I'm on the road today so Michael O'Connell Wrote a blurb for me about his sweet story.
Richard A. Bauman was a Coast Guard rear admiral who loved the Steve Canyon comic strip by Milton Caniff. Not only did he collect every daily strip for 41 years, he corresponded with Caniff and received several pieces of personalized artwork from the artist. One drawing even found Bauman while he was stationed in Saigon during the Vietnam War.
For the last seven years, Northern Virginia journalist Michael O'Connell has been researching Bauman and his collection, talking to Bauman's family and digging through the archives at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at The Ohio State University. The results of his research reveal a four-decades long love story between Bauman and his wife Dorothy and an unlikely connection with Air Force officer and comic strip hero, Steve Canyon. You can read that story today via The Comics Journal.
