PSA: Paul Conrad's Chain Reaction

From: Matt Wuerker

Hey Cartoon Pals, Patriots and Associates--

I'm writing on behalf of an old friend of many of us.  Paul Conrad did a bunch of things, drew a lot of great cartoons, won a bunch of Pulitzers, made Nixon's enemies list, encouraged some of us to do this crazy political cartoon thing... and he also did some great sculpture.  The biggest and most public of these sculptures is now in jeopardy.

Conrad's Chain Reaction is a big bold political sculpture on the grounds of Santa Monica City Hall.  It may be the biggest single and lasting piece of art created by an American political cartoonist… and it's in jeopardy.  Paul's son David and a bunch of art lovers and political activists are mounting an effort to save it.  They need to raise a bunch of money to do this.

If you could donate money directly to the effort (it's tax deductible) that's the simplest way to support their efforts.  If you can do more, donate some art to their upcoming auction  and help recruit others to donate, write about it on your blogs or newsletters all that would help even more.

David's email address is here
David Conrad---   davepconrad@earthlink.net

The background on Chain Reaction and the effort to save it is spelled out here
http://conradprojects.com/

If you know other fans of Conrad, or other lovers of political art who might be supportive be sure to forward this on to them.

best---
M

Matt Davies at Politics and Prose pictures

101_5978

Editorial cartoonist Matt Davies was at Politics and Prose, July 27, 2013 for his new children's book Ben Rides On. Here's some more pictures of him in action.

The book is short, but enjoyable. Davies did a nice chalk talk with children from the audience 'helping' him draw. He kindly let me keep his crow drawing. The Library of Congress (in the person of Sara Duke) got the caricature of his teacher.

Aug 17: Darick Robertson in Annapolis

As reported on Convention Scene:

Artist Darick Robertson signs at Third Eye Comics on Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 11:00am until 1:00pm!

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

Third Eye Faithful, we are totally excited to announce one of our biggest signings of the Summer with the arrival of Darick Robertson to Third Eye Comics this August! Darick is the legendary modern comics artist behind instant classics like TRANSMETROPOLITAN, THE BOYS, and HAPPY! He's done a ton of other excellent work as well, in fact, we'd be here all day if we ran through the list. Let me just say this: we're honored to have the man as a guest at our store this Summer in anticipation of his brand new creator-owned series, BALLISTIC, from BLACK MASK STUDIOS, the publishers of the recent 12 REASONS TO DIE comic.

What's Darick's new project, BALLISTIC, all about? Imagine the cult movie genius of REPO MAN (the '80s one!) distilled into a modern day heist story. A madcap sci-fi buddy adventure about a wanna-be bank robber and his best friend Gun, a drug-addicted, foul-mouthed, living gun, marks Darick Robertson's return to the hard sci-fi worldbuilding of his classic TRANSMETROPOLITAN mixed with THE BOYS' ultra-violence.

Darick will be signing at Third Eye Annapolis from 11AM-1PM on Saturday 8/17. We'll have plenty of copies of all his works available, including his new series, BALLISTIC!
