IDEAS DON'T BLEED episode sixty-five | Phillip Kennedy Johnson, part one

IDEAS DON'T BLEED episode sixty-five | Phillip Kennedy Johnson, part one
-Matthew Rosenberg
December 11 2023

This week, we're joined by Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Action Comics / Alien) as we discuss his comics origins, his background in music, taking over The Incredible Hulk at Marvel Comics, and more!

IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, the Supple Boiz, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books!

Our theme song is "Where's the Poison" by Summer People.

Enjoy!

Hello again.

We're back with another installment of our little podcast about comic books, the Army, and Big Band music. I will admit, up until now we've done a bad job of discussing those last two things regularly, but we're fixing that today. The always wonderful Phillip Kennedy Johnson has joined us.

This is a fun one that goes lots of interesting places. Also this is the first episode I remember taping where I really finished it and kicked myself for not going deeper on a ton of the stuff we talked about, which I think is a testament to how much I enjoyed this chat and how much it got me thinking. Now you can give it a listen, see if you agree with me, and go pick up some of Phillip's great SUPERMAN and HULK comics

That darn Dana Summers

(Dana Summers)

Fact-checking is alimentary [Dana Summers letter]

Anne Cahill, Fairfax

Washington Post December 9 2023

As someone who adores political cartoons, I was very disappointed in Dana Summers's Thanksgiving Day editorial cartoon. The cartoon is factually incorrect.

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, the cost of a classic turkey dinner with all the fixings was down 4.5 percent from last year. This information was published Nov. 15 by the federation and was widely available. Summers did not do his due diligence.

Readers expect newspapers to present factually correct information. Factual integrity matters, and this cartoon didn't make the grade.

It's a Sunday comic section, and she has a second part on her lap. I can't make out what the strip she's reading is though. Any thoughts?

My friend, the Portuguese comics historian Leonardo de Sa, identified it, "I believe that's "Out Our Way." It should be the November 30, 1941 Sunday. Here it is, as published the following day in The Tacoma Times:" https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn88085187/1941-12-01/ed-1/seq-14/

As you can see from the the page, it's from when it had transitioned into being "The Willets."

WaPo reviews Miyazaki

'The Boy and the Heron': A masterpiece for most, middling for Miyazaki: The Japanese master of animation Hayao Miyazaki comes out of retirement (again) with another magical, otherworldly tale [in print as Another day at the officer for Miyazaki]
