UPCOMING - November 10 NEW DATE - Ben Hatke signing

PLEASE NOTE: This signing has been changed to a new date of Saturday, November 10! Sorry for any inconvenience!

Ben Hatke, creator of the all-ages bestseller science fiction adventure Zita the Spacegirl, will be appearing at both our Vienna and College Park stores on Saturday, November 10, for his new sequel Legends of Zita the Spacegirl!

Zita is determined to find her way home to earth, following the events of the first book. But things are never simple, and certainly never easy, in space. Zita's exploits from her first adventure have made her an intergalactic megastar! But she's about to find out that fame doesn't come without a price. And who can you trust when your true self is being eclipsed by your public persona, and you've got a robot doppelganger wreaking havoc . . . while wearing your face? Still, if anyone can find their way through this intractible mess of mistaken identity and alien invaders, it's the indomitable Zita, in Legends of Zita the Spacegirl.

Deadpool #1

by Brian Posehn, Gerry Duggan and Tony Moore

When a necromancer starts bringing the US Presidents back to life as zombies, you can't have Captain America be seen decapitating Truman! Time to hire the wisecrackin' merc Deadpool! Yeah, that'll end well! A funny and pun-filled new adventure!

Blacklung HC

by Chris Wright

An astounding and brutal tale of pirates and a lettered man shangaied among, with unexpected turns of savagery and insanity. Compelling and awful, all at the same time, anchored by Wright's cartoony style and flights of surreal fantasy covering religious themes and hallucinations. Unique and amazing!

Iron Man #1

by Kieron Gillen and Greg Land

Tony Stark has to deal with more terrorists who have found his Extremis technology and avenge the death of an old friend. Good thing he can go in disguise by shaving his goatee!

Freelancers #1

by Ian Brill, Joshua Covey, Mike Gagnon and Felipe Smith

Another $1 intro issue, the Freelancers are orphan girls trained in kung fu who work for the most elite patrons! Plus an astounding back up story with art by Smith about their time in the kung fu orphanage!

47 Ronin #1 (of 5)

by Mike Richardson and Stan Sakai

A historical retelling of the tale of the 47 masterless samurai who must suffer in order to fulfill their duty to their former lord and achieve revenge! Great research by Sakai as usual, and a dynamic set up of the corrupt Japanese feudal period!

Shadowman #1

by Justin Jordan and Patrick Zircher

When the first Shadowman disappears battling the forces of supernatural evil 20 years ago, his only son is raised in ignorance of his heritage. But when he discovers his parents may have been murderers, he throws away his father's magical amulet, setting the evil on his own trail again. And amazing art by Zircher as always!

Storm Dogs #1

by David Hine and Doug Braithwaite

A hard scifi adventure, when miners start disappearing on an alien world, a special team of tough investigators is sent to investigate, and deal with two alien races, deadly rains, ferals animals, and local intrigue. A great start with cool characters and tech!

Spaceman HC

by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso

If you didn't listen to us before, now you can get the complete saga all in one deluxe book! Genetically engineered apeman astronauts get caught up in the kidnapping of a celebrity kid, mixed with flashbacks to their time on another world! Amazing action and scifi concepts!

DC Collaborative Selected to Be Beneficiary of AnimeUSA Auction

Nov. 6, 2012

(Washington, DC)- The DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative was selected by AnimeUSA benefit from their auction to be held November 11 at 1 pm at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. AnimeUSA will be holding their convention for the first time in Washington DC.

What:                   AnimeUSA Convention Auction

Where:                Marriott Wardman, 2660 WoodleyRoad, NW  Washington, DC 20008
When:                  Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, 1 p.m.

AnimeUSA began in 1999 as a northern Virginia convention started by Anime fans.  By 2004, it had grown into a non-profit educational organization with the mission to promote and educate the public about Japanese arts and popular culture.  True to its beginnings, the organization remains a convention of fans, by fans, and for fans, however it expands its community outreach by selecting a nonprofit organization to benefit from the annual auction held at their conventions.

