Washington Post December 16 2023

The Dec. 9 "Mutts." (Patrick McDonnell/.)

In a world sadly deficient in happy endings these days, I thank "Mutts" creator Patrick McDonnell for giving us a much-needed one in the panels of his beloved strip, with the long-suffering Guard Dog finally winning his freedom and being adopted into a new and caring forever home.

I have particularly had a rough time lately with some tragic events in my life, and even though the comic involves a fictitious character, I find myself looking forward to each new day's strip. It's just the little pick-me-up and tonic I need at this time.

War comics in LOC's serials exhibit case

Library of Congress's serials division houses the comic book collection, and they usually have a small exhibit case right inside the entrance where people come for their library cards. This month's is on war and Christmas and there are two comic books in the case along with other publications. One is a Sgt Rock comic, and the other is the Dogs of War graphic novel.

The lovely new animated film The Boy and the Heron is the first film in 10 years from visionary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro). The heron in question is part-heron, part-man who serves as a guide for a boy as they navigate a realm somewhere between life and death. Roll Call's RJ Matson's Year in Review

I don't pay as much attention to the Capitol Hill newspaper as I should.  For example, is it even still a newspaper?

Uncorrected Proofs in comics libraries? Keep or toss?

This question came up in the librarian section of the Comics Studies Society.

I argued in favor of keeping them as the art is frequently in an unfinished state, and can be thumbnails, pencils, or uncolored.

Here is an example of a proof, or Advance Reader Copy, of Trashed by Derf with an added editor's note and marketing information that may not be available anywhere else. It's from my own collection that I happen to run across recently, so I decided to take a few pictures to bolster my argument, and then thought I'd share them here as well.

I'd call this part of the Secret History of Comics.

My apologies for the so-so photos.
