"Down to Earth: Herblock and Photographers Observe the Environment" Opens Sept. 22

Library of Congress
101 Independence Ave. SE
Washington DC   20540

August 20, 2012

"Down to Earth: Herblock and Photographers Observe the Environment"
Opens at Library of Congress on Sept. 22

Throughout his 72-year career, Herblock, the award-winning cartoonist at the Washington Post, revealed a concern and passion for the environment.  His cartoons, along with photographs on environmental issues by 12 American photographers, will be showcased in a new exhibition at the Library of Congress.

"Down to Earth: Herblock and Photographers Observe the Environment" opens on Saturday, Sept. 22 in the Graphic Arts Galleries on the ground level of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C.  Free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, the exhibition closes on Saturday, March 23, 2013.

The exhibition will offer new perspectives with which to observe the planet.  The cartoons and photographs on display are compelling compositions, because their creators intended to provoke reaction and inspire change.

The inspiration for "Down to Earth" comes from Herbert L. Block (1909-2001), commonly called Herblock, and his long-standing support for protecting the environment.  A four-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Herblock was the chief editorial cartoonist at the Washington Post, where he worked for more than 55 years.

The exhibition features 15 Herblock cartoons and 17 photographs.  Although the visual techniques used in photography and cartooning differ, both types of media can address such themes as the spread of toxins, water pollution, the negative effects of oil drilling, global warming, deforestation, exploitation of wetlands and overconsumption.

Sam Kittner's photographs vividly document the outrage of demonstrators in Louisiana over toxic-waste dumping.  Other images are more subtle, such as Olaf Otto Becker's beautiful image of a blue river in Greenland that shows the effects of global warming and acid rain.

Herblock's cartoons rely on humor, irony and sarcasm.  One of the drawings on display, from 2001, shows two businessmen smoking cigars and looking at oil derricks on the Alaskan landscape.  It is titled "We Could Compromise and Paint Them Green."  Another drawing, created in 1998, shows a beleaguered man, seen through the heat waves of a blazing sun.  He is carrying a coat on one arm and is holding up a newspaper with the headline "Environmental Groups Warn of Global Warming."  It is titled "All Right, All Right – I Believe It."

An online version of "Down to Earth" will be available on Saturday, Sept. 22, at http://myloc.gov/Exhibitions/herblock-down-to-earth/.

"Down to Earth" is located in one of the three exhibition spaces of the Graphic Arts Galleries.  The other spaces are the Swann Gallery and the Herblock Gallery.  Currently in the Herblock Gallery is "Herblock Looks at 1962: Fifty Years Ago Today in Editorial Cartoons," which will rotate in 10 new cartoons from 1962 on Saturday, Sept. 22.

Three gallery talks about "Down to Earth" are scheduled in October.  At noon on Wednesday, Oct. 3, and at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 17, curators Sara Duke and Carol Johnson will talk about the works featured in the exhibition.  At noon on Thursday, Oct. 11, photographer Robert Coppola will talk about his work.

Most of the photographs displayed in "Down to Earth" are part of the Kent and Marcia Minichiello Collection at the Library of Congress, which contains 350 contemporary works by more than 20 American photographers.  The collection presents ongoing environmental issues through the lens of some of the most renowned American photographers working today, such as Terry Evans, Frank Golhke, Sam Kittner, John Pfahl and Victor Landweber.  Kent and Marcia Minichiello, Washingtonians committed to the environment, collected 27 in-depth photographic projects by these photographers and others.  The Minichiellos donated the collection to the Library in 2001.

The Herb Block Foundation donated a collection of more than 14,000 original cartoon drawings and 50,000 rough sketches, as well as manuscripts, to the Library of Congress in 2002, and has generously continued to provide funds to support ongoing programming.

The Library has been collecting original cartoon art for more than 140 years.  It is a major center for cartoon research with holdings of more than 100,000 original cartoon drawings and prints. These works, housed in the Prints and Photographs Division, span five centuries and range from 17th-century Dutch political prints to 21st-century contemporary comic strips.

The Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division includes approximately 14.4 million photographs, drawings and prints from the 15th century to the present day.  International in scope, these visual collections represent a uniquely rich array of human experience, knowledge, creativity and achievement, touching on almost every realm of endeavor: science, art, invention, government and political struggle, and the recording of history.  For more information, visit www.loc.gov/rr/print/.

David Astor's "Comic (and Column) Confessional" book published

My friend David Astor just sent me this note about his new book which I'm looking forward to. David was THE go-to-guy for covering comic strip syndicates for over two decades. He's forgotten more about comic strips than I'll ever know (as the cliche goes):

The memoir I wrote about my twenty-five years at Editor & Publisher magazine has been published (Xenos Press, Chicago).

