 https://blogs.loc.gov/headlinesandheroes/2023/08/finding-comic-books-and-newspapers-at-the-2023-national-book-festival/

This year's National Book Festival will take place on August 12, 2023, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Every year we are treated to the opportunity of seeing some our favorite authors and creators at the National Book Festival. The Festival also includes tables and pavilions with fun activities and giveaways. This year you will be able to learn more about the Library's collections of comic books and newspapers at the Library of Congress Pavilion, and hear from some incredible authors and artists at the six other stages. Don't miss your chance to see these presentations at the National Book Festival!

The first installment of a new middle grade series, Sara Shepard’s “Penny Draws a Best Friend External” follows young Penny Lowry as she navigates changing friendships, a family secret and her feelings of anxiety. Moderated by Carolyn Belefski.

Finding LGBTQIA+ Hidden History 11:45am-12:15pm

"Historic newspapers are a rich yet often overlooked resource when it comes to studying LGBTQIA+ history. This presentation provides recommended search tips and strategies, focusing primarily on the kinds of unique resources that can be found in our Chronicling America historic newspaper collection."

In addition to these presentations, you can find a table with more information about Chronicling America* and other historic newspaper collections staffed by librarians from the Newspaper & Current Periodical Reading Room. Our staff will be happy to help demonstrate search and browse features, and answer your questions.

And don't miss your chance for some hands-on creation of your own at our Zine table!

Hobbes Holluck just launched Fuzzbuquet 5, a new Comic Books project

Fuzzbuquet 5: Breakfast at Nibbienew's

A whimsical dark fantasy meant for all ages. A story about a monster with a very small brain and a very large heart.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1995040525/fuzzbuquet-5-breakfast-at-nibbienews

Cover art for chapter 5 by Hobbes Holluck

Fuzzbuquet is an all ages fantasy story about a monster with a very large heart and a very small brain.  In the previous issues we met Fuzzbuquet, a lovable beast with big dreams of becoming a cheese-maker.  Unfortunately for Fuzzbuquet no one would buy his fuzzy cheese.  Desperate to fulfill his dreams, Fuzzbuquet decides to finance his business by setting out on a quest to slay a dragon.

Variant cover by Jeremy Vinar

In this fifth chapter, Fuzzbuquet is treated (mistreated?) to a Bed and Breakfast at Mrs. Nibbienew's.   Unbeknownst to Fuzzbuquet, Soggi Biscotti is hatching a mischievous plot with Mrs. Nibbienew's son in the wee hours of the morning.  And elsewhere, steeped in the stench of Bumblossom Bog, Parcy Plundergas comes face to face with his greatest foe- himself.

The Mush-Man cometh!

The story of Fuzzbuquet draws its inspiration from  a wide variety of sources to include '80s/'90s Saturday morning cartoons and Arthurian legends.  Additionally, it also draws inspiration from the classic films of Rankin/Bass like The Last Unicorn and The Hobbit.

Fuzzbuquet doesn't make deals with do-do heads.

Packed with slapstick gags and potty humor, Fuzzbuquet is reminiscent of the gross-out culture of the '80s and '90s like Garbage Pail Kids as well as the over-the-top heroics (and stupidity) of shows like He-Man and Thundercats.

And I said, "What about breakfast at Nibbienew's?"

The art of Fuzzbuquet is done using traditional materials such as pencil, ink, markers, paint and airbrush.  In creating Fuzzbuquet, I wanted to try and evoke some of the techniques I saw in cartoons and comics when I was growing up.

Parcy's past is... complicated.

Ultimately, it gives this comic series a distinct look and feel that sets it apart from many other current works.  This is the fifth issue of the ongoing Fuzzbuquet story.  With your help, I hope to continue publishing the adventures of Fuzzbuquet annually as Fuzzbuquet continues his ill fated quest.

That darn Michael Ramirez

Michael Ramirez's July 25 editorial cartoon. (Michael Ramirez/The Washington Post)

Who was the target demographic?

Heather J. Lynch, Port Jefferson, N.Y.

Washington Post August 5 2023: A15

Michael Ramirez managed to insult a surprisingly large and diverse portion of the human population in a single frame with his July 25 editorial cartoon. Was it just younger generations that were the target of this unfunny hit job, or was it an attack on women? Both?

The only redeeming feature of this cartoon is that it managed to efficiently package up enough implicit bias for an entire semester's worth of discussion. To that end, bravo, Mr. Ramirez.

Ramirez.