"We're very pleased to be selected as the organization benefitting from the AnimeUSA auction this year, particularly as this is the first year that AnimeUSA comes to Washington DC," said Louise Kennelly, Executive Director of the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative.

AnimeUSA wanted to contribute to a local DC charity, specifically one that benefits children through a focus on arts and education.   "We share with the DC Collaborative an appreciation of the importance of imagination and creativity. The DC Collaborative mission to ensure access to arts and humanities for all DC public school students captures the spirit of our convention," said said Danielle Pomfrey, Charity Auction Coordinator for AnimeUSA.

The AnimeUSA convention takes place at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park on the weekend of November 9th-11th.  The auction will be hosted on the Sunday afternoon of the convention.  In previous years, auction proceed recipients have included the Taylor Anderson Memorial Foundation, Child's Play, and the Suicide Prevention Hotline.

About the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative

The DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative (DC Collaborative) provides equitable access to quality arts and humanities education for all DC public and chartered public schools. Working with its partners, since its founding in 1998, the DC Collaborative produces such exemplary programs as Arts for Every Student, sending about 30,000 students each year to member events.

About AnimeUSA                                                                                                                                                    AnimeUSA is a non-profit educational organization dedicating to raising awareness and educating the public about Japanese arts and popular culture.  AnimeUSA is a convention of fans, by fans, and for fans.

Mark Tatulli at Hooray for Books!

101_4576

Mark Tatulli cartoonist of 'Heart of the City' and 'Lio' spoke, drew and took questions for an hour tonight at Hooray for Books! in Alexandria, VA. I took some photos that I've put online. I'll try to get some of his more memorable quotes up here soon, because he's an entertaining speaker.

A Rake's Progress, or Richard Thompson: Cyborg Cartoonist

Nick Galifianakis was with Richard Thompson today (November 5 2012) as the electricity began to flow:
Hello, everyone. Well, here's another (rare) divergence from my usual postings:

I'm in the room with Richard Thompson at what is the first of several sessions to calibrate and then fine-tune the electrodes in his brain.

To quote a friend: "I had no idea they could fine tune the stimulation. I figured they threw a switch, and dialed a knob back if they started to smell meat cooking."

They're right now sending varied electricity into his brain putting him though a variety of tests and movements, big and very, very small, as well as constantly repeating the phrases that make me think I'm actually in the play "My Fair Lady."

The process is quite nuanced and requires tremendous patience to achieve the right balance (Richard has never complained, not once)

Too much juice here or not enough there, might fix the targeted area but it also may mean it negatively affects another area - at this moment, Richard no longer trembles in his right hand - but he's suddenly fluent in Korean. Only Korean.

(I'm kidding...do I really have to write that?)

Truly remarkable to watch, again, a very, very refined process. My friend's patience and good-naturdeness during the session is extraordinary as each switching on and off of a section and each re-calibration instantly brings a new physicality, increased or diminished, and even a new emotional state, up or down. This will take a while to get right - it's the ultimate borrowing from Peter to pay Paul situation.

Oops, gotta go..., I'll have more later. Right now I want to watch Richard finish his needlepoint...while figure skating.

11/5: Martk Tatulli in Alexandria

Monday 11/5, 7:00-8:00 p.m. --Cartoonist Mark Tatulli

Award-winning, internationally-syndicated cartoonist Mark Tatulli, creator of the comics Lio and Heart of the City will visit the store. His newest collection, Lio: There's a Monster in my Socks, is compiled especially for younger readers! The world of Lio is filled with the extraordinary - monsters under the bed, wild reptile pets, robot inventions, weird science - but it's all commonplace for this most uncommon kid. Lio explores the twisted realm of a kid's imagination - at once bizarre, creepy and fun. Email us to reserve a copy or to let us know you're coming. Ages 6 and up.