The part-humorous Comic (and Column) Confessional -- which has endorsements from Gary Larson ("The Far Side"), Lynn Johnston ("For Better or For Worse"), Mort Walker ("Beetle Bailey"), and others on its back cover -- includes anecdotes about cartoonists, material about changes in the syndication and media worlds, personal stuff, and much more (including many references to Washington Post and Washington Post Writers Group people).

Interested readers  could order a signed copy of the book directly from me (by emailing me at dastor@earthlink.net) or order via Amazon:

The just-posted listing has several temporary errors, including the wrong publication year(it's 2012 not 2008) and the wrong publisher (Xenos not Lulu; the book is not self-published). But the book can still be ordered via Amazon despite the errors.

Since leaving E&P, I've worked as a Huffington Post blogger; my pieces about books (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dave-astor) have drawn more than 2,000 "fans" and many hundreds of comments since 2011. I also write an award-winning weekly humor column for The Montclair (N.J.) Times and serve on the board of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.

Photos are a 1992 shot I took of Herblock at a National Cartoonists Society Reuben weekend in D.C., a 1986 shot I took of Lynn Johnston holding the Reuben Award she received in Washington's National Press Club for "For Better or For Worse," and a 1988 shot I took of Berkeley Breathed ("Bloom County"/Washington Post Writers Group) at the AAEC convention in Milwaukee.

TODAY! DC Comics history graphic novel anthology signing

One More Page Books in Arlington, Va., will hold the official launch signing of District Comics: An Unconventional History on Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Aug. 19, from 3-5 pm. About 20 contributors (writers and artists) will be there. Artist Kevin Rechin and I did a story on the Civil War's Army Medical Museum, and we'll be there.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man 1 SC

by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli

The saga of the new Spider-Man is finally here! Young Miles Morales is bitten by another spider from Norman Osborne's labs, developing similiar but different powers. As he slowly figures out what happened to him, we see his first encounter with Peter Parker, his first supervillain fight, and his attempts to get into a good school and figure out why his parents want him to stay away from his uncle! Plus, he soon draws the attention of Nick Fury and the Ultimates. A great, emotional story with amazing art by Pichelli! Highest recommendation!

Red Diary/Re(A)d Diary HC

by Steven Seagle and Teddy Kristiansen

The team behind It's a Bird reunite for a challenging new project. Kristiansen first did a story on his own, about World War I and an art forgery mystery. Then Seagle took the art and wrote a new script without knowing the original story, so flip the book over and you get a completely new tale, about a man who escapes World War I by stealing the identity of an artist!

Before Watchmen: Rorschach #1 (of 4)

by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo

The Before Watchmen story everyone's been waiting for: the early cases of the psychotic vigilante, Rorschach! On the search for the source of drugs, he heads into the sewers under New York on the trail of supervillain.

The Art of War SC

by Kelly Roman and Michael DeWeese

A scifi thriller of corporate finance merged with military tactics! Kelly Roman was in the Special Forces and is recruited by the megacorporation that his brother worked for before his suicide. There Roman is taken under the wing of its eccentric CEO, Sun Tzu. A mashup of The Art of War with nanotech, spy thriller, and violent action!

Fangbone! 3: The Birthday Party of Dread SC

by Michael Rex

The newest Fangbone adventure sees him and his best friend Bill going to a 4 year old's birthday party, where a real evil magician attacks with a magic potion that makes anything come to life! Bill gets cursed as the target of a monster attack instead of Fangbone, and Fangbone imparts more wisdom from the land of Skullbania!

Hulk: Season One HC

by Fred Van Lente and Tom Fowler

Another look at the early days of Marvel's most popular characters, updated! This is definitely one of the best so far, as Bruce Banner tries to figure out what sort of monster he has turned into, even as it appears that the gamma bomb test has failed and his career is in jeopardy. Add in a flirty officer by the name of Betty Ross, another scientist who is an old flame, and a scientific terrorist organization, and this is a fast-paced drama with some great action!

The Victories #1 (of 5)

by Michael Avon Oeming

A dark new superhero world, where a mysterious new drug called Float is on the streets, and the superteam of The Victories is trying to stop it. The main character, Faustus, is a hero who is questioning his ability to life up to the Victories' standard when he is too late to stop the murder of a corrupt judge by a supervillain who thinks he can push the hero over the edge.

Classic Popeye #1

by Bud Sagendorf

Outside of the famous comic strip by Segar, Sagendorf also did a comic book series that matched Segar for the great cartoony style and hilarious hijinks! This is a reprint of the first issue, with some extra new stories in it! Jump on board now!

