Arlington's head librarian Diane Kresh profiled in WaPo

This Arlington librarian is pushing back against book bans

Jan 5: Upcoming exhibition at Dwightmess Comics & Cartooning gallery in Silver Spring

Upcoming Illustration Exhibition, "Devour Hour" Features Bizarre Drawings & Paintings of Corcoran Graduate Nami Oshiro ::::

We are proud to announce our first exhibition of 2024, "Devour Hour," a selection of color paintings and black & white ink drawings by emerging Washington, D.C. area-based artist Nami Oshiro!

In her art, Oshiro uses storytelling informed by her Ryukyan background and her upbringing in California and Florida as a Jehovah's Witness to craft ambiguous, unsettling narratives with a doomsday tinge. Additionally, these lyrical and sometimes humorous narratives are given voice through her self-published comics, which meditate on her family heritage and relationship to Japanese culture as an Okinawan.

Oshiro earned her Bachelor's of Fine Art from the Corcoran College of Art + Design in 2012, and has exhibited her work in the region widely, including Foundry Gallery (DC), Workhorse Arts Center (VA), Rhizome DC, Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery (DC), and Art Enables (DC). She was awarded an Arts Bank Grant by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in 2023 and also teaches comics.

Additional Info: Copies of Oshiro's minicomics "Mama's Epilogue" & "Fart Stories" will be for sale during the exhibition.

Beyond Comics really, really wants subscribers to buy the books they ordered

They sent this message out to their entire email list today. I don't actually subscribe from them though.  While I'm pointing out their use of a blast email to everyone,  this is a serious problem for small businesses like comic book stores that operate on thin margins. If you've ordered it, pay for it and don't ghost your store.

Please Catch-up on your Subscriptions at Beyond Comics!

A Message for Our Delinquent Subscribers!

It is the end of another amazing year here at Beyond Comics.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support for our small business, and as always, we greatly appreciate your patronage and friendship.

However, as often happens, some of our customers end up falling behind in their subscription purchases. This year we are utilizing all our available contact methods to make sure everyone has had the opportunity to catch up on their subscriptions, so they do not miss the comics they wanted.

For those of you who fell behind, please make the time to visit our store to catch up on the comics we have ordered and held for you prior to the end of the year as we will be doing a major purge of delinquent subs at that point.

If you are unable to make it into the store, you may pay for your comics online (with the login info you were provided when you signed up) at:

https://customer.comichub.com/

If for any reason you are not able to make it in, please contact us directly.

Frederick: (301) 668-8202

Gaithersburg: (301) 216-0007

If you are one of the majority of our customers who is caught up then please disregard this message.

Thank you,

Beyond Comics

Hannah Good to edit comics pages & Daily Cartoonist adds to WaPo buyout news

Michael Cavna tells me that Hannah Good is staying at the Post and will be taking over David Betancourt's comics page editing duties. She's been good for the WaPo's cartoon journalism this past year, so I'm very glad she's staying.

Here's her Post page info:

Headshot of Hannah Good

Hannah Good

Washington, D.C.

Education: Western Kentucky University, BA in English

Hannah Good is a Designer curating comics journalism and illustrated reporting with teams around the newsroom. She's also an illustrator and comic artist who has worked with HarperCollins Publishers, Apple TV+, Barnes and Noble and the BLINK art festival. Previously, she was an Opportunity Fellow on the Next Generation Audience Development team focused on comics and a social producer and comics editor for The Lily. Before joining The Post, she was a social media producer at Washingtonian Magazine. She's a proud graduate of Western Kentucky University, where she was editor-in-chief of the Talisman magazine.

In the meantime, DD Degg has dug deeper into the WaPo's latest "shrinking to greatness" moment so I don't have to.

But for the record, of the Style and Metro staff, my current tally of departures is: Cavna, Betancourt, exhibit reviewer Marc Fisher, media reporter Paul Farhi, theater critic Peter Marks and Metro's John Kelly and Courtland Milloy. Editors Jeff Leen, Sydney Trent and Lynda Robinson are going. Hank Stuever is staying as an editor for Style. As I've noted to a few people, owner Jeff Bezos could literally pay everyone in America to write for the paper without really noticing.

Updated: My friend Lisa's colleague Ann Maloney is also leaving the Food section.

WaPo loses all writers about comics as Cavna and Betancourt depart

Michael Cavna just confirmed to me that both he and David Betancourt are taking the Post buyout offer, and there will be no specialists on comics on the staff now.

Here's their staff bio pages before they disappear.

Michael Cavna

Washington, D.C.

Covering visual culture and storytelling: comedy/satire, graphic and comic art/illustration and animation.

Education: University of California, San Diego, Literature/Writing

Writer-artist-recovering-syndicated-cartoonist Michael Cavna is a man of many hyphenates. His articles on visual artists and comic art/illustration have been honored by the Sigma Delta Chi Awards, the National Headliner Awards and the international Harvey Awards. Cavna is creator of The Post's Comic Riffs online column, which has twice been named the best newspaper blog in the country by the Society for Features Journalism. A San Francisco native and University of California at San Diego graduate, Cavna wrote the main text for the Eisner Award-nominated anthology book "Team Cul de Sac: Cartoonists Draw the Line at Parkinson's." Cavna's "Wise Up" cartoon launched the viral #Draw4Atena campaign in 2015 on behalf of jailed Iranian artist Atena Farghadani. He is also emcee and co-programmer of the Library of Congress/National Book Festival's Graphic Novel Pavilion. "Peanuts" creator Charles M. Schulz once told Cavna at a black-tie awards dinner: "You do funny things"; to this day, he does not know for sure whether Schulz was referring to Cavna's syndicated comic "Warped" (Andrews McMeel) or to his tragically askew cummerbund.

Honors and Awards: National Headliner Award, writing/illustration, 2017, 2019 & 2021 ; Ink Bottle Award, Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, 2023; Eisner Award finalist, journalism, 2016, 2017, 2020 & 2021; Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi Award, audio/visual storytelling, 2018; Society for Features Journalism awards, Arts/feature coverage and commentary, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2021; Harvey Awards finalist, biography/journalism, 2012

Professional Affiliations: Society for Features Journalism, National Society of Newspaper Columnists

Books by Michael Cavna:

"Team Cul de Sac: Cartoonists Draw the Line at Parkinson's" (text)

Headshot of David Betancourt

David Betancourt

Washington, D.C.

Reporter focusing on comic book culture

Education: Radford University, BA in media studies

David Betancourt writes about all aspects of comic book culture for The Washington Post's Comic Riffs blog.
Honors and Awards: Two-time Eisner Award nominee

Languages spoken in addition to English: Spanish

More to Come (as a 'competitor' says, on a day when I haven't driven 600 miles)

Marvel opens 2nd 'What If...?' season with episode in almost entirely Mohawk language

Marvel opens 2nd 'What If...?' season with episode in almost entirely Mohawk language

Season Two of Marvel's animated series What If...? introduces us to Kahhori, a Mohawk woman who goes on a quest to discover her power. The episode takes place almost entirely in the Mohawk language.

Comics Research Bibliography 2022 E-book Edition

Mike Rhode; John A. Lent; Tony R. Rose

It's a free download. * marks entries or articles that are new since 2022’s published version – 2,262 of them. The derivation hasn't quite finished but it should be done before the night is over.

I expect to update this to version 1.1 with updating a list of the people who died in 2023 when DD Degg and the animation sites produce their lists and I can compare them to the one included in this.

Many thanks go this year to new volunteer Tony Rose who's formatted thousands of citations. So many that I still have 34 more pages of them to start off 2024's edition with.
