New book: Biographical Sketches of Cartoonists & Illustrators in Library of Congress

I've known Sara Duke since the early 1990s, and have always been impressed with her scholarship and breadth of knowledge. At some point, when I was complaining to her about the lack of a cartoonist biographical dictionary, such as had been done in the UK, she replied that she had a draft of one that had never been published. Terry Echter had begun the project, and Sara took it over in 1993 and completed it by 1995 when the Swann Collection became publicly available (although no additions were made to the collection after 1983). She was kind enough to forward a copy to me, as it is in the public domain.  I have edited and updated it slightly, but this volume remains overwhelmingly the 1995 version that Sara wrote.

Now available at cost: http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/biographical-sketches-of-cartoonists-illustrators-in-the-swann-collection-of-the-library-of-congress/18846113 (print) or http://www.lulu.com/product/ebook/biographical-sketches-of-cartoonists-illustrators-in-the-swann-collection-of-the-library-of-congress/18864437 (pdf) or a free download at https://archive.org/details/DukeBioSketchesOfCartoonistsInSwannCollAtLOC

Biographical Sketches of Cartoonists & Illustrators in the Swann Collection of the Library of Congress
by Sara Duke, 340 pages

Inside this book are short biographical sketches about the many artists represented in the Library of Congress' Swann Collection compiled by Erwin Swann (1906-1973). In the early 1960s, Swann, a New York advertising executive started collecting original cartoon drawings of artistic and humorous interest. Included in the collection are political prints and drawings, satires, caricatures, cartoon strips and panels, and periodical illustrations by more than 500 artists, most of whom are American. The 2,085 items range from 1780-1977, with the bulk falling between 1890-1970. The Collection includes 1,922 drawings, 124 prints, 14 paintings, 13 animation cels, 9 collages, 1 album, 1 photographic print, and 1 scrapbook.

UPDATED 2/22/2017: A new printing has been uploaded with a correction - deleting TE Coles and adding in CE Toles.  You can print out the following and insert it in your first printing -

Tonight: Apocalyptoon 2012 opening party

APOCALYPTOON 2012

In Partnership with Art Soiree

THU JAN 26 - SUN JAN 29
$25 ticketed opening party on Jan 26 / On view for free Jan 27-29
Terrace Gallery

Ticketed opening party: Thu Jan 26 / 6pm / $25

Against the backdrop of a region steeped in politics and with a touch of art, style and humor, Art Soiree will unveil what 2012 will bring by presenting a unique pop-up exhibition that takes a humorous outlook on the year to come and features works, some created exclusively for this exhibition, by renowned editorial and political cartoonists. ApocalypToon 2012 features works, some of which were created exclusively for this exhibition, by cartoonists such as Kal of The Economist, Tom Toles of The Washington Post, Jeff Danziger (Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post), Daryl Cagle of MSNBC, Matt Wuerker of Politico, Damien Glez (La Monde, Courrier International, La Gazette) and Dan Piraro of Bizzaro. These simple pen stroke political cartoons foreshadow the future, poke fun at the past and imply hidden motives in ways that elude written or spoken reporting. The result of this creative license is a unique perspective on the future—entertaining, clever and insightful.

ApocolypToon kicks off with a $25 ticketed opening party on Thursday, January 26 at 6pm where guests can mingle with exhibiting cartoonists and enjoy complimentary food, live music and a cash bar. The pop-up exhibition in Artisphere's Terrace Gallery is free and open to the public from Friday, January 27 to Sunday, January 29.

Continuing with the zany nature of the cartoons, the ticketed party on January 26 celebrates the opening of the exhibit with live music from local journo-band Suspicious Package, comprised of reporters armed with their musical talent and rock star looks. The contents of the Suspicious Package are: Pulitzer Prize-winning Editorial Cartoonist at The Washington Post Tom Toles, Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Dr. Christina Sevilla, Deputy Assistant Secretary of HUD Bryan Greene, former TIME/Bloomberg correspondent and journalist Tim Berger and Director of Education and Outreach for the National Security Journalism Initiative at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Josh Meyer.

The opening party will also feature the sounds of DJ Neekola, international DC-based female DJ and producer, who will perform along with live percussionist Kamajian. In addition, the party includes a special guest performance by DJ Manifesto, an all-time DC favorite who both DJs and plays violin during his sets.

ApocalypToon 2012 is part of Notasphere, a month of programming created by local artistic collaborators. From a pop-up restaurant and political cartoons to Brazilian beats, Artisphere will be filled with fresh, thought-provoking off-beat arts events presented by creative partners from across the DC-region throughout January 2012.

OT: Brian Biggs' college strips

My buddy Brian Biggs has moved into children's books (like many another cartoonist these days), but he's coughing up his old college comic strip onto the web starting this month. He sent me a note about it, writing "In January 1987 the first strip was published in what became a daily comic for my university newspaper. It was called Roommates. I was a first year student, and at the time it seemed like the thing to do. I decided upon the 25th anniversary of this thing to republish the entire run on my blog, starting today."

Check it out at:

Feb 15: Marc Tyler Nobleman author talk 7 p.m., Washington DC

(I really liked his Siegel and Shuster biography, Boys of Steel, illo'd by Ross Macdonald)

From Marc Tyler Nobleman:
Once a month they hold a luncheon for members only at which a member or guest speaks. Now the Children's Book Guild of Washington DC is beginning to hold evening events and making those talks open to the public; in fact, mine will be the first, and you are hereby invited.

The talk is free and will last about an hour including Q&A. It's a behind-the-scenes look at my work, including the most startling discoveries I've made during book research, a few risks I've taken as the industry gets more cautious, and how I have been accused of self-plagiarism...twice.

Members will arrive at 6:30 for some opening guild business; I'm supposed to go on by 7 p.m., but to be on the safe side, I'd suggest arriving by 6:45.

I'm told there is street parking and a garage under the nearby Best Buy/Container Store.

PR: Pearls Before Swine iPad app- contest ends Friday

Pearls runs in both the Post and the Express, and I believe it's one of the more popular strips in the area, so here's some PR about a contest for you Apple-zombies...

When it launched earlier this month, Only the Pearls the iPad app based on the popular Pearls Before Swine comic strip, debuted as the #7th most popular paid entertainment app in the iTunes store. It has since received rave reviews.

I wanted to call your attention to the search & find contest that author Stephan Pastis is currently holding. Respondents that correctly answer some questions about the app will be entered into a drawing. One winner will have his/her name appear in a future Pearls Before Swine strip. A great treat for a Pearls fan! The contest ends this Friday, January 27.
