OT: Book talk and signing by Dane Kennedy on Monday
My friend, the historian Dane Kennedy will talk about his book The Last Blank Spaces: Exploring Africa and Australia, on Monday at noon, in the Mumford Room of the Library of Congress. He used materials from P&P, G&M, and General Collections in his research. Following is from press release--
"… Kennedy surveyed dozens of expeditions into Africa and Australia in the 19th century, nothing that these journeys adopted a mode of scientific investigation that had been developed by previous generations of seaborne explorers. They viewed the two continents as "vast uninhabited oceans," empty spaces that could be made truly knowable only by mapping, measuring, observing and preserving. They found, however, that their survival and success depended less on this system of universal knowledge than it did on the local knowledge possessed by indigenous peoples…"

Civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis provides a vivid account of his lifelong struggle for civil rights in his new comic book-style memoir "March," the first in a trilogy of graphic novels the congressman is writing about his remarkable personal history.
Rooted in Lewis's personal story, "March" reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement.
Lewis was inspired early in his life by the activism surrounding the Montgomery bus boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In those pivotal moments, he made a decision to become a part of the civil rights movement.
As a young man, Lewis participated in sit-ins, Freedom Ride protests, led the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and was a keynote speaker at the March on Washington in 1963. He was elected to Congress in 1986, representing Georgia's 5th Congressional District.
"March" co-author Andrew Aydin will also discuss his involvement with the book.
A book signing will follow the event.

FIVE FANTASTIC CARTOON ILLUSTRATORS! exhibit pictures
Steve Conley's Adventure Time comic covers.I stopped in to the opening for the exhibit (details at the bottom) and got some shots of the gallery, curator Britt Conley and cartoonists Steve Conley and Kevin Rechin. Marty Baumann is in one shot, and I had put my camera away before Matt Wuerker got there. Nick Galifianakis is traveling, but had a lot of cartoons representing him.