Actor/Comedian Phil LaMarr to Host the 2012 Harvey Awards

Phil LaMarr
Phil LaMarr
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - August 16, 2012 -
The Baltimore Comic-Con is happy to announce that actor and comedian Phil LaMarr will host this year's Harvey Awards banquet and ceremony, taking place on the evening of Saturday, September 8, 2012. The Baltimore Comic-Con, which will be taking place September 8-9 at the Baltimore Convention Center, has been the home of the Harvey Awards since 2006.

John Stewart Green Lantern (LaMarr) Phil LaMarr is best known as a cast member of Fox's MADtv, a sketch comedy show based on characters and situations from MAD magazine, which was found in 1952 by Editor Harvey Kurtzman (namesake of the Harvey Awards) and Publisher William Gaines. The show first aired in 1995 and ran for 14 seasons, of which LaMarr was a cast member for 5 seasons (1995-2000).

In addition to his comedic acting, LaMarr is also an accomplished voice actor for such renowned shows as Futurama, Kaijudo, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Static Shock, Evil con Carne, Samurai Jack and Justice League Unlimited, as well as recurring roles on King of the Hill, Family Guy, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Young Justice and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron.

Harvey Award Recipient LogoAs a lifeling comics reader, LaMarr says: "I'm excited and honored to be a part of the Harvey Awards this year, and I am looking forward to meeting many of the people I spend every Wednesday afternoon with."

The change in host this year from Harvey Award mainstay Scott Kurtz was due to a family conflict. Kurtz, a friend of both the Baltimore Comic-Con and the Harvey Awards, will return in the future.  "Scott worked really hard to make the show this year, and we all understand and respect that family commitments must take priority," said Marc Nathan, Baltimore Comic-Con promoter.  "Scott is always welcome here in Baltimore!"

Steve Conley launches Kickstarter campaign

Local Cartoonist Steve Conley Kickstarts his BLOOP Webcomic Graphic Novel

Eisner and Harvey Award nominee, and Eagle Award winner Steve Conley is launching a Kickstarter campaign to help produce the first print collection of his webcomic graphic novel BLOOP.

BLOOP is the story of a little green space monkey who is looking to find the perfect tree. Along the way, he makes some friends and finds that not only his tree, but the entire planet, is threatened by a corporation bent on tearing the world apart.

This BLOOP collection will showcase the first chapter of the story and will be a giant 10 inches x 15 inches. The book will have a case-bound, hardback cover with a golden foil stamp and a full-color, wraparound dust jacket. The interior will be 28-pages of full-color printing on thicker, 100# satin text paper.

"I've been doing the webcomic thing for a long while and I think crowd funding is the tool independent creators have been missing," Steve said, "Readers get to read comics like BLOOP for free online and - if they really dig the story or art or if they just want to support the project - they can get a personalized, deluxe edition that gives them an experience they can't get from their PC or iPad."

For readers new to crowd funding and Kickstarter, the concept is simple and a lot of fun. Readers pledge a certain dollar amount on the project's Kickstarter page and different pledge amounts earn contributors different rewards. Contributors help make the project happen and get cool stuff in return.

The Kickstarter campaign features a variety of rewards including a set of reto-futuristic poster prints and postcards created by Steve as set decoration in the story.  The main reward, of course, is the book itself which. The top rewards are the original pages of comics art used for creating the story and the book's wraparound cover. This is the first time the original art will be available to buy and I've held on to them specifically for this campaign."

Steve has lived in Northern Virginia for the past 20 years and has been closely involved with the local cartooning and comics community. Steve was a volunteer with SPX, the Small Press Expo, for over a decade serving as Executive Director in 2004 and 2005. Steve has also been a contributor to the Baltimore Comic-Con since its inception. In 2007, Steve wrote and drew the DC-based political comic strip "Socks and Barney" through Election day 2008. Most recently, Steve contributed to the Team Cul de Sac project, celebrating Richard Thompson's brilliant comic strip Cul de Sac, and he contributed a page to the latest issue of Washington D.C.'s independent comics newspaper Magic Bullet.
It was a long road to BLOOP. "I started working on BLOOP ten years ago and each time I sat down to work on it, I felt like my drawing skills just weren't up to the task. Every time I drew that little space monkey, something wasn't quite right. After nearly a decade of sketching and practicing, one day, he just snapped into place. I feel like I finally have all the ingredients I need to do it right."

The Kickstarter launches August 14 at 2pm ET and will run until September 17.
