Cool New Comics

We've just gotten in a batch of The Cartoon Picayune, a comic published in Washington DC by editor Josh Kramer that is dedicated to real life journalist reporting, from Vermont high school ski jump teams to the politician behind rebuilding Beirut after the civil war. Plus we just got the first issue of a weekly kids comic from the UK, The Phoenix! The first issue is available at our Vienna store now for $4.99 and it is action-packed, colorful, and just plain ol' awesome! We will have new issues every week from now on.

If there are any cool comics out there that we don't have, let us know! We are always on the lookout for great new comics to carry.

Feel free to forward on our newsletter, and please send us any comments or mailing list requests to vienna@bigplanetcomics.com

Thanks!

But I Really Wanted to Be An Anthopologist... HC

by Margaux Motin

Chicklit comes back to comics with Margaux Motin's funny look at being a mother, an artist, a wife, and trying to survive life in Paris! In the vein of Naughty Bits, Motin's excellent cartooning tells her stories in 1 to 3 page strips, with a great vernacular translation.

Kal Cartoon news from Romania

From: Kevin Kallaugher

Friends and colleagues

I wanted to share with you some recent news I hope you might find of interest.

I have just returned from a very interesting "Cartoon Diplomacy" tour of Romania. It included an exhibition of my work at the National Museum of Contemporary arts as well as lectures to High School and university students, journalists and citizens. We had a great deal of media coverage including a nice piece in Agence France Presse which has had international pick-up.  I include it below.

There is also a video of my opening remarks at the exhibition here:

Also, an exhibition of my cartoons which originally shown in St Petersburg, Russia is now on tour.  It will be opening soon in Kaliningrad, Russia.

Closer to home, here in Baltimore I enjoyed an interesting discovery. A former mayor of Baltimore disclosed recently that a cartoon I penned 20 years ago was responsible for a change in  a city policy. You can read the story here:

March 2013 marks my 35th year with The Economist. To celebrate I am preparing major retrospective book which will be available within the year.

I will keep you posted.

Best

June 1: John Fantucchio in Art On The Edge

From: Mary Fantucchio:

John G. Fantucchio will have three paintings on display in Alexandria at the Del Ray Artisans Gallery.   We'd like to invite you to the opening reception - food and drinks will be served.   Come and meet John on Friday, June 1, 7 - 10.  The title of the show is 'Art On the Edge.'  It's an all experimental art exhibit.  His stuff may look like something you'd find hanging in the lounge on the Starship Enterprise - but sorry, no comic book artwork.  The address is 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA, 22301-1124.  Their phone number is 703-838-4827.

For those joining us late, John is a comics fanzine artist of the 1960s who turned to fine art and teaching.

Silver Spring firm estimates cost of Avengers damage; go watch Miyazaki instead

The Silver Spring-based KINETIC ANALYSIS CORPORATION has provided a "Chitauri Invasion of New York City: Post Event Damage Estimate" for the Avengers movie. It's not pretty. Everyone's insurance rates are going up!*

Judging from their address, KAC must be right across the street from NOAH, so you can get your hurricane prediction and insurance loss estimate in one easy visit, and still probably have time to catch a Studio Ghibli movie during the AFI festival which runs another month.

I'll have 22 whimsical paintings on display at this year's Artomatic.

I'm nestled on the 8th Floor (8 is gr8) in space #256 (not that there are numbers up or anything). The best way to find it once you step off the elevator is to  make a left at the water fountain and then it's the first room on the right.  Look for the Invisible Man!

The Singles"Back in her single days - before she met the man of her dreams - Beth "Bee" Evans hated being forced to attend weddings solo. Determined to spare her friends the same humiliation, she invites everyone on her list with a guest. Much to her chagrin, however, Hannah, Vicki, Rob, Joe, and Nancy insist upon attending Bee's lavish Chesapeake Bay nuptials alone. The frustrated bride dubs them the "The Singles" and their collective decision wreaks unintended havoc on her otherwise perfectly planned wedding weekend."

Free Comic Book Day was major success for Big Planet Comics

101_3639
Ghostbusters at Big Planet Comics Vienna for Free Comic Book Day

In their recent podcast (#44), Jared Smith, one of the chain's owners said, "Of the four Big Planet stores, almost all of us ran out of almost every book we had. We certainly got more people than we expected, based on our ordering numbers, and College Park and Vienna both had their best sales days ever. So it wasn't just like we gave away a lot of free stuff - we sold a huge amount of stuff to people."
According to Joel Pollack, Big Planet Bethesda had a line of people waiting when the store opened at 11 am, and the line wrapped through the store for over an hour. By mid-afternoon, he was out of free comics.
