NBM Announces SPX Plans

For Immediate Release:

NBM HEADS TO SPX 2013;

Premiering SCIENCE: A DISCOVERY IN COMICS

Margreet de Heer and Dara Naraghi & Brent Bowman (PERSIA BLUES) To Appear

On September 14-15th, you can find some of the most prestigious names in comics at the 2012 Small Press Expo (aka SPX).

Unlike many conventions that are geared toward pop culture or corporately owned comics, SPX was created in 1994 to promote artists and publishers who produce independent comics. SPX hosts an annual festival that provides a forum for artists, writers and publishers of comic art in its various forms to present to the public comic art not normally accessible through normal commercial channels.

It's one of NBM's favorite shows and this year we're proud to bring three of our talented authors with us and the debut of our newest title.

Margreet de Heer will bring her new book, Science: A Discovery in Comics and will be signing throughout the weekend.

Science: dull or hard to understand?

Not if you read this book!

The creators of Philosophy – a Discovery in Comics take on a new challenge, and explain the different scientific disciplines in clear, colorful chapters.

Who exclaimed "Eureka" and why?

Why did Galileo get into a fight with the Church?

What happens when you have your DNA tested?

All these questions and more are answered in a chronological journey from ancient times to modern Quantum Theory, with creators Margreet and Yiri as your witty guides.

A great comic book for anyone who wants to learn in a fun way the bigger framework of science, or brush up on what they learned in school.

Margreet will be appearing at the NBM booth throughout the weekend and will be signing both Science, as well as her previous book, Philosophy.

PERSIA BLUES

Also appearing are Dara Naraghi and Brent Bowman, creators of the recently released first volume of the trilogy, Persia Blues.

Minoo Shirazi is a rebellious young Iranian woman, struggling to define herself amidst the strict social conventions of an oppressive regime, and  the differing wishes of an overbearing father, in between life in Iran and  life in midwestern America. Minoo Shirazi is also a free-spirited adventurer  in a fantasy world, a place where aspects of modern America and ancient Persia meld into a unique landscape. And yet, neither of these women are the true Minoo Shirazi. At the intersection of guilt and freedom, family and self, ancient myths and modern enigmas, lies…Persia Blues.

Also attending the show are Brooke A. Allen (A Home For Mr. Easter) at Table L8 and Jesse Lonergan (Joe and Azat, Flower and Fade and an upcoming title that he'll have mini comic excerpts from) at Tables N9-10.

We'll also be offering all of our latest titles and prints from artists Rick Geary and Stan Mack are available for free for any $30 purchase, with a signed version free with a $50 purchase.

Throughout SPX, NBM can be found at tables G1-2.

Beyond Comics - Villains Month Announcement!

DC Comics Villains Month Announcement!

Allocations Will Occur

on many titles!

Dear Valued Customers,

This week marks the beginning of DC Comics' Villains Month Event. Promising a lot of fun for readers, all of DC's titles are being taken over by the villains. As part of the event, all titles will ship with 3D lenticular covers, at a cost of one extra dollar.

However, as many of you are aware through industry news sites, DC had problems with print numbers, and many of the titles are being allocated, with shops' orders being partially filled for the special covers. Some of these allocations are rather extreme, under 30% fulfillment on some titles, while others will be completely filled. To help make up for this, DC is shipping second print regular cover versions of all the Villains Month titles, the same days as the 3D covers, at regular cover price.

Due to the large number of in-store subscribers, we simply cannot guarantee that any given customer will be able to get any given 3D cover. There is just no easy way to track purchasing as it goes, over the course of a month, in order to do something along the lines of first come, first served. As a result, all subscriptions will be filled randomly. On any given title, a subscriber may get the 3D cover or the 2D cover. There is no way to tell in advance, and there will be no preferential treatment where this is concerned.

We apologize in advance for this, wishing there were a way to make all customers happy at once, but it is completely out of our hands. We hope that despite the issue with the covers, you still enjoy Villains Month, as well as its follow-up, Forever Evil.

Thanks for your understanding.

Neal Adams is a towering figure in the world of comic book creation and art. Neal has had legendary 'runs' on Batman, X-Men, Green Lantern-Green Arrow and Deadman. Adams rescued Batman from the campy nostalgia of the television show, and re-fitted him in his present incarnation as an "Avenger of the Night." His run on Batman led directly to the new, more realistic incarnation in "Batman Returns" movie, which featured the character he created, Ras Al Ghul.

Beyond Comics is proud to be hosting an in store appearance by Neal Adams, one of the comic book industries most important and influential artists the day before Baltimore's incredible Comic Book Convention, The Baltimore Comic Con. Mr. Adams will be inaugurating the Baltimore Comic Con by coming to our store and autographing copies of his newest work, Batman Black & White #1, as well as other prints and books. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet one of the most influential comic artists ever.

The Post on Library of Congress consolidation

Here at ComicsDC, we had noted this earlier in the summer, specifically as it's planned to move the serials reading room, which includes comic books, across the street from the collection. This would lead to transportation issues - how do you move Action #1 - and security ones - does someone stand over a reader watching him?

At Library of Congress, changes are afoot in technology as well as in physical space

Joe Sutliff's new webcomic Master Jeffrey

From Joe Sutliff -

Announcing the adventures of Master Jeffrey, my new web comic. Based on my real-life brother-in-law who passed away earlier this year, the main character is cranky and wants to be left alone, but is sometimes forced to save the world with his genius. Instead of focusing on the details of his life, I wanted to create something that captured Jeffrey's spirit. Read more at the website MasterJeffrey.com, or come visit me at Booth A239 at the Baltimore Comic-Con and I'll talk your ear off.
