You know what else is strange? Major papers that spent years chronicling the existential threat posed by Donald Trump, deciding not to endorse a political candidate. The decisions may be principled stands, as their owners assert, but it’s understandable that readers suspect the papers’ owners would rather not find themselves accidentally falling off balconies a few months from now. That’s a very real prospect, given that the corrupt Republican Supreme Court has given a certain Hitler-aficionado the green light to make good on his threats.

Free to read link for the comments - the first 630 are overwhelmingly negative. Lots of cancelled subscriptions, and blaming Bezos for the decision. Which is correct. Although I will also blame the publisher Will Lewis, a former Murdoch employee. Who wrote, strongly implying that Richard Nixon was worse than Donald Trump, a view which seems ... blinkered at best... and I don't think even Herblock would agree with that viewpoint.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way to preserve the comments on Ann's cartoon if the Post decides to wipe them ex post facto. Dropping them into Word strips all the context, while still giving one 26 pages of random quotes.

Up to 715 comments in the time I took to write this...

The Post's own columnists have disowned this decision.

The NY Times, which has its own problems with mealy-mouthedness covered the non-endorsement story.

Here's the comment I posted on her cartoon, which won't matter worth a damn, but...

Ann Telnaes is a friend of mine. You, Jeff Bezos and Will Lewis, are not Ann Telnaes, and you should be ashamed of your lack of moral standing. Lewis at least isn't an American, and can't vote in this election and can run home to post-Brexit UK's own failures, but you, Bezos? This country made you one of the richest men in the world, and you're helping sell it down the river, an apt analogy for someone who's moved to DC to make even more money. So, I'm out doing my laps earlier this week, and I spot this lawn sign 
in front of a house about 2 blocks around the corner from us — and all 
I can think is that somebody in the DNC's ad agencies isn't quite 
clear on the concept of "joy". Not just as an intelligent human, but 
as a designer and art director with 30+ years in the biz, I gotta say 
that this choice of color and typography does NOT bespeak "joy".

The sign glowers at me, dark and mean, telling me to "choose joy" as 
if issuing an order, as if implying "...or ELSE" — coming off like the 
latest in a long line of fascistic, authoritarian slogans: War Is 
Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, Ignorance Is Strength; Arbeit Macht Frei; 
Country Over Party. Choose Joy, or else.
