KAL Cartooning at The Baltimore Sun

From: kevin Kallaugher

Recently The Baltimore Sun celebrated its 175th anniversary. The newspaper asked me to create a cartoon reflecting on that achievement. I choose to create something that celebrated the proud tradition of editorial cartooning at The Sun over the decades. Despite the odds, I am hoping the tradition carries on for another 100 years. You can see the cartoon here:

Remember Tom the Dancing Bug from the Wash Post?

If you fondly remember Reuben Bolling's strip Tom the Dancing Bug from the Wash Post's Weekend section (back when it was part of the reason to read that section) you can directly subscribe to suport the strip. Putting my money where my mouth is, I did so over the weekend.

One slim week left for Team Cul de Sac art auction

You can buy original art from great cartoonists and illustrators and raise funds for Team Cul de Sac's Parkinsons disease campaign at http://comics.ha.com/common/auction/catalog.php?SaleNo=510

As enthusiastically recommended by editorial cartoonist Steve Artley

Batman: Death by Design HC

by Chip Kidd and Dave Taylor

A new stand-alone graphic novel of Batman that may become a new classic! Uber-designer Chip Kidd tells the story of Bruce Wayne trying to demolish his father's old Gotham train station, while the Joker has plans to intervene, and a new vigilante is getting involved. Great action and a cool plot combine with amazing art-deco artwork by Dave Taylor to make this a must-have for Batman fans!

Everything We Miss HC

by Luke Pearson

A new tale by Luke Pearson who brought us the amazing Hildafolk! A strange but compelling look at the minor things that go unnoticed in life, from a disintegrating relationship to the secret influences on our actions and the hidden aliens who document humanity! Fantastic, with his usual great art and Nobrow production value, one of the best of 2012!

Wonder Woman 1: Blood HC

by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang

One of the best of DC's new 52 finally is out in a deluxe hardcover! The Greek mythology of Wonder Woman comes back to the fore as a new child of Zeus is found on Earth and Diana steps in to protect her in this horror-tinged new story! Plus revelations about WW's origin, lots of monsters, gods, and Amazons, and the amazing art of Cliff Chiang!

Avatar the Last Airbender: The Promise 2 SC

by Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru

At last part 2 of The Promise trilogy is out! This sequel to the show picks up right where it left off, with Aang and Katara trying to prevent a new war as the Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Nation area lead to trouble! Gene Yang really gets the flavor and imporatance of Avatar (unlike certain movie directors!) so check it out!

Cow Boy: A Boy and His Horse HC

by Nate Cosby, Chris Eliopoulos

An amazing hard-edged Western about a lone bounty hunter tracking down a family of criminals... except the bounty hunter is only 10, and the criminals are HIS family! Hilarious dialogue and situations match up to a compelling story that turns poignant. Plus short interludes by other great artists! Another classic of 2012!

All ages!

The Moon Moth SC

by Jack Vance and Humayoun Ibrahim

Newcomer Ibrahim brings a cool art style to his adaptation of a classic Jack Vance scifi short story! On an alien world, everyone wears masks that show their personality and communicate by singing and playing different instruments. When a murderer arrives at the planet, a human agent must try to find him while navigating the super complicated social system before he is killed himself!

Monsieur Jean: The Singles Theory HC

by Philippe Dupuy and Charles Berberian

A new amazing slice-of-life drama about 30something writer Jean and his problems when his depressed friend moves in with him after a bad breakup. The Jean stories have been huge hits overseas for their great character moments and dialogue, and this one is no exception. A disastrous party in the country, stuck in an elevator, and the theory of singlehood!

Kick-Ass 2 HC

by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.

The sequel to the first hit Kick-Ass series is out in hardcover finally, as Kick-Ass and Hit Girl encounter the first superhero team, and Red Mist forms his own team of supervillains! Can Mindy hack it as a regular girl in school even as she tries to train Kick-Ass to learn to fight for real?

Fantom Comics: Controversial ‘Before Watchmen’ to be Released in June

connect with us: facebook twitter
Controversial 'Before Watchmen' to be Released in June
Will the prequels be Star Wars prequels bad or original Watchmen awesome?

June 6th marks the debut issue of Before Watchman – arguably the most controversial comic book to be released since the Death of Superman 20 years ago.

Next week, Time Warner and DC Comics will release the first  issue of Before Watchmen, the prequel to the original.

Alan Moore – the reclusive British writer of Watchmen famous for his worship of a snake god – insisted that this comic not be made. The fact that the genius behind the series is missing from the project has certainly raised eyebrows among fans and industry insiders alike. Some stores are refusing to even stock the books.
Despite the star power of the artists and writers involved (Brian Azzarello, Darwyn Cooke, Amanda Conner, J. Michael Straczynski, Andy & Joe Kubert and Jae Lee among others), and the full backing of Time Warner/DC Comics, the release of the series is already raising hackles for many fans.

Matthew Klokel, owner of Fantom Comics in Union Station, certainly believes so. "There's been lots of controversy in this store. On the one hand, people hate that Moore isn't involved, and they still have a bad taste in their mouth from the awful Star Wars prequels." But it's not all black and white, stresses Klokel. "For one thing, the original artist, Dave Gibbons, fully endorses the project." Will Fantom Comics be stocking the comic? "You betcha," says Klokel. "We've ordered a ton. Personally, I can't wait to read them."

The original Watchman was published in 1986. To this day, many consider this 12-issue series to be the greatest superhero comic of all time.  Since its release, fans have been left with nowhere to go. Next week marks the first glimpse of the Watchman series in over a quarter century.

You can find the first issue of the first mini-series, Before Watchmen: Minutemen, at Fantom Comics, located on the East Mezzanine Level of Union Station, or online from Fantom's Digital Store on Wednesday, June 6th.

June 7: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women and More!

Literature, Music and Dance eNews

The Ann Loeb Bronfman Gallery Presents:Graphic Details with title
Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women
June 7 - September 2, 2012
Opening Reception
Thursday, June 7
6:00 - 8:00 pm
Remarks at 7:00 pm by:
Michael Kaminer & Sara Lightman, co-curators
Zachary Levine, Yeshiva University Museum Curator
Spotlighting the raw, revealing voices of Jewish women and their singular presence in graphic storytelling, the exhibition illuminates the intersection of experiences that make these diaristic comics so compelling. Funny, outrageous, poignant and embarrassingly intimate all at once, the works in "Graphic Details" reflect the artists' individual journeys, refracted through a distinctively Jewish lens in a pop-culture art form. Some bare their bodies. Some expose their psyches. All are fearless about sex, romance, politics, body functions, experiences, emotions and desires.

June 1: John Fantucchio art exhibit opening

From: Mary Fantucchio:

"John G. Fantucchio will have three paintings on display in Alexandria at the Del Ray Artisans Gallery. We'd like to invite you to the opening reception - food and drinks will be served. Come and meet John on Friday, June 1, 7 - 10. The title of the show is 'Art On the Edge.' It's an all experimental art exhibit. His stuff may look like something you'd find hanging in the lounge on the Starship Enterprise - but sorry, no comic book artwork. The address is 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA, 22301-1124. Their phone number is 703-838-4827."

For those joining us late, John is a comics fanzine artist of the 1960s who turned to fine art and teaching.
