Juliet Milagros Palante just earned the internship of her dreams, and is leaving the Bronx for Portland, Oregon to work for her favorite feminist writer. The night before she leaves, she decides to come out to her family—something she never planned on doing. Unfortunately, it doesn't go well. Her only hope is that Harlowe Brisbane, a feminist savant, expert on women's bodies and queer culture, will help her figure out how to be an out and proud Latinx lesbian. But Brisbane is white, she's not from the Bronx, and she doesn't actually have all the answers. In a story bursting with queer kinship, summer flings and unabashed examinations of race and identity, Juliet learns what it means to come out—to friends, to family, and to herself. Ages 15 and up.

Finck, a cartoonist and illustrator equally at home on Instagram and in the pages of The New Yorker, follows her acclaimed graphic memoir, Passing for Human, with this wide-ranging collection of more than 500 drawings and cartoons. Representing the best of her published work from the last few years along with brand-new pieces, the book is divided into chapters including Love & Dating, Gender & Other Politics, Animals, and Strangeness, Shyness, Sadness. Moving, funny, and always relatable, Finck's unfussy graphics explore big questions like identity, otherness, and creativity as well as everyday annoyances.

Finck will be in conversation with Malaka Gharib, founder of the food zine The Runcible Spoon and co-founder of the D.C. Art Book Fair.

The Biden Train kept a-rollin', all night long. As DNC frontrunner 
(cough) Sen. Joe Biden was defending the rank-ass "legacy" of his 
ex-boss and forgetting what he was saying halfway through his answers 
on the "debate" stage this week, the featured body part malfunction 
was the Senator's dentures, which slipped out on the air at the worst 
possible moment — which is to say, pretty much every moment, from all 
accounts.

Not to be denied, however, the Washington Post splattered their front 
page with this big ol' slab of gaslighting, Emperor's New Clothes 
raving and drooling by columnist Dan Balz — Balz being, I assume, what 
you'd have to have a whole lot of to cough up this thing onto the 
front of a major daily paper with your name on it.

"Biden's time to shine..."?
HIS GODDAMN TEETH FELL OUT ON LIVE TV, F'CRISSAKE.
Dear god, somebody tie me to a railroad track.

...y'know, you can say what you want about George Washington — that he 
was a slaveowner, a colonizer, all true — but you have the give the 
Father Of Our Country credit for at least one thing: he would never, 
EVER have allowed his teeth to fall out on TV.

Nancy to replace Knight Life in Sunday Post

Keith Knight has cancelled his daily strip, The Knight Life, in favor of working on a television adaptation of his life. The last strip, which only ran on Sunday in the Post, had a header saying the Post would replace it with Nancy.

Knight was actually in the area this past weekend, attending SPX. Unfortunately I didn't see the news in time to ask him about it. The strip was a favorite of mine, and I was annoyed that the Post didn't run it daily.

The International Comic Arts Forum invites proposals for scholarly presentations for its twenty-first meeting, to be held at the Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda, Maryland from September 12-13, 2020. Scholars who present at ICAF will have the opportunity, as part of their registration fee, to enjoy SPX exhibitors, artist talks, and the Ignatz Awards ceremony. ICAF will be co-located with SPX at the Marriott North Bethesda Hotel & Conference Center, which will also provide accommodations to attendees at a reduced rate. Our keynote speaker for the 2020 conference will be Martha H. Kennedy, Library of Congress curator and author of Drawn to Purpose: American Women Illustrators and Cartoonists.

ICAF welcomes original proposals from diverse disciplines and theoretical perspectives on any aspect of comics or cartooning. We particularly welcome proposals of presentations that reflect an international perspective. Studies of aesthetics, production, distribution, and/or reception, as well as analysis of social, ideological, and/or historical significance are equally welcome, as are studies that address larger theoretical issues linked to comics or cartooning. Given the shared histories and missions of ICAF and SPX, two events that have long celebrated diversity, inclusion, and independence in the comics world, we hope to offer thematic panels on small press, independent, and self-published comics of all genres. We also hope to highlight the work of women and non-binary cartoonists; submissions in these areas are encouraged, though not required. 

PROPOSAL GUIDELINES: ICAF prefers argumentative, thesis-driven presentations that are clearly linked to larger critical, artistic, or cultural issues; we avoid those that are survey-like in character. We accept original 20-minute presentations that have not been presented or accepted for publication elsewhere. Presenters can assume an audience versed in comics and the fundamentals of comics studies. Proposals should not exceed 300 words.

All proposals will be subject to blind review. Applicants can expect to receive notice of their proposal's standing by April 10, 2020 (acceptance, rejection, or wait-listing).

As far as I could tell, SPX was a success again this year, although that varies for individual cartoonists of course. Raina Telgemeier brought in a big crowd of youngsters, but I didn't see a lot of them walking the aisles after waiting on line for her. Actually I never saw her either.
