'Botanivore' at Telegraph
OT: Book talk and signing by Dane Kennedy on Monday
"… Kennedy surveyed dozens of expeditions into Africa and Australia in the 19th century, nothing that these journeys adopted a mode of scientific investigation that had been developed by previous generations of seaborne explorers. They viewed the two continents as "vast uninhabited oceans," empty spaces that could be made truly knowable only by mapping, measuring, observing and preserving. They found, however, that their survival and success depended less on this system of universal knowledge than it did on the local knowledge possessed by indigenous peoples…"

Sept 18: Rep. Lewis and 'March' at Newseum
Members Only: "Civil Rights Superhero: A Special Evening With John Lewis"
"March: Book One"
Date: Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 7:15 PM
Location: Knight Conference Center
Note: The program will be streamed lived.
Civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis provides a vivid account of his lifelong struggle for civil rights in his new comic book-style memoir "March," the first in a trilogy of graphic novels the congressman is writing about his remarkable personal history.
Rooted in Lewis's personal story, "March" reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement.
Lewis was inspired early in his life by the activism surrounding the Montgomery bus boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In those pivotal moments, he made a decision to become a part of the civil rights movement.
As a young man, Lewis participated in sit-ins, Freedom Ride protests, led the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and was a keynote speaker at the March on Washington in 1963. He was elected to Congress in 1986, representing Georgia's 5th Congressional District.
"March" co-author Andrew Aydin will also discuss his involvement with the book.
A book signing will follow the event.
For seating, members must RSVP to membership@newseum.org by Sept. 16.
Would you like priority seating at this and other Newseum programs? Become a Press Pass member today! (Priority seating is also subject to availability.)

In this sequel to Zita the Spacegirl, Zita faces the perils of being a
famous space hero. Ben Hatke once again combines whimsical and lovely
drawings with a great sense of humor. Although I purchasedLegends of
Zita the Spacegirl (First Second, 2012) for my daughter, I think that
I've re-read it nearly as many times as she has. For more information,
check out E.C. Myers' rave review of the series.
In this podcast, Hatke discusses his training as an artist, the
origins and development of the Zita series, and provides fascinating
information into how he conceptualizes and produces all-ages graphic
novels.

FIVE FANTASTIC CARTOON ILLUSTRATORS! exhibit pictures
I stopped in to the opening for the exhibit (details at the bottom) and got some shots of the gallery, curator Britt Conley and cartoonists Steve Conley and Kevin Rechin. Marty Baumann is in one shot, and I had put my camera away before Matt Wuerker got there. Nick Galifianakis is traveling, but had a lot of cartoons representing him.
Kevin Rechin.
Marty Baumann's work.
Matt Wuerker's work.
This is mostly an introductory show and all the art is reproductions. The students were enjoying it, and asking a lot of questions of the cartoonists.

The Economist Writes about satire and cartoons, says KAL
Some weeks ago when in London, I had a conversation about the current
state of cartooning and political satire around the world with one of
my colleagues at The Economist Alexandra Suich. Our chat ignited a
creative spark in Alexandra's mind. The result is this fine article in
this week's magazine.
http://www.economist.com/news/international/21584335-making-fun-leaders-pleasure-enjoyed-ever-more-people-satirical-verses
I lent whatever expertise I could to the article... it quotes Bro
Russell and gives a shout out to Matt Bors.
There is also an additional piece talking about cartoons specifically here:

Finally... there is a great video made by The Economist interviewing
