OT: Book talk and signing by Dane Kennedy on Monday

My friend, the historian Dane Kennedy will talk about his book The Last Blank Spaces: Exploring Africa and Australia, on Monday at noon, in the Mumford Room of the Library of Congress. He used materials from P&P, G&M, and General Collections in his research.  Following is from press release--

"… Kennedy surveyed dozens of expeditions into Africa and Australia in the 19th century, nothing that these journeys adopted a mode of scientific investigation that had been developed by previous generations of seaborne explorers. They viewed the two continents as "vast uninhabited oceans," empty spaces that could be made truly knowable only by mapping, measuring, observing and preserving. They found, however, that their survival and success depended less on this system of universal knowledge than it did on the local knowledge possessed by indigenous peoples…"

Sept 18: Rep. Lewis and 'March' at Newseum

Members Only: "Civil Rights Superhero: A Special Evening With John Lewis"

Rep. John Lewis

"March: Book One"

Guest: Rep. John Lewis
Date: Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 7:15 PM
Location: Knight Conference Center
Note: The program will be streamed lived.

Civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis provides a vivid account of his lifelong struggle for civil rights in his new comic book-style memoir "March," the first in a trilogy of graphic novels the congressman is writing about his remarkable personal history.

Rooted in Lewis's personal story, "March" reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement.

Lewis was inspired early in his life by the activism surrounding the Montgomery bus boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In those pivotal moments, he made a decision to become a part of the civil rights movement.

As a young man, Lewis participated in sit-ins, Freedom Ride protests, led the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and was a keynote speaker at the March on Washington in 1963. He was elected to Congress in 1986, representing Georgia's 5th Congressional District.

"March" co-author Andrew Aydin will also discuss his involvement with the book.

A book signing will follow the event.

For seating, members must RSVP to membership@newseum.org by Sept. 16.

Honest Tea to Sponsor the Harvey Awards

Seth Goldman BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - September 4, 2013 -Baltimore Comic-Con is pleased to welcome Honest Tea co-founder Seth Goldman for his only comics event appearance of the year as he talks about his new book, Mission in a Bottle: The Honest Guide to Doing Business Differently-and Succeeding. Co-written by Barry Nalebuff and drawn by Sungyoon Choi (American Widow), Mission in a Bottle tells the story of how two guys attempted to launch a mission-driven business that offered a healthier tea, taking it from brewing tea in their spare time to a multi-million dollar business sold in more than 100,000 outlets worldwide. It's both an innovative non-fiction comic and a funny, insightful business book.

Mission in a Bottle

Goldman will appear Sunday morning at 11 am in Room 305 to talk about the making of the book, the uses of nonfiction comics, and secrets of entrepreneurship in a panel moderated by The Beat and Publishers Weekly's Heidi MacDonald.

Goldman was profiled this week in the Washington Post, to discuss his many charitable activities and plans to start a business that offers healthier food. A resident of Bethesda, MD, Goldman is also the co-founder of Bethesda Green, a local sustainability initiative in Honest Tea's hometown. Bethesda Green has installed dozens of recycling bins in Bethesda, helped create a program for restaurants to convert their grease waste into biodiesel, and created Maryland's first green business incubator.

Mission in a Bottle was published this week by Crown Publishing and is available in bookstores everywhere.

Today all Honest Tea varieties are organic and Fair Trade certified. The company continues to be recognized for its mission-driven leadership, commitment to transparency, and unconventional marketing techniques.

Good Ben Hatke podcast interview

BEN HATKE
 Legends of Zita the Spacegirl

In this sequel to Zita the Spacegirl, Zita faces the perils of being a
famous space hero. Ben Hatke once again combines whimsical and lovely
drawings with a great sense of humor. Although I purchasedLegends of
Zita the Spacegirl (First Second, 2012) for my daughter, I think that
I've re-read it nearly as many times as she has. For more information,
check out E.C. Myers' rave review of the series.

In this podcast, Hatke discusses his training as an artist, the
origins and development of the Zita series, and provides fascinating
information into how he conceptualizes and produces all-ages graphic
novels.

FIVE FANTASTIC CARTOON ILLUSTRATORS! exhibit pictures

101_6291Steve Conley's Adventure Time comic covers.

I stopped in to the opening for the exhibit (details at the bottom) and got some shots of the gallery, curator Britt Conley and cartoonists Steve Conley and Kevin Rechin. Marty Baumann is in one shot, and I had put my camera away before Matt Wuerker got there. Nick Galifianakis is traveling, but had a lot of cartoons representing him.

The Economist Writes about satire and cartoons, says KAL

FRom KAL:

Some weeks ago when in London, I had a conversation about the current
state of cartooning and political satire around the world with one of
my colleagues at The Economist Alexandra Suich. Our chat ignited a
creative spark in Alexandra's mind. The result is this fine article in
this week's magazine.

http://www.economist.com/news/international/21584335-making-fun-leaders-pleasure-enjoyed-ever-more-people-satirical-verses

I lent whatever expertise I could to the article... it quotes Bro
Russell and gives a shout out to Matt Bors.

There is also an additional piece talking about cartoons specifically here:
