The Graphic Novel Bookgroup is the newest public bookgroup at Politics and Prose. We read, you guessed it, graphic novels! But what is a graphic novel? Isn't it just a comic book? Cartoons? Superhero in tights and capes? Occasionally, but not always. There are as wide a range of graphic novels as there are literary genres. The one commonality is that they all involve stories told with the aid of pictures - sequential storytelling. Obviously, this definition does not limit the content, and, if you were to browse several graphic novels, you'd find striking variety: memoir, journalism, literary fiction, humor, experimental, abstract, underground comix, sketchbook/journaling, superhero, mainstream, manga, manwha, the list goes on. Like any form of art, graphic novelsoften push the limits in terms of content and methodology—engaging the reader/viewer in the act of creating and communicating the story.
That's all to say that the Graphic Novel Bookgroup is interested in all of the above. From the popular and lauded to the obscure, we try to read and discuss books which offer enough of a substantial story to encourage discussion, disagreement, and criticism. We focus as much on the story (narrative and dialogue) as we do on the art (drawing style and layout of the frames). The group is composed of young and old, male and female, those who've spent their lives immersed in the genre and others who've only read a few. Excellent graphic works are becoming increasingly available—thanks to a growing readership and reviewers who are willing to praise this expanding field—so come and join us, and read our recommendations at www.politics-prose.com/graphic-novels.

The EOD Warrior Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the EOD community by providing assistance to active-duty wounded, injured or ill EOD warriors, wounded EOD veterans and families of our fallen EOD warriors.
EOD stands for Explosive Ordnance Disposal, relating to the disarming and disposal of bombs. On the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, bombs known as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are responsible for the majority of injuries and fatalities. EOD Technicians are considered to have one of the most dangerous occupations in the military and willingly put themselves in harm's way to protect the lives of others.

Baltimore Comic-Con Offers Interactive Kids' Comics Hotspot with cartoonists, comic creation, capes, and light saber training!
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - August 9, 2013 - Kids 10 and under get in free at the Baltimore Comic-Con September 7-8, 2013 at the Baltimore Convention Center -- and show organizers are once again presenting a kid-friendly comics area, full of all-ages comics, as well as the artists and writers who make them. Creators from such companies as Archie, Scholastic, Disney, Simon & Schuster, Marvel, and DC will be on hand to sketch, say hi, and help to teach young ones about the magic of comics through mini-How-To's through the weekend, right at the Kids Comics Pavilion! Plus, kids can take part in comic crafts, a Jedi Knight light saber training session, and more!

Long time SPXer and creator behind the kid's series The Knights of the Lunch Table,Frank Cammuso, has collaborated with famed underground cartoonist and creator of Nard N' PatJay Lynch on the children's book Otto's Backwards Day. Their book is being published by children's book publisher Toon Books, which will make its first appearance in the SPX exhibitor room at this year's show. Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons.
