would spark debate, but where I failed in my job was not realizing the connotation of the armband. Instead of constructive conversation, all anyone wants to talk about now is how this comparison can be interpreted as hate speech. And so, I failed my cartoonist, who never intended to make that statement.
You can read the rest of his editorial here: From the editor: All apologies By Rob Gindes, April 18, 2010, but this looks like another tiresome tempest in a teapot to me, largely caused by a lack of drawing chops (sorry Ms. Brager).
